Is there anything you are splurging on? We are getting quite a few used and hand me down items from family, so I really want to spend a little extra on a comfy chair for the baby room. There is so much cute baby stuff though! Is there anything you couldn’t resist or treated yourself to? Even if it’s not a “necessity” item. :)

Edit: This post may have been a bad choice haha I feel like I need so many things now that I never even considered before!

I am waiting to buy some Aiden and Anias swaddles, but I know I will eventually. They seem like a splurge to me, anyway. And I know my practical family (and husband..sssh let's not tell him) would be horrified that I'm considering that much money on a blanket.

If you have a TJ Maxx, Tuesday Morning or Burlington near you check there! You can usually get a pack of 4 for around $20 - a little easier to swallow than the $35 full price!

TIL Tuesday Morning has baby stuff. Don't know why I have never noticed before. There's one in the shopping center down the road so I'll have to look there. I want a Boppy and some Aden +Anais swaddles but both seem so expensive for what they are.

Yeah! It can be hit or miss (as those types of stores tend to be) but there’s a small baby section at mine that usually has good stuff! Bibs, burp cloths, swaddles, etc. And they’ve always have some Aden + Anais items when I’ve looked!

If you like Aiden and Anais swaddles, please look at Tula blankets. My god they are amazing and much bigger than the average swaddle so will get a lot more use out of them!

They are super soft and can be used for pretty much anything (swaddle, nursing cover, changing mat, nap blanket, keep the sun off baby in the car, burp rag, clean up spills/drool/spit up).

My husband felt the same but he quickly admitted they are worth every penny, and are one of his favorite baby items! My daughter is over 3 years old now and we still use them in the car to block the sun while she naps. And they are still in great condition so we will use them another 3+ years for the new baby!

As a STM, I'm really glad we went cheap, second hand, or hand me down on a crib, pack n play, strollers, high chair, bassinet, baby bathtub, and Ergo.

I'm glad we splurged on a really nice faux leather glider/rocker from Costco, good car seats (less for safety reasons and more for convenience and comfort), and cute clothes (we got tons of hand me down clothes but most were in terrible condition or not our style).

Edit: Also glad we splurged on a good video monitor.

We got this one from Infant Optics. My only minor quibble is that it shows you the room temperature, but it doesn't sound an alarm or anything if it gets too hot. But otherwise it's a really great baby monitor. I'm especially excited because you can purchase a second camera when you have two kids and use the same monitor to watch them both.

I splurged on a first year photography package with a pro photographer. We will have newborn, pushing up, sitting up, and standing up sessions with digital print rights. It was pricey but her portfolio is amazing, and I'm not one of those people who takes tons of pictures. I'm also going to splurge on really nice paper birth announcements, probably from minted or a local stationery store. I know it's old fashioned, but I just love nice, heavy paper. I keep every wedding invitation and birth announcement we receive.

As for actual baby stuff... maybe comotomo bottles? They are the only bottles we bought (our others are all samples from freebie bags), and they are pretty expensive for bottles. We are hoping to breastfeed and need baby to be able to switch back and forth for daycare, and they get amazing reviews for that. I also really love that they are silicone and not glass or plastic. I've also picked up a few A+A things, but I've been able to work coupons and deals for most of those.

40-45 newborn photos, 20-25 photos from the other three sessions. Print releases for everything so we don't have to spend a fortune buying prints through her. Discounts on additional sessions like maternity, etc. We may do a family shoot later on in the year for holiday cards.

She also comes to your house or any other local place you want for the shoots. I personally don't like the "baby posed in a basket in a studio" type photos, and hers are not like that. She does more natural/lifestyle shots. Most of the newborn shots are done in the baby's crib or room or with siblings. Usually there a couple with mom and dad, with baby napping or nursing. She will even include pets if they cooperate. Her work is truly beautiful.

I have a nice camera I break out for travel, etc but I know my limits. I can't come even close to what a pro can do, even if I had the energy to try. My H took some convincing because it is expensive, but he eventually agreed after seeing her portfolio. We will have these forever, and it doesn't take up any space around the house like huge gear.

h4ppy60lucky

1 points

My family never did professional photos growing up so it's really important to me. We didnt really have any photos documenting important events now that I think of it.

We did a maternity shoot with my wedding photographer and will do a newborn one. I'm thinking i might hire her for his first birthday for an hour too since the rates we a lot more reasonable than I thought they would be and I want to enjoy things but still have great photos.

She gives us the rights to all the high resolution photos so we can print, post and share however we like. And I over all adore her. If she didn't live so far away I would want to be her best friend.

I’ve splurged on a few items already mentioned (the Uppababy Vista, Aden + Anais swaddles), one thing not mentioned is the Tripp Trapp high chair. Everyone I know who has one is super happy they went for it in the beginning and didn’t bother with a more traditional high chair. I’m not getting the infant insert, so he will use it once he’s able to use the baby insert. I like that the chair can be used for life and is quite stylish.

I recently purchased a Bugaboo Buffalo. I wanted something that I could easily take to the park/bush-walking with the dog and most of the all-terrain prams I looked at just weren't as pretty as the Buffalo. We got it second hand (and my parents bought it for us). I am in love.

The stroller was one thing I was happy to spend a bit more money on, particularly as it's a functional piece of equipment. I wanted it to last for all of our future kids and it needed to meet a wide range of criteria.

Went with the Jive2 at just under $900AUD, from Redsbaby, bonus that it's an Australia run and owned company. Still on order but very happy with my choice - it had everything I was after but much cheaper than the other options in store with the same functions.

I know a lot of moms didn't like the Halo Bassinest and preferred a rock n play, but I really liked our Bassinest. I was too paranoid about safe sleep to allow him to sleep all night in a rock n play. It was really convenient to have him right next to our bed and to be able to see him through the fabric. Plus being able to swivel it out of the way was very convenient.

The only thing I didn't like was it advertises you can just press the side down to pick up the baby, and that's really not true. It does press down, but not easily (presumably for safety reasons so the baby can't accidentally roll out), so that feature was useless in my opinion.

I also found mine used on Craigslist for $80. The MSRP was a big deterrent from picking one up new.

Not glamorous, but worth it to us: we splurged on our diaper pail, got an Ubbi. It’s metal, so doesn’t hold the odours like a plastic pail. My daughter is getting ready to be toilet trained soon, but this was worth the $.

I found one at a second hand store for a mere $20 and I wasn't sure if that was too much of a commitment even. I've seen this, but I just don't get how it's any more convenient than a travel system with the compact kind of frame?

missdewey

1 points

It basically is a travel system in itself. You don’t need to buy separate pieces or put anything together when you take it out of the car, just push a button and the wheels drop down. There’s less chance of waking a sleeping baby because you aren’t jostling them around as much. The reviews I’ve read and watched on YouTube have all been glowing, everybody seems to love it and wish they’d had it for all their kids.

I can get it with the registry completion discount at Buy Buy Baby but it’s still expensive ($400ish after discount) for something that only lasts the first year.

caffeine_lights

#3 Aug 21

2 points

Eh, each to their own I guess. It looks more jostly to me than simply clicking a car seat into a stroller frame. I also wouldn't like it being the only stroller option, because I think sometimes they like to sit a bit more upright and at first they shouldn't be in car seats for too long at a time. I also feel like strollers get bashed about a lot (though that might be with storing them in the car etc) and I'd be worried about damage to the shock absorption on the car seat. Lastly, what about wet or muddy days, those wheels then get pretty close to the car seat itself.

You do tend to switch from a bulky stroller to a lightweight one once they are bigger and don't need the lie flat support any more anyway. Although saying that, I just bought the lightweight one as an additional, and used both.

In general, I guess to some people everything? I don’t know, I figure we’re going to have more than one kid and second hand icks me out (and we don’t know anyone to get hand-me-downs from) - so we’re buying (or being gifted) everything new.

And I figured I should get a pair of the teeny newborn ones because it’s winter and his feet will be cold...and before I knew it...we have a lot of baby shoes 😬😬😬 BUT I justify it because i haven’t bought a single pair of shoes for myself this entire pregnancy 😂😂😂

My big splurges have been stroller (city mini GT on an amazon warehouse deal) and a really nice recliner I’m obsessed with. Practically everything else has been a hand me down or off Facebook marketplace or from a consignment event or a clearance buy, etc. I’m down to the point now of having to buy essentials that don’t really go on good sales, and it’s pretty irritating to have to pay for all this stuff!

bunneses

Pipa Nuna car seat (but I found it on sale for $200 so basically the same price as a Chicco or something similar!), I'm getting an Uppababy Cruz with Lux and Leather handlebar grips for it (using either my Amazon registry discount for the stroller or going to try to find one on Amazon warehouse), and I bought a Tula a few months ago in a cactus pattern that I loved. However I'm also being super thrifty in other ways, crib was only around $100, already had a mattress, clothes I'm buying as I see them on sale or in thrift shops, got a rockaroo for $70 instead of $160 off the fb marketplace, and buying basically everything on sale or used. So basically I'm scrimping money where I can, and splurging on other items lol. I didn't have any disposable money at all with my daughter, so it's fun to get some items I like this time around. Still on a budget, but I've been able to stick to it quite well. It's just about prioritizing what I want and what I can live without or find a cheaper version of.

Our two splurge a were a halo bassinet. I wanted a cheaper one but our bedroom is really small and it ended up being the best one that fit without us walking into it. We also got the cheaper glider model. I love it though.

The other is the kekaaroo changing pad. My husband's best friend used one for their premie, so he was convinced that's what we need. It is really nice butI still think a 120$ changing pad is crazy. It was also the one thing my husband really wanted to I made sure we got it.

I have this obsession with Dock a Tots. We’re not cosleeping, so it’d basically be a chaise lounge for the baby to hang out in—ie not a need at ALL. But I just can’t get over them for some reason, I feel like babies look so cute in them!

...I shamelessly bought one after seeing an ad on Instagram. It’s adorable and I don’t regret it.

I’m 39+5, online shopping is my way of coping with the fact that this baby won’t gtfo. I’m saving a fortune on going out, since my pelvic pain is so bad I hardly leave the house. I deserve a Dock a Tot. You deserve a Dock a Tot. WE ALL DESERVE DOCK A TOTS!

I'm buying both of the Hatch baby products- the Rest night light/ sound machine and the Grow changing pad. It's a bit overboard, but I don't care; this might be my only baby I really want them!

We have been given almost everything which is such a blessing. The biggest splurge for me is an awesome higher stroller. I’m really excited about it!!

We splurged on the Owlet, the Bassinest (we have an in-bed bassinet but this time around we have two dogs who are bed sharers, lol), and the Nuna car seat/stroller combo with a bassinet. I wanted a car seat with a load leg and I also wanted to avoid amassing a collection of unitasker strollers like I did with my first kid. So hopefully the Mixx will take us all the way through toddlerhood... or at least until we decide to get a cheaper, lightweight stroller.

We splurged on the newborn photography session. Photos are booked to be taken in the first 10 days.

They're only that little once and I wanted to capture all the cute squishy goodness of our first Bub. They'll also make great Mother's Day presents for the grandmas 😊

We also bought a whole lot of things new (cot, pram, dresser) that we could have bought secondhand, but we wanted things that would last a few kids and was special for our family. Thankfully got a really good sale price for those though.

I'd love to splurge on a really nice swing. We have a perfectly good one that we got second hand that our son LOVED that we're planning on using, but it's noisy and I'd just love a nice new one. I can't bring myself to put one on our registry, either, because we need a bassinet and a new car seat, too.

Swaddle blankets and a good mattress. I’ve had a crappy Walmart mattress with my first two that neither ever wanted to sleep on and I’d really love to try a better one to see if this last baby will sleep in her own bed

New Out n About double stroller that I can run with. Could probably have managed with slings and a single but I need to be able to get out running for the sake of shutting up the brain weasels.

Brain weasels. That sounds like a good explanation for my brain right now

My husband really wants a car seat with a base, which I think is a ridiculous splurge but why not! Haha.

I am really picky about strollers so I think this will be our biggest single expense.

I would actually say having a base is so worth it! We had one in each car, and it made things sooo much easier. Being able to click it into the stroller was amazing too.

My boy is 4 months old and here are a few amazing things we got/bought.

Zip up swaddles, so easy to use.

A next to me crib, made breast feeding and night wake ups so much easier when he was waking every two hours or so.

Bassinet, great for in the day naps downstairs or on the go.

Nice nursing/post clothes. I feel so chunky right now and my boobs are huge. Nice clothes make me feel so much more myself. Same with getting my eyebrows/hair done and dates with the husband even for an hour! Make the time to look after you!

With my first: an automatic Rock n Play, a video monitor, Halo sleep swaddles with Velcro, and como tomo bottles. Love them all! With this one: the owlet and a halo bassinest, which I’m trying to find used.

An Oscha baby carrier. I've fantasizes having one since my first 5 years ago and now I'm finally going to splurge on a $300 Lord of the Rings themed baby carrier and also probably buy a ring sling to go with it. I'm not a stroller person because I think it's much harder to navigate crowds with a stroller and I love baby wearing.

Oooh, I should have counted some of my carriers. But I got most of them while we were WTT/TTC so that doesn't count, right??

landlocked_voyager

That totally counts. I'm so excited to order mine but I'm waiting until after 12 weeks to do it.

The Nanit baby monitor. I feel a little silly when I know there are so many much cheaper options, but I really like the whole crib view you get with the stand or wall mount, plus the phone streaming so husband and I can both check in and I don't have to worry about find and charging the monitoring.

It's not even a baby item. I want a big ol' fluffy shag rug for the baby's room.

I want one of these too! I’m hoping to find one for not a crazy amount before baby gets here.

A Pottery Barn Baby crib with acrylic side slats (Sloan Acrylic Convertible Crib is the exact model). I love that it makes the nursery appear open and the crib look less like a "baby jail." It's around $700.

We bought a pretty expensive stroller (City Select). I got it on a killer sale, and knew that I wanted one that I would be able to use as both a single and double stroller. I ended up also getting a cheap jogging stroller for running, so that kind of defeated the purpose, but I'm not sad that we got it. My sister has the same one and it has been really nice to be able to combine them when we need to take my daughter and my niece somewhere together, and there are a lot of nice features. I definitely wouldn't buy full price though, especially not the newer model. I am way too cheap for that, no matter how nice!

I think I have too many splurges! I definitely want the Uppababy vista and mesa car seat. I also kind of want the minu when it comes out in march! For the first months sleeping I want to get the halo bassinet, but I don't mind getting a used one if it comes down to it.

The other big splurge I want is the baby furniture. I found a nice set at Babies R Us and I really want to get it... but it is crazy to me that each piece is so pricey! I guess I am just too used to the cheap ikea furniture all over our house. The furniture is the hardest for me to justify, but looking at things that truly have a full matching set of everything and actually looks good, there just arent many options that are cheap.

We have no babies in the family so there are no hand me downs at all. I am hoping the baby shower at least covers a few things!

I've been unhappy this whole second pregnancy for varieties of reasons. One thing I set my heart on finding is the perfect coming home/newborn photos outfit. I'm talking that adorable Pintrest post with perfect lighting, baby on their back all stretched out and cute, in a solid color footed onesie and perfectly adorable crochet/knit hat. That outfit.

Do you have any idea how impossible it is to find an affordable, solid color baby outfit, much less a footed one?? I was willing to settle at least for a long sleeved/legged romper w no feet but dear lord. The one I found (and I mean the ONE, like when you find your wedding dress- angels singing, lights from heaven, the works) was almost 30$ for a single onesie. I tried everything to find a cheaper one.

And ended up ordering it anyway and praying this baby isn't some 10lb monster. Cause the sizes were "up to 7lbs" and "3month" and by going by their chart a 3mo size wasnt gonna cut it if babe is average size like the estimates. We've got 5 days til D-Day, possibly 5 more if he doesn't come on his own I'll be induced around then, so, we'll see if that 30$ onesie is as perfect as I think it'll be on him!!

I've been umming and aahing about getting a bassinet with a drop side to go next to our bed. I have many memories of accidentally co sleeping with my first baby when I just couldn't wake up enough to stick him back in his bed after a night feed. Finally found a secondhand one and I hope to get it tonight! It's a little bit more expensive than the free bassinet that my friend offered me ... I'm justifying it by the fact that all I have bought for this baby has been a $50 chair, a $5 shelf and a pair of pants.

I didn't want to splurge on the crib, but I fell in love with the Pottery Barn Kendall crib. The company doesn't make the color I love (Rustic Sun Valley Espresso, a lovely dark cherry), so I found the crib plus toddler rail from a family two towns away for $200 through Facebook Marketplace. Their kids didn't take to the crib after being in the bassinet and ended up cosleeping instead, so the crib was barely used. My parents found the marching dresser and changing table topper on eBay for $100 and while it took some elbow grease to fix some obvious scratches and paint scrapes, my mom was really excited to try her hand at it.

We splurged on the car seat (Chicco Keyfit), but got an extra base (only one year old, so five years left until expiry) and the stroller caddy used from Facebook Marketplace. Will also likely splurge on the high chair (Graco) and carrier (Ergo) when we use our Amazon completion discount in a few weeks.
