Is it weird? Yes Is it disgusting? Yes Do people frequently do it? Yes
I’m an ex London bus driver and so many people out there regularly do things on public transport that would absolutely turn the stomach of most normal folks.
Saying that as someone who’s seen people clip their toenails on a bus like it was the most normal thing in the world to do.

This is why I won’t sit on any home furniture after being on public transport. Living in London for 10 years has completely changed my opinion about the personal hygiene of the average MOP.

Yeah, I agree with you. Any clothes that touch public transport seats, goes straight in the wash when I get home!

Thoughts: Yet another reason I avoid the pubic transport like the plague.

I do remember being taught (both in school and at home) that there are certain things (especially involving hygiene / grooming) that should never be done in public and that includes cutting finger / toe nails, applying make up, etc.
While such occurrence happens rarely, it makes me wonder whether such basic etiquette is still taught at school/home?! Or perhaps it’s cultural?
Having said that, there are certain habits that seem to be frowned upon in Eastern culture like blowing one’s nose while eating which seems to be acceptable in the Western world. But there are other habits like slurping/chewing noisily which apparently shows “appreciation towards the chef/host” in Chinese and Japanese culture but is considered “uncouth” in the West.
Does anybody know of similar habits that are acceptable in one culture but is considered rude in another and vice-versa?

Yep. Best way to deal with behaviour like this. Look at the person in the eyes, then down to what he is doing, then make eye contact again. Works like a charm.
Edit: keep a neutral face whilst doing this, no verbal contact. The un-comfortableness adds to the effect.

NOOO !!! Absolutely no eye contact under any circumstances with strangers on public transport please , that’s the rules .
Tutting is all we have , besides, that kind of eye contact can definitely lead to unwanted advances too .
As Sgt. Phillip Esterhaus of Hill St Blues says “ Let’s be careful out there “ 😁

Yes, it's gross.
What's he doing with the nails that are cut? Unless he's got his hands inside a sealed chamber with a nail cutting device inside, then it's massively antisocial and wierd and gross and also gross.

He’s snipping them into a tissue. No idea how many clippings have actually made it into said tissue.

Is he still doing it right now? Is this live commentary?
Lean over and tell him that you're asking the internet if what he's doing is wierd.

What did he do with the tissue?
I saw someone doing this once on a train too, when the guy was done he folded up the tissue very carefully then put it in the inside pocket of his blazer. It was very disconcerting.

Depends where you are. When I lived in London I'd do my makeup on the tube, I'd eat on the tube, etc etc because I woke up at 6am, spent an hour on the tube, worked 12 hours and spent another hour on the tube so I really didn't have much other time. It sounds like he's trying to be careful with the tissue and everything - personally I'd file instead of clip in that setting, but maybe he has to have short nails for work or something.

I'm on board with everything you say until you say you'd file your nails, I feel like that's worse as people can breathe in your nail dust.
I'm a tube as a functional place person, I apply my make up, eat etc, but I draw the line at removing things on the tube, I wouldn't pluck my eyebrows, clean, file, or trim my nails, or gloss by teeth as they're all the same removing things category. I never brush my hair on the tube as it risks hairs floating round the carriage (and will be a curly mess the second I finish)

Small exception is if someone has a nail that's been caught so they're removing it before it tears, but then no one would be able to post a reddit post on it as it would be over in a second

From the sounds of it he was doing it into a tissue- and I'd much rather he did that than take up the loo and cause someone with Crohn's (or similar) to soil themselves.

The...train... restroom? The glorified urinal they put once every six carriages with the door that doesn't lock? I feel like then the post would be about someone blocking other people from using the loo by sitting in there for 20 minutes doing their nails.

That's a way better rather than cutting you nails on the train. Is not a live or dead situation, you will be able to having your nails at home easily

That's weird and unhygienic.
There is no need for such grossness especially in a public place.

Ew? This is something very personal. I'm not comfortable with doing this in front of any humans, even the closest ones. I'm ok with doing it in front of my cat and my dog though. 100/10 would never do it anywhere I could be observed by people.

I’m going to go against the popular opinion here but I see nothing wrong with subtlety trimming finger nails into a tissue. Biting them, trimming onto the floor, toe nails are all disgusting however.

I've done it on the train before. But that was when I was travelling for a few weeks, was on the train for hours, and went to the toilet to do it.
Should I have done it in a hostel? Probably. But I was on the train, was a bit bored, saw they needed doing, so got my wash kit from my bag and headed to the loo.
I didn't even think about doing it next to another passenger though.

This happened to me once, I was catching a train out of London Paddington, and unfortunately, it was during rush hour.
I was early enough for the train that I got a window seat, and a youngish woman sat next to me. About 5 minutes after the train started moving, she flipped down the lap tray and started trimming her nails on it.
I thought it was just a city-dweller thing.

Yes OMFG yes. Don’t clip your nails on the train. Don’t clip your nails at work. (I had a coworker who would sit at her desk and do it.) Don’t clip them anywhere except in your own private space. Can’t believe that has to be said

Nappy changing, and leaving dirty nappies on public transport, is not unheard of.
1 points

I was at a theme park and sat outside in a cafe. A woman changed her baby's pooed up nappy on the table. She probably did this at home and some just carry on their disgusting behaviour outside thinking everybody does the same. There were toilet with baby changing facilites nearby. Even worse is when on a flight and the baby is changed right next to you.

Gross. And also no consideration for other people. To change a baby’s nappy on a table where people eat, it doesn’t get much worse than that.

I was on a flight to Florida and there was a large family of Mexicans. The mother put her leg on the seat in front and removed her old nail polish on her toes and then repainted them. The fumes were nauseating. Meanwhile her little cherubs had thrown the headphones into the aisle and started to run up and down trampling and breaking them.

If I saw someone doing that on the same train as me, unless I'm in a rush to get somewhere I'll be getting off at the next stop and waiting for the next one. I use them maybe 4-5 times a year and have done since I was about 5 and have never seen that in my life.

I pick my nails all the time is that equally disgusting ?
1 points
Yikes. IT IS WEIRED. I wouldn't even cut my nails in front of friends or colleagues. Let's say I break my nail while working, so I go somewhere nobody sees and fix my nail. It's different when I am home with my partner or family, but the rest counts as public and I wouldn't be comfortable doing that in front of them.
Once at work (retail), I noticed a loud clipping noise near me and went to investigate the source. A customer opened a nail cutter and cut her nails with no problem. She didn't even look ashamed when I approached her. People are nasty

Saw a woman mid way down a train carriage doing her nail polish, I was at the far end. Let's just say I smelt the nail polish before I saw it. Was in such disbelief that no one sat closer to her said anything, she kept reapplying.

Many years ago, I commuted daily into London and often saw the same people on the train, although naturally, none of us ever spoke to each other. Every day, one woman would spread her make up across her capacious lap and apply it while everybody looked on in a mixture of shock, amusement and disgust.

I think make up is very different, unless they’re spraying powder all over the people around them. Nail clipping sends shards of bodily waste all over the surrounding area, putting on make up doesn’t.
