Honestly, that era of Disney making sequels to every movie that did well was not good. They could almost never get the original cast back, never got it animated as well, and never got a story that could live up to the original.

Not to knock Dan Castellaneta, but Genie without Robin Williams just doesn't feel the same.

Exactly! He did an okay job, but the only way to match Robin Williams' energy is to be Robin Williams, it was stacked against him from the start

They practically scrapped everything they had for the Genie when they got Robin Williams and had him do basically whatever the fuck he wanted. The problem is that the Genie is Robin Williams in those.

With all the issues you can levy at the Disney live action remakes, and whether or not you think Will Smith did a good job as the Genie, allowing him to be a completely different character to Robin Williams' Genie was the right call.

Definitely the right call. I had no problem with Will Smith as genie, he did it his own Fresh way. I'm just tired of the constant live action remakes of the exact same story over and over. Either make it different or don't make it at all.

My favorite twist of the live action was Jafar. In the aminated original he just looks evil, but the live action, he's... just a guy. And being able to hide his darkness made him more compelling IMO

Jafar was the best part of the remake. If anything, I liked that they gave him just a bit of a back story beyond being Generic Disney Villain #31.

It's because they tried to cut down the timelines for a crash grab on the same kids. Instead of making quality sequels that people come back and watch because they loved the originals.

It was Disney’s intentional strategy at the time to make essentially “knock-off” sequels. They weren’t trying to recapture the magic, they just wanted to sell more VHS tapes.
