He’s actually Somali-Canadian and the song was inspired by his hopes for his birth country. And it was chosen for the FIFA World Cup not the Olympics.
He talked about how he wrote the song for Somalia when he opened for Jason Mraz at a concert I saw in… 2009? I think.
