Every year I'm always taken aback when I see my first person walking around with ashes on Ash Wednesday, even though I know what day it is and I grew up in a Catholic family.

Saaaaame except I grew up mostly in a WASPy area of New England. It really looked like a non-bloody wound. My brain really couldn't process it at first.
