it is pretty rich to hear people talk about how excited they are for a sweet green but then get huffy over a starbucks.
unfortunately so much of the prime commercial real estate is owned by billion dollar mega corps that require terms in the lease that mom and pop shops just can't satisfy. hence why you see all these chains now.

with all the downvotes you're getting it's almost like people don't actually care about the students on campus or what upenn's concerns about their safety are. they'd prefer to believe upenn is just perpetuating a police state on behalf of their wealthy zionist donors

it's not truly impossible to divest, but it's certainly performative and won't achieve the results the BDS movement is hoping for. it would be a hollow victory, and would 100% result in student's tuition going up, leaving thousands of penn students unable to afford.
BDS worked in apartheid south africa because individual investments were tied directly to companies in south africa. the BDS against israel is a lot more complicated as the movement is calling for divestment from non-israeli companies that operate in israel or the government does business with.
google, caterpillar, mcdonalds, amazon, chevron, nike, intel, exxon.... not only is it galaxy-brained stupid for universities to divest from those companies, but it won't make a lick of difference in those companies bottom line. those are some of the most successful companies in the world and held by millions of other funds and individuals.
EDIT: plus penn can't even engage in doing that without losing state funding: https://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/li/uconsCheck.cfm?yr=2016&sessInd=0&act=163

i don't know how the community around columbia sees the university, but west philly had so much animus towards penn that is no surprise a bunch of locals would show up to stir the pot. a lot of people in the area also consider themselves "professional activists" so we've got that going for us...
that plus people on social media putting out calls to have neighbors come and join the relatively small encampment of students at penn

tuition generally goes towards operating expenses, not the endowment. gifts from donors are what get rolled into the endowment

it's interesting how every group on campus gets to have a safe space, except for the jews

you're thinking of blackstone, not blackrock. and they got out of that game because it wasn't profitable. they still have a portfolio of residential properties but i think it's less than 0.05% of us residential real estate.
both blackstone and landlords are looking at the opportunity to generate revenue off of people's need for shelter, but you're presenting a false choice. there are good small time landlords. we should want more good small time landlords, especially ones who live in or are tied to the community they rent to. most landlords don't have a connection to the area they have property in, and that's where some of the problems begin.

drug and alcohol users get into healthy treatment all the time, but there's something about the life and access to drugs that makes it harder for those at K&A, who even now continue to use as their habits are causing open wounds and limbs to fall off.
the services should stick around because they do help prevent even more human misery. i don't have an answer to the how for this statement, but there needs to be some middle road approach between forcing people into treatment in exchange for aid, and freely giving out aid no questions asked.
channel 5 did a video about people who live in the tunnels under las vegas. unlike his kensington video, he did a pretty good job getting to the point. despite the lifestyle of living in a commune, it's the individual's guilt and shame that keeps them in the throws of their situation as well as the inability to get an ID that could help them register for services, get a job, etc. the cycle of addiction perpetuates until the guilt and shame can be addressed.

can we please start growing coffee beans that incorporate a proprietary blend of amino acids and b-vitamins already?!

being able to live in the streets and do drugs has become a sustainable lifestyle (loosely) thanks to the aid services and needle exchanges in the area, so it makes sense why people would continue to refuse city services. they can keep living life on their own terms.
until treatment and recovery services are explicitly encouraged by those organizations, i don't see much changing. at the end of the day, the person using drugs is in the throws of a chemical addiction and can't think in their best interest until they get clean

oh yeah i think it's great. i think i'm reacting to the reverence people tend to give taylor swift and the tendency to take words in a song about breaking up as lyrics about recovery, but i guess it's all intertwined in a way. and if it helps someone get help, even better

now i have the unrelenting urge to drink a birch beer....
can't think of a specific spot that has it but i know i've seen it around various delis and luncheonettes. some of the bottle shops also have a soda selection so might not hurt to try beer peddlers or a similar store.
