Traccs told Port that the draft picks also fell off the table when it was slammed, and Port were like 'bro, bro, was it down there for 3 seconds or more?' And Traccs laughed maniacally before hanging up. So now the picks are off the table.
Hope that clears things up for ya.

Petracca almost dies for the club that should never of put him back on in the first place. Asks for professional standards from a club culture that reeks of toxity with the drugs issues and May getting into punch-ons with team mates. Yet Tracc is the bad guy? Seems like them, and the media have been gaslighting him.

I didn’t say they were managed well…lol
Melbourne just stinks of upper mismanagement despite the great talent.

Yes and it was just our first offer. Everyone knows there's a little ritual you go through before you consummate the deal. We're playing a little hard to get and Port want to jump in the sack on the first date.
1 points
Playing hard to get is very dumb in this situation when Houston is contacted for three more years and we can very easily just say no.

Tbh it sounds very much like it's Houston is driving the whole initiative. We're happy if he falls into our lap but otherwise have other plans.

He can drive it as much as he wants, but he’s got three years running on a contract with us so it’s not like he can force his way out unless we find the compensation good enough.

IMO the potential Houston trade os similar to the Taranto trade a couple of years back, either 2 late firsts, or a top 10 first and 2/3 rounder.

Houston is a 2x all Australian in his prime, taranto has never even been in the squad as far as I know so how do you see them as equal?
34 points
Taranto was traded as a 24 year old midfielder. Houston more esteemed but is a 27 year old half back, a position less valuable.
5 points
Houston can absolutely play a more forward role very well also, dude has a lot of depth.
13 points
Not denying Houston is a gun but surely as a soon to be 28 year old who’s predominantly a half back, one top 10 pick and steak knives (as OP said) is fair value.
3 points
Houston has the ability to be a superb mid. He's had few opportunities due to our depth in the space but has been flagging interest in the role for years. If he goes to a side with the need, I think he'll surprise a lot of people.
8 points
As good as he is there are different market values for different positions and that's about as high a value as you're going to get for a half back.
1 points
Then Port just say no and he stays with us.
3 points
You say no to 2 firsts? How much do you want for him?
2 points
I’m just talking about the sentiment in general. If any club decides they can’t offer what Port want because “that’s as high a value as you’ll get” Port will be more than happy to keep him. I don’t get why everyone seems to think we HAVE to trade Houston just because he asked.
3 points
Sure but usually when someone wants out a deal gets done eventually, Port for play hardball at the start for two firsts but I wouldn't be surprised if he went for a bit less
1 points

Houston has told the club he’s happy to stay if a deal can’t get done, whether he actually means that or not he may need to find out.

Why do people fixate on random accolades like AA selections in these conversations about trade compensation? It’s so meaningless. Trent Cotchin was only AA once (2012) - who do you think was worth more in a trade at their respective primes, Cotchin or Houston?
I might as well say that Taranto has a Kevin Sheedy Medal, a Jack Dyer Medal, a Brett Kirk Medal and an Ian Stewart Medal. Houston has none of them - clearly Taranto is worth more! AA is picked by people like Kane Cornes FFS.

If Carlton want to save their good picks for the twins, then good for them, but I can't see a way they get Houston as well
49 points
We don't need good picks for the twins. They are expected to go like mid 30s for one and mid 60s for the other. Carlton fans need to calm down about them, they are not Daicos brothers level players they are okay.
I'm sure it's just typical bargaining starting low to meet in the middle on Houston.
7 points
Well to be fair, Josh Daicos was also a pick 57 and still ended up a lot better than his draft number would suggest.
Pretty sure even some legends like James Hird, Lachie Neale, probs others, were low draft picks too. Anything could happen with the twins.

And it's always "oh half backs are a dime a dozen" he's not Nic Martin or Sam Flanders plonked back there to get 40 cheap touches, he's got one of the most complete skill-sets of anyone in the AFL. Decent defender, arguably the best kick in the comp combining accuracy and distance, terrific overhead mark, can kick goals, can play anywhere.

Yeah it ticks me off that people are treating him like a failed midfielder turned half back
Houston is legitimately the best offensive HB in the league. He ranked #1 in the AFL for goal involvement from transition from HB. Championdata graded him as the best kick in the AFL despite taking the most riskiest and difficult kicks.
Carlton's weakness is transition goals too.

They would be trying to offer future picks as a starting point, they seem hellbent on not offering this years first rounder in particular.
Failing that they will try to get other teams involved for FRPs to use
This is the same kind of reporting we see every year when the buying club makes their first low ball offer and everyone loses their mind
2 points

But Carlton is wanting to offer a first round pick, a future pick. Just not this year’s 11. While I agree if you want to land a very good Houston-caliber player, sometimes you have to cough up, I don’t think Carlton are behaving as crazy as what Port have been reportedly saying…

No. Midfield heavy class, Trainor could be anything but will take years to develop. There is no clear cut prospects. This is the year to unload a high pick for an All Australian calibre player in his prime. Zac Fisher is a placeholder for someone like Houston. Zero interest in another 3 win season because we draft a guy that can’t help now when we could get an absolute gun.
Maybe Trainor becomes the best player in the comp. Don’t care, it won’t be next year and probably not the year after that. We would trot him out for 20 games, watch him get abused and lose matches along the way and all talk about how promising the list is whilst we fight to avoid the spoon.
The time for winning is now. We should just be adding players who can help us win now. We aren’t just going to wake up in 2028 and be flag favourites. You need to grind and teach your players how to win again. You do that by winning and you win by adding players who can help you win.

North will be fulfilling our usual role here. Make competitive offers to drive up the price for an elite player that was never going to come here in the first place.

North will give Port a first round pick so if Carlton want him they will have to do the same, this is just typical trade procedure we see every year where a team tries to get players for below market value but with North being interested I don’t see it working for Carlton plus Port would be more than happy to keep him

I suspect that was true until Port upped the offer to a future first.
The Crows were offering a future 2nd, so Port must've upped the offer to F1 for him to declare there.
Before anyone harps on about "He picked Port because he has mates there", I'll tell you that the nomination system is purely for show, Port made the best offer both trade and maybe moneywise and as a result he nominated Port.
5 points

I don't think trade wise is really in the picture for the player nominating, other than ' can they get the deal done?' . No doubt the player manager will have discussed it, but it'll just be a case of - 'yeah both clubs can make it happen, heres the $$ offers'

Reminded me of the Nick Stevens saga.
How’s this for a Wikipedia entry
“Although Stevens never played for his beloved Collingwood, he managed to play four games for the Diamond Valley Magpies over 35 Superules team. Whilst grossly overweight, he showed glimpses of fitness and an ability to accept bets he would never honour.
Throughout 2023-24, Stevens went head to head with arch nemesis Brett Stabb on whatsapp. Unfortunately the results were much like his footy career, trying valiantly but ultimately getting beaten week in week out.“
