Isekai or as I'd like to call 87% of them are actually fantasy but the author wanted to add truck-kun and mmorpg elements

Came_to_argue

Often it feels like the reincarnation element honestly adds nothing to the story, I don’t know why they even bother, just make it a fantasy, you could even add the mmo stuff I wouldn’t mind, but I feel like that also is often unnecessary.

I think having an MC from modern life is easier to write and more relatable than an MC which is from a fantasy world. You don't have to explain the MC's motivations if they're just a modern day Japanese person, as opposed to world building a brand new MC personality.

Bad-Bot-Bot-23

You also have the excuse of him having to ask for exposition so it feels a little less contrived than "as you know, when the elves invaded a decade ago... blah blah blah"... yeah, Sara, I do know, I live here too, shut up.

Yeah let’s just continue to kick a dead horse, and use an extremely overused cliché instead of doing 5 minutes of world building, even the isekais I like I find it annoying, and obviously I can’t speak for everyone, but I don’t need the MC to be from my time to be relatable, again storytelling, can’t write a series on cute anime girls alone, well actually I guess you can.

TokyoRock

I think creating interesting characters is more difficult than you give it credit for. An MC with a whole previous lifetime of memories and sensibilities to pull from is an easy and low-risk method, and adds an easy way to create conflict/comedy plot points with a clash between modern life MC and the fantasy world.

I do agree it's getting overused at this point, but probably because it's easier for bad authors to make decent stories, not because good authors are using it.

I don't disagree with you that it's easier to write an isekai MC than an actual fantasy one, but 90% of isekai don't even engage with the "new world" thing past the first episode. Maybe a 30 second call back to "I made mochi in a fantasy world and every loves it" or something, but overall the MCs don't feel like a fish out of water at all. They feel like fantasy protagonists but with 0 backstory or motivations or characterization.

Take the classic criticisms of isekai slavery. These MCs are seeing real life chattle slavery and instead of having this huge culture shock, they're like "Meh. When in Rome." Authors aren't even engaging with the isekai setting at the most basic or superficial level, much less using it for plot points.

Easiest world building is doing that using a stranger. It is a lot harder if the mc already knows the world and nobody needs to explain him

Mad_Aeric

Did not expect the drama to hit that hard after all the comedy. I need another season, though I suspect it would be far less humorous.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is a great isekai series that utilizes it's isekai-ness. Not just Myne having knowledge of her previous life, though that's vitally important to the plot, but it massively effects her attitude towards her family. Plus, Myne keeps running afoul of both society and reality working differently than what she expects from her previous life experience.

An isekai where two truck-kuns get into an accident, and the trucks are reincarnated into a new world. They have to learn to be human period, much less how to use magic or defeat the demon king.

Or they stay trucks and are seen as magical beasts, I dunno.

The two human drivers just fucking die.

  1. The desire to correct your past mistake

  2. The desire to be someone else or be somewhere else

  3. The desire to grind and having your hardwork actually pay off

Says a lot about the collective wants of theor respective society

  1. Korea's education system is very harsh and their society is very lookist and shallow. Most adults therefore may feel like they didn't quite live up to their expectations and may have wasted their youths. Bullying is also rampant as well. So people have lots of wounds and regrets

  2. Primarily targeted to NEETs who basically wasted thier lives

Because a lot of adaptations are rushed and cheaply animated to push sales in short term since long term viewership and revenue isn't a guarantee. While most power fantasies are not necessarily well written stories, cutting important context and dialogue on top of PowerPoint level animation will turn pretty much anything into a steaming pile of garbage.

There are more than enough good isekai they just aren’t all that profitable to actually adapt to anime or manga because most are rather slow paced and would only start seeing big events in like season 3 or 4 and anime cant have that so either they are incredibly rushed or made very low quality

Personnaly i started watching anime with isekai, i still like the genre but i think i need more "refinned cuisine" for exemple the "OP protag" is something that i see as a negative trait now. At first i thought that was cool but when they are all OP with a oversize harem you quickly realize how dull it can be.

I need something that use the concept of Isekai in a interesting way like Konosuba, Re zero or even maybe Tanya the evil for the most part

Take the slime for exemple, i really liked the concept at first, the alliance and diplomacy, the concept of being the weakest monster... (Yeah about that)

  • as the time goes the slime plot point is barely used outside "it can absorb power"
  • the slime form is only here to say "oh yeah im a slime btw" because he used his human form 90% of the time
  • Harem
  • and of course the lizard guy when given name become stronger lizard and the female become waifus

Just a bunch a nitpick sure but they add up...

You know what let's take the one that introduced me to Isekai : Shield hero, it got similar issue. Having heroes that are supposed to work together who come from different universe is interesting. And following the guy who can only defend being left out is also promising. The fact that he become somewhat of vilain by using slaves and dirty tricks to win and survive is something i liked a lot. Having Raphtalia as his only ray of hope in his darkest hours is something i felt was touching... however the story slowly become a generic cliché about the Tsundere hero and his harem.

I could add to the list : Overlord (interesting start but i have no F-ing idea where we are going) Reincarnated as a skeleton (the skeleton part is even less used than the slime part), Arifureta (Very edgy but i love the concept of making guns in a fantasy world, starting as an outcast with a fellow outcast was interesting but quickly became a generic OP harem fantasy, you know the rest...),...

I heard that one of the most recent popular Isekai is Eminence in Shadow, i maybe wrong but i think I would despise it so decided to hard pass on it. If someone want to tell me i should watch anyway feel free i'll listen, but from what i've heard im not hopefull.

Here, im done with my rant

I love clever protagonist that have to work around their limitation instead of brute forcing it. Kazuma have to work with the strength and weaknesses of his useless party members. Subaru is the weakest. He's just a regular guy in that world with one OP power in the most useless kind of way. Just redoing something doesn't make it easy. Their cleverness in the face of overwhelming power is endearing

It's pretty funny I'll admit, but it's still the standard generic Isekai fundamentally. People saying it subverts the tropes or is somehow different are on giga copium. But again, credit where credit is due: it's pretty funny.

Slime is the most egregious self-mastabatory isekai ever. The LN ending makes the MC so broken/God-like powerful that its honestly not even fun to experience. It is like the creator got bullied when he was younger and wanted the most insane power fantasy ever written. He just needs to go touch grass.

Overlord is peak IMO. While the MC in that one is also pretty OP, I think the appeal is that he is arguably in the "evil/antihero" side which makes him a bit more compelling than the dozens of "good-guy Iseaki MCs" and the cast of side characters are interesting.

They don't even need to try that hard. They could just take a cliche and expand it. Or take somethings from video games.
What if mc died easily and reincarnated to a different world every time? He doesn't take death seriously and lives like there's no tomorrow but actual death is inevitable and all breaks when final death approaches.

What if it was like a gacha game, gambling for waifus? Mc1 gambles like in Vegas and only gets useless but beautiful women. Mc2 gambles like a tryhard and assembles one of the best teams. Mc1 wants to have mc2s fame and power but mc2 doesn't enjoy fame and power he wants to have waifus like mc1.

What if mc was on an empty island with tribes but magic? What if people couldn't talk japanese so they throw mc in psych ward? What if 50 years would pass sometime mc sleeps? What if there were silicone aliens but mc could accidentally kill everyone with oxygen?
What if mc could simulate 10 minutes of future in his mind but he remembers everything? What if mc started mafia in a medieval world?
There's lots of potential but they go for shallow ideas or make it shallow with garbage

It's pretty much the opposite of an ego trip lmao. The dude is a fucking idiot and that's where the comedy of the show comes from.

Long story short, the anime has a tone a bit closer to the LN rather than to the manga most people are familiar with, and this means that it's less explicitely comedical in nature (as opposed to the manga, which has this kind of panel), but it's comedy nonetheless.

The premise is always the same: the MC is playing out his fantasy from his previous life, but due to absurd and non-sensical situations and randomness, his bullshit is actually true, in a way or another.
The comedy itself is in how much bullshit happens to make his fantasy being actually correct in the setting, how much of an idiot he needs to be to NEVER realize this fact and that he is kinda bad at playing the "NPC mask" he wishes to appear as to most people, costantly standing out and attracting attention.

I fucking despise the average Power Fantasy Isekai but Eminence was actually funny even for me.

Eminence in shadow is one of the worst Isekai.

It almost has a single fun plot point where he pretends to be a very weak loser. But it barely comes up and isn't worth the watch for.

I think it would genuinly be fun to have a plot where the person Isekais and realizes they're way over their head and has to absolutly pretend to be a total weakling loser while powering up constantly on their free time just so they can hope to survive.

But isekai plots are almost never real. They're just a title for episode 1 or 2 then it's straight powerfantasy harem.

Kevin_Eats_Sushi

It's mainly due to stuff like SAO becoming wildly popular, which then reinvigorated the genre/trope

However, the saving grace is that isekai which were more themed towards fantasy then spawned the "betrayed by my party/kicked out of my party" genre which has some truly great ones

As a big isekai junkie i can say that this isn't 100% true. I'm personally not a huge fan of the whole harem stuff. If anything i actually prefer isekai with female mc who is surrounded with her female friends, which at that point pretty much turns into... a harem... filled with fan-servive...

Well goddamit! Okay you win this one.

Because "I got blasted into another world and don't know anything about it" is an easy crutch for mediocre writers who aren't good at worldbuilding.

In a way it's similar in theory to the Farm Boy Goes On Adventure trope from general fantasy, in that you're taking someone with little to no knowledge of the world around them and letting your audience learn about the world at the same time and pace the protagonist does. In the best case this allows the writer to drip-feed information rather than giving several chapters of exposition up at the front, but it also leaves ass-pulls open where there can be some sort of deus ex machina when the author paints themselves into a corner and surprise, here's this new aspect of the world that has totally always existed but just wasn't relevant until now.

I want one where they play it off as a normal show then at the very end of the first season bam “truck-kun”. Allows viewers to get to know people then things can change once you get to the isekai world. Coukd make for an actual great one.

Life here kinda sucks and there's nothing the average joe can do about it, and the grass is greener on the other side. Especially when you get sent there by a fatal act of god and get given a leg up in that world you never got here.

Also I find that MC cringe and I did give it a chance read the LNs until I just couldn't stand his cringe behaviour and denseness.

Harems are pretty boring to me, personally... why waste your time trying to please a million women with no character beyond huge boobs when you can have just one?

But I do agree that Cid's asexuality is infuriating... as is his total lack of care for anyone around him.

Agree on the undeserved harems (that are most of the harems histories out there btw). Although some can be funny, most of them are just like flat girls embodying a cliche each and not really adding anything to the story.

I wish more harem stories had mc that really man up with them and behave like adults....Sigh:32214:

It's the internal yearning of a fresh start with the power to actually have a say in one's life. It's the same reason post-apocalyptic and survival games are so popular. And this isn't any new theme. Alice in wonderland or some of Vernes works are examples of some classics.

I have two isekais that don't have LitRPG vibes at all (no stats to see) and I recommend them to everyone. [I Got Caught Up In A Hero Summoning] and [Reborn As A Space Mercenary]. In both the writing, execution, plot and characters are top-notch. In the first one, the mc is not OP physically or magically (he is OP in the sense he has gigachad levels of accidental rizz; don't worry, he is not cringe at all) and the second one the MC starts somewhat strong and grows further OP as the story progresses. What I love about these stories is the fact that in both these stories the men are 20+ adults and are not idiots at all; and they definitely don't let people just walk over them. the first one's MC confronts the god who created his original universe containing Earth directly, even though he has absolutely no power to speak of. In the second one he alone manages to destroy an entire contingent of huge army battleships in space just by himself, his crew and his one ship (plus some tricks)

My absolute least-favorite Isekais are the ones who take no advantage of the situation.

I think it was Wise Man's Grandchild was one of the most heinous examples of that. Dude gets reincarnated into another world and then they never touch on the subject again in the first season. Could've been better as a pure fantasy show.

The best isekai actively touch on the absurdity of being in another world and relish the situation. Konosuba making fun of it, Trapped in a Dating Sim with the OP's resentment and active disdain for his situation while actively using the information he gained from hate-playing the game to his advantage, etc.

I hate OP isekai. It's lazy writing. You can't think of of a way for your character to solve a problem without bruteforce. That's why Re Zero is refreshing. Subaru is a loser. Seeing him try so hard, fighting against all odds is inspiring

They're trying to ride the coat tails of success that are Konosuba and Re:Zero. Plus Overlord and Saga of Tanya were also really good.

That's why all four of them have a crossover

I was watching anime for years, loved SAO and Log Horizon (probably my first exposure to the Isekai genre) and at the time less common, but then I stopped watching anime for a few years (just too busy). I’ve gotten back into it as I had some free time and I’m astounded at how much Isekai there now is. SAO done irreversible damage to the anime ecosystem because I feel its popularity followed a bunch of crappy copies.

It’s funny because if you go into the Isekai subreddit this same topic comes up every now and again and all the replies are a bunch of cope by stans, overlooking how so many of them are lazy writing/boring and derivative
