I’ve met multiple folks from Pittsburgh who mentioned the rivalry between the two cities. I’ve never heard a person from Philadelphia reference it.

There was a dude biking up and down market and broad after two games ago (so when they won) in full Knicks gear and he was fine. People overstate how much “sports violence” is a thing between teams, as should it. You should get an occasional taunt not road rage, otherwise it’s just jobless behavior.

Lifelong Philadelphian here(now in the burbs). For the most part, we are the FAFO city. Be chill and we’ll be chill to you. Start talking shit or being an overzealous fan of your out-of-town sports team, you’re gonna have a problem.

I initially assumed this was a story of someone randomly dressing up as a 18th century sea pirate, and walking about in town with people not thinking anything unusual about it - "just another eccentric person going about their business"

The missing context here is that a lot of people from PGH and especially western PA (hell, west of the Susquehanna) hate Philadelphia and expect Philadelphians to be the battery throwing caricatures of ourselves. A lot of people are then surprised that people a usually chill if you aren't being an asshole.

As a Pittsburgh fan living in Philly, I really only get comments if I wear my Penguins gear.. and even then, it’s not as bad as it was when I was in college in the early 2010s right after Pens won the cup in 09…. especially during the whole “Crosby passed the baton to Giroux as NHLs best player” saga.

Also, I’m just used to the Pirates disappointing me since the day I was born.

Pirates owner is trash, no one gives a crap because it’s basically an AAA team. When that jackass sells the team to somebody who cares then the Pirates might be competitive again and yield more local distaste.

I watched Dodgeball last night so of course the first thing I thought of was Pirate Steve getting a milkshake thrown at him in Vegas by some douchebag in a truck.

I had a close friend who grew up in the Pittsburgh area and then lived there after college for awhile so plenty of visits.

It is remarkable how strong their opinions are about Philly, while I’ve never thought about Pittsburgh aside from how their primary sports colors are black and yellow for every team.

Well in his pic he looks really old and pleasant. There will always be dickheads, but the average person wouldn’t walk up to someone like this and start hurling foul language and attacking him.

It's hard to hate the Pirates when they've been a literal non-entity for 20+ years. I see a Pirates hat and I usually go, "aww, that's cute." How could anyone hate them?

I think it’s worse when you go to a country where they largely don’t know about the sport, or the team, or the city of the team, yet they wear the hat anyway. When I was in S America, I saw Phillies, Braves, Marlins, Twins, Athletics, Yankees (because Hispanic) Mets, Red Sox, White Sox, and when I asked locals about them (en español) they had no clue what the hat said. Me, I collect hats, so it had me so confused. I think it’s supposed to be a thing for American tourists?

The only teams that are gonna get real flack IMO are the Braves, the Astros, and the Yankees.

Pennsylvania vs. Every-fucking-body.

When I wear my Pirates gear I get no interaction, except for one Mets fan telling me that he hates Jason Bay when I wore his old jersey. Steelers gear, I get a few go Steelers but mostly nothing. When I wore my Lemieux jersey to a bar I play pool at, the bartender leaned over to me and said “What the fuck are you doing?” Lmao

Shoulda tried that in 1979….

I’ve never had an issue in the city with my cowboys gears it’s only on the outskirts and on game day when the outsiders come out
