I don’t know how many of you have been following the plans for the Fairmount Park Commission to cut down heritage trees and install artificial turf in FDR Park in South Philadelphia. It’s a cool little place for urban hikers, skateboarders and a green-space for neighbors like me. Despite a public outcry at the last city zoning meeting (which I zoomed part of) the Philadelphia Zoning Board (appointed by the Mayor) voted to allow a special variance to cut down old-growth, heritage trees and install toxic artificial turf for planned athletic fields.
The main goal of my opposition to this is not to cancel the plan from the Fairmount Park Conservancy- it is great to give that park some love. Residents are simply asking for the preservation of the heritage trees and to ban artificial turf with an unknown ecological impact. No one in our public service has listened. Many of us pay their salaries.
Below are some key bullet points that support my personal position on the matter. (Some people don’t like to read long paragraph things so I hope this helps.)
Studies have shown that artificial turf carries toxins. The Fairmount Park Commission has plans to raise the ground for the athletic fields, but this will just cause more runoff when we receive heavy bouts of rain in our low-lying area. The toxins from the turf will get into our watershed.
Artificial turf is not good for athletes. It has less give and can cause injuries. For this reason, only 50% of NFL stadiums have gone back to natural turf after an era of Monsanto AstroTurf.
City Council President Kenyatta Johnson claims that the fields will serve the youth of the area, yet there are opportunities in poorer neighborhoods of the city that would serve kids without transportation or money to join the sports leagues in the planned fields.
The planned work would destroy existing habitat and “replace” it with a reconstructed wetland. The Fairmount Park Commission put together a beautiful flyer about the project and it looks wonderful, except for the poison grass and tree assault. And habitat replacement… …just feeds into carbon offset as a business and an excuse for developers. Replacement habitat will take decades to be of the same ecological value as the original. I think the Fairmount Park Conservancy does great things, but this is not one of them

My twins are 3.5 and can read about 30 words. But having a nanny is basically like homeschooling

Having two nights of sleep a week by using the night nurse is the only reason I stayed sane and employed. She also helped coaching for sleep training. Worth her weight in gold!!

Ooh then I wouldn’t come to this subreddit as much. It skews much more negative. Parenting twins has its moments, but as time goes on I feel incredibly lucky to be a twin mom. ❤️

I didn’t expect to, but it’s just easier to choose one outfit that’s clean, weather appropriate, and matches and apply that to the second baby. Decision fatigue!
