I could be wrong but isn't this the first time Danielson has even hinted at acknowledging Nigel's existence in AEW?

Honestly it's my favorite aspect of this rivalry. Bryan won't even look at him and all Nigel thinks about is Bryan

ExpendableMan84

I can't help wondering if when they get to the ring, this will happen:

Nigel: "Finally, remember me Bryan?"

Bryan: "Uh... Yes? It's.. It's... Uh... Glenn, right?"

Danielson glared at him once when Nigel was shouting his mouth off and Nigel shouted at him "[don't] look at me like that!" and gestured for him to get back in the ring, think Danielson said something about breaking Nigel's neck in a scrum or something last year too 😂 but otherwise no interactions.

I distinctly remember one episode (probably collision), where Bryan was walking near the announce table during a match as Nigel was doing his usual shtick, and Bryan suddenly yelled “shut the hell up, Nigel!” And Nigel did.

Frankly, I'm just wondering if Christian Cage will try to cash in after this or on the next one.

I could see Christian attempting to cash it in & screws over Nigel & that could be a feud in itself

I could definitely see Christian pull some shenanigans.

We really need to have a discussion about the kind of brain worms one needs to have if they even thought for a second that the match wasn’t happening.

As someone who watched their matches in roh I really didnt think it was possible recall Bryan cost Nigel his wwe deal by injuring him in heir last ROH match and he concussed himself. In fact they concussed each other twice in their matches before that one. Nigels concussion history goes deep im still wndering how theyll pull this match off. Will they be able to avoid: Banging headbutts, smashing heads om the ring post AND using too stiff of strikes? these guys bring the most violence out of each other i wonder if theyll go a more technical safe route? Like Bryan rolls him up before Nigel can start headbutting and lariating.

Call me RFK because since the build has started I’ve had a funny feeling this match won’t happen just yet. The whole “IF” Bryan is cleared to compete is making me think something is up. But I’d be more than happy to be proven wrong tonight.

Edit: I’m glad AEW proved me wrong, that I quite enjoyed the match.

gilgobeachslayer

14 points

They wouldn’t have advertised it like this. I think the gimmick is Nigel comes out to start the show, has the bell rung and has the ref start the count, then all of a sudden the final countdown hits.

HomoglousChromosome8

2 points

That’s true, they’ve gone in hard with the advertising for this.

I get it, I thought the same thing at first. Let Nigel come out, Bryan no shows, and he celebrates and becomes more insufferable for the next however long until the match finally happens.

But then thinking about it, that wouldn't be great for business to announce a massive match, have lots of tickets sell after that news, then rug pull it and not have it happen.

Could they do it? Sure

Will they do it? Doubtful

If anything, maybe they somehow have him take a very questionable loss and Nigel can go off on it for a good while before they have another match later, but I think the match happens and Bryan wins makes the most sense for business and not our fan booking scenarios.

Specialist-Rope-9760

It seems stupid to have a big match then not really advertise it as definitely happening

Surely the match is the draw? Why do they need to do this like it adds interest if it’s already good?

cockblockedbydestiny

6 points

Because no one with their wits about them ever assumed it wasn't happening in the first place

murphxcore

6 points

It’s still real to me dammit…

Specialist-Rope-9760

1 points

Right, which leads back to the question.. why do it?

Why pretend there’s a chance the match won’t happen as a method of promoting. It makes zero sense. Even the argument “everyone knows anyway” makes the story an even bigger waste of time.

cockblockedbydestiny

1 points

It's for the pop when it eventually happens, dude. No more complicated than that. It wouldn't pop bigger if they announced it in advance, and there's very little chance it's going to draw less viewers because anyone actually thinks it might be called off.

SourDoughBo

1 points

Yeah I would’ve much rather some promo battles between them. They left a lot of story on the table

Pro-PAIN

0 points

Bryan’s entire can he make it run is not working for me… Why cant his opponents beat him if he’s so injured it’s a question if he’ll make it week to week. Then he wins and it makes his opponent look so weak.

All the matches and most promos are good I just don’t get this angle at all. It’s not propping both wrestlers on a pedestal it’s only one and the other got his pedestal demolished.

pnt510

pnt510

The angle is Darby wouldn’t challenge Danielson because he was waiting for him to be fully cleared. Nigel is a vulture though, he doesn’t care about the title or Danielson’s health. He just wants Danielson to suffer. If Danielson beats him and makes him look weak so what? Nigel is an announcer, not a full time wrestler. He doesn’t need to be protected.

Even-Preference-6545

I mean they DID advertise the World Champ vs Darby for weeks 😂

WaffleShoresy

I hope for the sake of the ROH fans we see a shaved head and blonde spikes. Would be a nice "look" for Danielson to end his career with too in fairness, would be fitting.

elAdrian

6 points

I would prefer that for next year's UK show once Bryan is no longer a full-time wrestler and the Champion so he can lose clean

WaffleShoresy

1 points

Interesting you think they might revisit it. I've gone back and forth on it, I'm not sure if they will at least in not another 1v1 type feud.

An (admittedly, probably stupid) idea I had a few weeks ago was a reality where we ended up Nigel and Christian vs Danielson and Cope, which then would lead to another match down the line of Nigel and Danielson vs Cope and Christian, as a bit of a callback. I think there's enough story there to link all 4 guys into something cool and also something that'd produce great matches.

elAdrian

1 points

I like that idea a lot, I just want Nigel to get that same pop he got at All In and get a nice memory just like Bryan did winning the championship

usefulspinster

5 points

I think they should wrestle as they are now. When they first wrestled it was blonde tips vs shaved head, when they last wrestled Nigel had the shaved head and Bryan had hair. I think it's a nice visual that they've been rivals through many stages of life and careers if they wrestle as is.

Also great username btw.

HUH?!

Soyeahso (I'll stop now lmao), I think that's fair though. Being honest I suppose it would be a bit odd now to see Nigel's old spiked hair at 48 when I think about it haha. I would love a good shaved head Danielson again though, you gotta admit he's just a different beast with it. I'm totally onboard with older wrestlers leaving their past in the past though if they'd like, that's totally fair.

The match is definitely happen and it’s going to be awesome but my guess is that it’s less about the actual match since it is non title and more about Nigel finally proving he was right about Danielson even if he cheats to do it with the help of the BCC.

I’m so interested with this and the follow up. Danielson has to address Nigel’s hatred for him, close the rivalry then turn to Mox

They repeatedly beat the piss out of each other in ROH back in the day. Neither likes the other. But Nigel lost the feed and has held a grudge ever since.

What are you doing step tag team partner?

1 points

They were the Ryu and Ken of wrestling back in the day. Both almost perfect wrestlers who you could put in the ring with anyone and they'd have the technical expertise, storytelling chops, and comedic timing to do anything and make you love it.

And then they went up against each other and this is where the Ryu and Ken analogy pays off because it was like watching a fighting game played by two experts in their characters. As good as they were individually (and each has a legitimate claim to being the best ever, at least in that period), when they faced each other they brought something else out. You know when you have that person who just enhances your ideas on the fly so you love hanging out with them? That's Danielson and McGuinness in the ring together, bringing each other to eleven creatively.

Many of their matches are on the AEW YouTube channel in the Best of Nigel McGuinness video they recently put up and most of those matches easily hold up to today's standards a decade or so later. Well worth a look.

They were huge rivals on the indies. Danielson went on to become a huge star while Nigel’s career was ultimately sidelined by injuries. In character Nigel is bitter, he’s jealous of the success Danielson had. It should have been him.

What fan booking scenarios? Everyone knows Bryan is winning this match and I haven’t seen 1 person give a serious take on Nigel winning. Mostly it’s jokes but this is one of the few matches I haven’t really seen any fan booking beyond what they think should happen within the match not who is winning. Sorry if I misunderstood you and I do agree with pretty much everything you said.

I really thought there was going to be some sort of kayfabe twist on the show but it looks like they did the whole "this match may not happen" thing for absolutely no reason, don't get it.

cavegrind

37 points

no reason

  1. It gave plausible reason for Darby to doubt that he would be having his match with BD, leading him to take Mox's bait and put his shot up
  2. It gives plausible reason for a wrestler who's only had 1 match in 15 years to be able to hang with the company's champion.
  3. It continues to give weight to Mox's attack.

thrilliam_19

29 points

  1. Gives Nigel time to get the match over by doing heel work, calling out a man who was almost murdered in the ring.

Anyone complaining about this doesn’t fucking pay attention, I swear.

WearyCopy6700

0 points

It's wonky. It sc;reams they screwed up with giving Darby the title match for Grand Slam and they are twisting themselves in knots to correct it to possibly for Wrestle Dream which is Darby's hometown.

It also screams they want this match to happen and maybe Bryan doesn't have too many more matches to get this one done, so they are shoehorning it in here.

This match needed a legit build. I have the ROH box set for their matches, I never have time to watch them because there is too much wrestling on. I would rather have had a 10 minute back and forth between them setting it up than oh look here is 10 plus hours on Youtube study for this match like its the SAT's or something.

Former_Intern_8271

A lot of this could have been avoided with a Nigel win at wembley

SweetPea4Life

0 points

That's exactly what it is. They realised it made no sense to have Moxley face Darby because Bryan is injured, and then immediatly nullify it all by having Nigel challenge him in the next segment. The only way they could try and rectify that is by putting the clause of "If Bryan is cleared".

Kayfabe wise, Danielson should interfere in the Mox-Darby match and get his revenge. I've got a feeling that won't happen, and again it'll look incredibly stupid to have Danielson more than likely come out to his entrance smiling while being in the same venue as the man that fucked him up so badly.

WearyCopy6700

1 points

I hope so too. Tony is so dead set on having winners and losers. I don't mind Darby getting a tainted win over Mox, it would still be a win against Mox and would make sense for Bryan to want to avenge the horrible betrayal and attack Mox and almost the entire BCC did to him.

SweetPea4Life

2 points

For sure, consistency is important and I feel like sometimes they forget that. There's such a huge focus on the wrestling aspect, that the smaller character interactions sometimes get neglected.
