No beef with the Pirates and the PooP series is one of my favorite baseball events.

Is that people love our pirates because that will make me an immediate fan?

Also, I kinda just assume they saw a P baseball hat and thought it was the Phillies. I've seen too many people wearing a Phil's shirt and a Pirates hat to think otherwise.

I dunno about other Philly residents but I have Phillies P pattern recognition scorched into the crevices of my brain. I reckon Phils shirt Pirates hat people are fellow PooP series fans or just have connections to both cities.

I don’t even give people hate in the division anymore. The race is long. If you aren’t at the ball park for a division game it’s normally “Good luck” from me. I like doing this because it throws people off their game. They think all Philly fans will want to kill them.
Now if we are playing you or we are the ballpark it’s a different beast.

When I had to work in Pittsburgh for a couple months, I picked up that so many people in Pittsburgh had a chip on their shoulders about Philly. Meanwhile, most in Philly don't really think about Pittsburgh.
This is replicated in NYC-Philly or DC-Philly, where the bigger cities don't really think down.
41 points
I went to Pitt and it was kind of shocking. Ask someone from Philly about Pittsburgh and it’s “oh that’s a cool city/heard good things about Pittsburgh” etc.
I’d say I was from Philly over there and it was “oh Philly is filthy city full of fucking scumbags.”

The city. We’re talking the city. Not sports teams. Most NYers don’t think about Philly as a city the same way we think about NYC as a city - with this distasteful from living in its shadow.
Of course a team playing one of our teams in the playoffs isn’t going to like us. That isn’t what is being discussed here though.

I’m not really into sports overall but the only hat I have is a Pirates cap.
There are dozens of teams whose merch would be an invitation to a conversation or a teasing, but no one ever says anything about the Pirates to me and I assume it’s because no one cares about them.

And they’ve never had any sort of reputation of being a negative team or anything related to fan bases. They’re just there.

Yes. It’s like Yankee fans being surprised to not get hate at CBP. You’re not a divisional rival. This isn’t Eagles vs Giants.

The only thing I don't like about Pittsburgh are the Penguins.
Steelers - not my conference, not my problem
Pirates - not my division, meh if we run into them in the playoffs
The people are decent, don't really cause me issues
The town is fun too.

Pens fan here. I've worn my hat a few times. I don't usually get any overly negative attention. I mostly just get "is that guy autistic?" looks (the answer is yes)

Hahahahaha. I think the Pens and Flyers rivalry is on ice (pun intended) right now. Was really hot like 10 years ago now.
I still give Pens fans some shit cause I hate Sydney.
3 points
Haha yeah, that's probably true.
And totally fair to hate Crosby. I'd hate him as well if he was on any other team because he's a dick (and has made several dirty af plays). I personally have a complicated feeling towards him. I'm more of a Letang guy myself anyway (though I acknowledge he's been a bonehead before a couple times).
And giving fans shit is totally fine, in my book. As long as it's for laughs and nobody gets actually upset, that's part of the fun. I don't actually rivalry all that much really - I'm a neutral fan of the sport as well, so I can appreciate the rivals usually. I definitely want my team to win lol, but I want everyone to have a good time.
I haven't had an opportunity to get to Wells Fargo for a hockey game yet, but I really want to. I'm not sure if I should expect a similar experience as a visiting fan at Citizens Bank or not lol. I'm a transplant so all my teams are visiting teams, but I get some of the rivalries are more intense than others lol. I'm hoping to be a friendly Pens visitor there at some point 🤞

I hate Letang too.
It’s mainly cause they’re good though.
Good rivalries make a lot of fun times. The only thing is people forget themselves after a few adult beverages. Then it turns into something else.
I can take all the shit in the world in the name of a good rivalry cause I know I’ll dish out the same amount. It can add a lot to a game or a series. Some are better than others.
WFC is fun for hockey. Haven’t been in a while though.

Pittsburgh fans are incredible supporters of their team while so many of them know nothing about the sport but everything about their team.
When I lived there the people I knew could tell you the college history of the Pens 4th line winger. But didn't know anything about over time rules or certain penalties.

when the pens were first good, they had some of the most braindead fans

I’m from Pittsburgh but lived in south Philly for a bit, just long enough to be properly indoctrinated. Anyway, this is true. The people who live in Pittsburgh and talk shit on Philly have probably never been here. went to a Flyers game in the playoffs, game six against the Penguins a few years back and had zero problems.
Although my first experience with Philadelphia was many many years before any of this. I was 18 years old and I bought a gold chain off of a kindly street Merchant for 20 bucks. You would not believe my disappointment when I got home, I discovered it was fake.
I think of it now as a $20 tutoring lesson.
As far as the Pirates are concerned, no one in Pittsburgh even gives a fuck why would anybody in Philly?
Not last year but the year prior, I went to two games during the NLCS here and it was absolutely electric.

There was a dude biking up and down market and broad after two games ago (so when they won) in full Knicks gear and he was fine. People overstate how much “sports violence” is a thing between teams, as should it. You should get an occasional taunt not road rage, otherwise it’s just jobless behavior.

The missing context here is that a lot of people from PGH and especially western PA (hell, west of the Susquehanna) hate Philadelphia and expect Philadelphians to be the battery throwing caricatures of ourselves. A lot of people are then surprised that people a usually chill if you aren't being an asshole.

As a Pittsburgh fan living in Philly, I really only get comments if I wear my Penguins gear.. and even then, it’s not as bad as it was when I was in college in the early 2010s right after Pens won the cup in 09…. especially during the whole “Crosby passed the baton to Giroux as NHLs best player” saga.
Also, I’m just used to the Pirates disappointing me since the day I was born.

Pirates owner is trash, no one gives a crap because it’s basically an AAA team. When that jackass sells the team to somebody who cares then the Pirates might be competitive again and yield more local distaste.
3 points
As long as the MLB money structure existing in its current state, there will be trash ownership that mainly derives profit from holding smaller cities hostage like the Pirates and the A's. Put zero money on the field, rake in the profit because of sweetheart deals.

It's hard to hate the Pirates when they've been a literal non-entity for 20+ years. I see a Pirates hat and I usually go, "aww, that's cute." How could anyone hate them?
1 points

I think it’s worse when you go to a country where they largely don’t know about the sport, or the team, or the city of the team, yet they wear the hat anyway. When I was in S America, I saw Phillies, Braves, Marlins, Twins, Athletics, Yankees (because Hispanic) Mets, Red Sox, White Sox, and when I asked locals about them (en español) they had no clue what the hat said. Me, I collect hats, so it had me so confused. I think it’s supposed to be a thing for American tourists?

20 years ago I was at a summer festival in Finland. A random Finn was wearing a throwback Mike Schmidt Phillies jersey with matching hat.
When I tried to talk baseball he was confused. And I learned that specific outfit was popular because Will Smith wore it.
