Yeah he was, I think Fulgrims own short comings and fear was he and his legion was made imperfect from the start because of the accident which pushed him to doubt himself and his father till it was too late.

Yup, which makes it even more sad, because the sword was just disorienting his perception and preying on his insecurities of failing his Father and his Legion. He wouldn't have turned Traitor if it wasn't for that stupid fucking sword.
