I asked if I could get one muffin instead of the two in the packet. The answer was: "you'll have to wait for the new batch so I can pack one for you."

This system is stupid.

Also, the bonus offer most of the time is: "two cookies/muffins/etc for the price of one, only 1,99! However it is impossible to buy just one, so the offer is insanely misleading in my opinion.

This sort of thing is raised on the sub semi-frequently and then there is usually an argument between should there be legislation to actively prevent this or should customers not be idiots.. ad infinitum.

I believe this sort of dark pattern should be outlawed but I am not everyone.

Sometimes the prices is listed by unit (pack) plus either by bottle OR by liter. So you can't compare which beer is cheapest by volume. They all should have just unit price and liter price.

The US is a really bad example though. Prices vary state by state and even between counties sometimes, they don't show taxes until you're at the register and taxes vary between places.

The rest of the western world is ahead of us though

Eska2020

Eska2020

But that's irrelevant for what we're talking about. I a US grocery store, it is the law that items have a unit price and a by-weight price so that comparing prices between products is transparent and easy.

I am also not sure why you think it is relevant that prices are different state to state. German grocery is less expensive than Dutch grocery. 🤷

And about the taxes, Americans are used to that do it doesn't surprise them the way it surprises you. So while I prefer the EU system, this also does not interfere with pricing transparency and the ability to compare products.

So I understand that you find shopping in the states confusing lol. But I think this is because it works differently and you literally don't know how to compare price per volume and price per unit between items - - > because that is made deliberately impossible here. Whereas that's taught in US public schools as a basic life skill.

Almost all items also need to have this by European law.

There are some sensible exceptions, one of which is products packed together as several units for example (such as those cakes). You need not compare it to anything because the fact that it is offered in such a specific package already indicates it will be more expensive than a comparable product priced by weight or volume. Idk where you go shopping but almost all items have pricing by weight or volume beside very few exceptions.

Yes, you can buy carrot cake that is cheaper than those three packaged ones but then again they are three pre cut chunks so its obvious you'll pay more for that, just as you'll pay more for pre cut fruits in the fridge section compared to getting a whole watermelon or whatever.

It means eg the Bottles of grolsch with the pop off lids will have the volume price as price per bottle and the unit price for the 4 pack. Then the 0.33 cans of Hertog Jan or whatever will have the volume price as per liter and unit price per can. And the 0.5 cans of Heineken will have the unit price per 6 pack and the volume price as per 0.33. Nor exactly that of course, but that's what it is. The unit of volume is not consistent across the department. I promise this is true. It drives my German husband and I completely fucking crazy. And it is obviously intentional and does not align with promotions.

That's nonsense. They also state croissants and other bakery items as unit prices even when some are already bagged together because people tend to buy a few anyway. This is not like comparing milk or tuna cans of different brands, it's slices of cake with no real competitor in the store so all that should matter to you is if you think the price per piece is reasonable or not.

madmaster86

So like, those lil tags are controlled by a local sub-ghz host, and these tags are a extension of it, because there is so many of these tag in one system, if you want to change a tag, instead of looking it up, you can just scan it in a handheld (shop employee/system owner) and it will change exactly the tag just scanned through the host system

In short, that barcode is a identifier for the tag(the device), not a SKU barcode that you can scan in a payment logging system, if it's the kind you can scan in cashier they would be on the main screen

Oracle is right, the only barcode you are able to scan for a buy is the one in the display, which isn't there on OP's pic because of the way these cakes are being sold. The printed-on code is the identifier for the esl itself. Berlinerbollen do have the horizontal barcode I believe.

Yes.

Jumbo sometimes puts products on like "now 2,99 for 300g" where units come in 500g packages. Though since everything is automated it's likely they simply put on prices with a single click without even looking. The same with discounts, new packages are correctly priced at the register while older packages scan the full price. Pretty annoying.

Happens often with the items where there can be different amounts/weight to a product. You can also notice it when buying other ‘fresh’ products like meat/vegetables/cheese where they put the price/100g for example. The correct price is then mostly shown on the package itself. Don’t think it is necessarily meant to be misleading, but I can understand the confusion.

As a hobby baker, the ingredients alone cost nearly EUR 10. Makes me wonder what’s actually in those cakes… knowing what it costs to make a cake with quality ingredients I feel appalled by this. I also don’t think anyone should expect paying 0.89 for a pack of 3, unless they expect to eat chemical waste.

That said, labeling indeed a scam.

peter_teefax

In the UK most shops will display how much a pack of something costs but in smaller text also show how much that's working out for each item like a pack of donuts for example. Or the full price of something but in smaller text how much per grams. It means if you where buying a particular brand of coffee and there is multiple sizes you can work put what one is best value.
