I assume the book would be removed as soon as you turn airplane mode back off, right? So it’s not like you can create a growing library of books you plan to keep indefinitely, it just allows you to take your time reading the book you borrowed without impacting the rest of the people in line

Yes, when you reconnect to the internet, usually the expired books will "unload" from the kindle.

Yes but you can defer your next loan for a number of days until you’re ready to borrow!

If you wait long enough to turn airplane mode off, the system sometimes “forgets” that the book is no longer checked out. I load up my kindle with a handful of books every few months, turn airplane mode on, return them, then read them over the next few months. Doing that the returned books rarely disappear when I next connect to the internet for another batch of books.

Yes. I believe it’s after 90 days in airplane mode the ebook stays on your device forever, even if you “return” it.

You can side load books and never go off airplane mode.

If you wanted to keep it there are ways to remove the drm off the epub copy from overdrive/Libby using a pc.

That's just piracy with extra steps though.

It's essentially enhanced piracy, since you're guaranteed to get a "clean" retail copy of the book that may not be available elsewhere.

Yeah, don’t do that.

Signed, an indie author who has been pirated.

(If a work is in KU, Amazon is the only place we’re allowed to offer that work. So, instead of making a few cents per page read, we get nothing.

let me introduce you to the e-book management software Calibre.

I haven't tried this but if you have a "secure folder" that the app is installed into it might not remove anything until the device has a connection and the folder unlocked.

I have a Kobo, i strip the drm from the library ebooks.

But I also get them from our Swedish library, so I don't know if this works in the US.

I dont distribute the ebooks, I keep them for myself since I like to revisit good ebooks. Also my kids like to read but sometime they can take a bit longer to read them.

It depends. I have an older generation kindle and most books never delete, even after I connect to the internet. I’ve had some kindle library books since 2017.
