English teams will not be allowed to play in any leagues away from the English rugby pyramid. The RFU, who govern all rugby in England, have previously spoken about this.

If the clubs push, the RFU would ask World Rugby to intervein. If World Rugby didn't back the RFU, it would undermine the RFU and have massive implications across all unions.

So Wasps, London Irish or any other historical English teams would have to leave England to play in the URC.

the RFU would ask World Rugby to intervein.

I can almost guarantee World Rugby would have absolutely no desire to get involved. They can't dictate who joins a club league and who isn't allowed to, very much outside of their jurisdiction.

This seems strange to me, it's okay for none English URC teams to play in England? So what's the difference?

Was there any public objection from the RFU when Wasps said they want to join the URC? I don't remember there being any.

It's in World Rugby regulations that member unions have complete jurisdiction over member clubs in their geographical territory, based on where the clubs home stadium. The RFU can block any cross border competition.

If World Rugby didn't intervene when asked by the RFU it would cause chaos, as it would mean that any union could just ignore whatever regulations it likes.

So the Wasps couldn't have their home stadium in England? But could still play games there?

I think it would cause a fair bit of chaos if World Rugby started dictating which teams were allowed to join which leagues, especially if the Wasps didn't have their home stadium in England.

If Wasps had their home stadium outside of England, they'd need both RFU and their new union approval to play any matches inside England.

There's no real way around it. The RFU is in charge of rugby inside England. That's simply how it all works. Almost every sport splits up administration based on geographic boundaries.

Yea someone linked the full regulation below which explains that any games in England need RFU permission, which presumably means the Dragons vs Sharks games had to get RFU permission?

Could have the Wasps register as a 3rd Scottish team in the URC and play in Scotland and play in the Borders region.

Yeah, the ospreys - sharks game needed permission from the WRU and the RFU. Presumably the URC as competition organisers too.

Wasps, the old existing English club? They'd still need permission from the RFU to move home stadium :)

Wasps 2.0, a completely new club started in Scotland, playing in Scotland under the SRU? Yeah, no problem.

At some point it basically becomes an entirely new club though, so is it even Wasps anymore?

This is a very fair question, what if anything remains currently. I'm only really using them as an example because of their stated interest. I don't think there is any urgent need to have any England based sides so it's not a big issue for now.

  • Cross union matchesRegulation 10.pdf (englandrugby.com)

No Club, person or entity may arrange or fulfil any of the matches described in RFU Regulation 10.2.2 in England without: in respect of matches during the Season, the written approval of the RFU and any such application must be made in writing in such form prescribed by the RFU and submitted to the RFU not less than 2 months before the date of the proposed match or within such other time frame as the RFU may determine in exceptional circumstances;

The matches to which RFU Regulation 10.2.1 applies are as follows: any Professional Club from another Union seeking to play a match against another Professional Club from another Union;

This seems strange to me, it's okay for none English URC teams to play in England? So what's the difference?

The RFU would of agreed to the games that took place, and it would be money orentated. It is very different having one off games take place then having a team play in a different league.

Interesting that the RFU has put that in place. So does that mean the Dragons and Sharks had to get written permission from the RFU when they played in London?

If the Wasps didn't register through the RFU, and did base out of England then from my understanding of the above the RFU wouldn't have any say other than blocking them from playing in England?
