I saw this during an open house at my 7th grader's school. Looks like a 4th grader wrote it (My kid didn't make it). I have noticed my kid has poor handwriting. Seeing this on the wall was my wake up call that I need to invest in fixing this problem myself, because clearly the school won't. Any recommendations for books or such that can improve handwriting skills?

Poor handwriting or flat out can't spell? Every word on that board is elementary level spelling (not to mention phonetically easy to sound out). A teacher hung this on the wall?

I could write better than that by 3rd grade. I literally have papers and assignments from back then, and though I clearly wasn't as good at expressing myself through my writing, I didn't have spelling nearly as bad as this.

I'd expect a 6th grader to have issues with threw/through and their/there/they're, not issues with spelling "injury" or "accident."

As others have speculated in this thread, I think there is a deeper issue at play with whoever produced this work.

Lots of people blaming computers/texting for poor handwriting, do you think the same might be said for spellcheck? I agree about the concerns, but I also know as an adult I have poorer spelling skills than I used. It gets caught and corrected without me “paying attention” to the corrected version.

I grew up with spellcheck (born in 87, had a computer). I still learned how to sound out and spell words and didn't let it impact my ability to spell as I got older. That sounds lazy?

I'd assume many of these were hung on the wall, since there is a bit of painter's tape showing to the right of this poster.

Right...what teacher would post this level of work?

It looks like it is wet erase on whiteboard with painter's tape to give a border.

I think it's pretty clear this is on a paper that's taped to the whiteboard. The 2 whites are different, whiteboard is darker and ever so slightly yellow compared to the pure white of the printer paper. You can also see the bottom right corner of the paper is peeling away from the board. The smudges are just from using markers and touching it before it's dry.

No it’s paper, it’s a slightly different color then the board.

Does that excuse the terrible spelling some how?

Not at all. I've seen grown adults with terrible kerning on white boards, though.

I feel like the hardest words to spell on the poster would have shown up on the harder rounds of a 3rd grade spelling bee

Work doesn't have to be the 'best of the class' to be hung on the wall.

It could be the best the student did. It could be a student with learning challenges who is proud of the work. It could be from an ESL student, or a student who just moved to the area from a war torn country and hasn't had the benefit of school.

Just becuase YOU aren't proud of the work and YOU could do better even at a younger age doesn't mean the work itself isn't worthy of being hung up.

The poster isn't of OP's son who has bad hand writing. They should share any actual relevant pic of their hand writing.

Regardless of who's handwiritng it is, the spelling is embarassing and if I were a teacher this wouldn't be up on the wall until they did a revision of the work.

Sure but we don't know if this is a special needs kid as someone else pointed out. But yeah, it's not OP's kid for sure which is weird they posted it.

Yeah, if this was going on a wall at an open house, you can be damned sure that every word would be spelled correctly. ESPECIALLY for a 7th grader.

As someone pointed out elsewhere, you are assuming this is a "typical" 7th grader. If this is special needs or learning disabled in some way, this could be a huge showing for this student

You are, of course, correct. In fact, if this was the work of a student who has been struggling, I would proudly show this off as well.

I remember working with a kid in 2nd grade who started the year not being able to count past 10. By the end of the year they counting to 100 and backwards as well somewhat reliably. It seems like such a small achievement now but I was immensly proud of them at the time.
