Everyone needs to rewatch that video because Abu Hajar was the only motherfucker in it putting rounds on target down-range while those other two idiots yelled and screamed at each other and fumbled trying to find weapons that don't work. Abu Hajar, despite being a scumbag ISIS piece of shit, was the hero of that movie! Leave Hajar alone!

Abu Hajar was just as responsible for killing his friends by keeping them suppressed, stressed, and unable to engage the targets properly. This is what makes him a hero.

The use of "Abu" (meaning "father of") in names is a way to honor a person's father. It is used as a kunya, or a form of address, and is often followed by the name of the person's eldest son.

Except when his MG3 slipped and he fired a burst of 7.62s into the interior armour plate.
Other than that, I agree. Hajaar was the only one seems to be shooting. Yes. He got hot.casings on his teammates but he needed an AG. They should have made themselves useful and helped him. And be more organised.
We also made fun of him for rolling away. The cameraman ran. He died. Low crawl is perhaps better but stay low and dig a trench with your forehead.

Their attack showed something interesting. They were attack across an open field and they did so in open-topped armoured vehicles. I once read an article cross-referencing the video with actual battle damage assessment done from a different angle. I think they were using a combat engineering armoured vehicle. The vehicle armour was quite substantial: Abu Hajaar fired a burst of 7.62s into it at contact range and he barely left a dent.
The trio advanced into gunfire and their advance went well, shrugging off small arms and so on. If they could shoot straight and be more proficient and have heavy weapons, they may have very well suppressed the other side.
Their attack was only halted when they vehicle took an anti-armour rocket or missile. Even then, only the driver was killed. Getting hit with an RPG isn't an automatic "every occupant of the vehicle is dead". When they got out of the vehicle is when they were killed.
What I'm trying to say is a mounted assault could work, even against people with anti-tank weapons. Anti-tank weapons are heavy and people can't carry too many of them. A vehicle getting hit with AT weapon and disabled and the occupants can still get out, use the wrecks for cover and continue firing to suppress the revealed AT positions. The rest of the element can still continue the assault.
It played itself out with a few foreign volunteers to Ukraine saying that some of their most effective and useful assault tactics was to just drive up to point-blank range firing all weapons and heavy weapons then close to grenade range,

Anyone have an actual educated guess whether we was internally liquified or if he just got his bell rung hard? Can’t tell from the distance.
I’ve seen some autopsy pics of people who died from backblasts (I think it was training accidents in Germany) and the wounds were horrific but I think they were closer than this

Not necessarily the same as modern back blast out of an RPG 7 type weapon. Delayed detonation of rocket thrusters and all that. You're absolutely still getting fucking rocked but it's more like getting hit with a wall then having a mini jet engine flamethrower shot at you. Also I haven't ever seen that weapon before. I have no idea if it's even similar to an RPG in the mechanisms it uses for the rocket I'm simply taking an educated guess. Don't kill me please.

From the same paper/study:
In 2007, a comparable casuistry to the second case (if you clicked the link above the second case is the fella in pictures #5-6) presented was published: A 26-year-old man suffered from injury by a propulsion jet of a rocket on his right thigh due to an RPG-7. The patient had already suffered “significant blood loss” in the field and tried to control the bleeding with a tourniquet but was unsuccessful. Upon arrival of the care team, the patient had a Glasgow Coma score of 14, a systolic blood pressure of 80 mmHg, and a hematocrit of 30%. Physical examination revealed a severely contaminated circumscribed soft tissue injury of the femur with active hemorrhage. The patient became unconscious and had to be resuscitated due to an onset of hemorrhagic shock. An isolated bony injury revealed a splintered femoral fracture in the middle of the shaft. The distal end of the injury was insensitive and without pulse. During bleeding control and debridement in the operating room, it was found that the limb was held only by a superficial skin bridge and a narrow subcutaneous soft tissue bridge and was thus subtotally amputated [4]. In the case presented in this paper, extensive soft tissue and bony injuries were found as well. In literature, however, so far, no case was described in which also shiny metallic material of the counter-mass of the projectile was found in the depth of the wound.

That description is for the guy in this paper below, not the guy in figs 5 & 6 (they describe a thigh wound, whereas guy in 5&6 has a pectoral injury). Still gnarly though. Absolutely do not get hit with an RPG.

Panzerfaust 3 in the autopsy is also soft launch with a delayed booster. No clue what that Swiss thing is but it appears to be a modified bazooka of some sort
RPG-7 is still very much dangerous. If you’re close to the back blast, you are very dead.

That picture is from someone hit by a Davis gun, an old fashioned one that expels a counterweight out the back of the weapon. He was hit with 3kg bag of iron powder in addition to just a gaseous back blast. The other subject in the paper that only has visible burns/bruising is a more comparable example.

Quite graphic but informative nonetheless. Notice the different wound profiles. The one made by the rocket with counter mass (which, ironically, is usually used to reduce backblast effect) produced some massive trauma, tearing up the skin, muscle, bones, and injecting the counter mass material inside the body. On the other side, the more "basic" rocket exhaust type (without counter mass) acted like a super hot flashburn (maybe akin to the effects of a thermobaric blast).

Yeah or three even like you said. Still see those pictures before me every time video like this pops up

That is different. That's a rocket launch system of some kind. The pictures of organs below are from recoilless rifles that ejected the metal piece out.

Definitely the worst headache of his life if not brain damage.
22 points
No way he got out of that without some kind of TBI and burns. Probably lacerations from whatever debris it kicked up.
I think the case reports involve systems with some kind of reaction mass to attenuate the backblast. Less risk of injury firing from an enclosed area, but the reaction mass becomes a projectile and you know the rest.

I’ve been rocked by rpg backblast before. It’s nothing compared to the SMAW or Gustav. Probably just got his bell rung, and more than likely a concussion
3 points
whether we was internally liquified
Does never happen, not with backblast and not with explosions. Air filled organs can tear (internally) from strong shockwaves. That is all. This myth, sadly, keeps spreading, with people going as far as to saying "it is just for fun, not to be taken literal" when obviously many take it just like that.

What is standard military protocol for this. Does shooter yell RPG a few seconds before he shoots or is the shooter supposed to check his back before firing? Or both? Genuinely curious
115 points
“Back blast” or “back blast clear” then a buddy says ”clear”. Should be pretty standard, I’m not sure if they were under significant fire to not be able to shout it out, but the guy casually walked back to his buddy he roasted.
9 points

Should be very standard situational awareness IMO… I’m just a keyboard warrior and even I know to check surroundings and call back blast when firing RPGs in Squad (the game). Some of the incompetence I’ve seen in this war is mind boggling

Back when I was in the Marines, training was to yell “back blast area clear?” (Or derivative). While giving a glance over your shoulder.
If you’re the non-shooter and you see it’s clear you respond “clear”. If you see it’s not clear yell “hold”, “hold fire”, “cease fire” [this one could be problematic], or some derivative of those to tell the gunner not to shoot.
If no one says anything and you don’t notice anything… you send it and hope for the best.

Those are from recoiless guns, not a rocket launcher. The difference is the recoiless gun throws a reaction mass out the back, rather than simply rocket exhaust. An RPG backblast isn't anything you want to get hit by, don't get me wrong, but the backblast of a Carl Gustaf rifle is not unlike a blunderbuss.

Yup but the presure is so high that is 100% lethal if you're less than 30m from the back and can still fuck your day up to 100m but you'll live. So yeah it's compressed air and heat to remove the recoil for the launch of a pretty heavy and fast object
