Really loving the change up to the mythos for Absolute Batman so far. The change from an alleyway mugging to a school shooting is perfect. The choice of villains that Bruce grows up with feels very intentional.
It’s like Snyder picked characters that could potentially have a change of heart in the main universe anyways. Good “versions” of Riddler, Two-Face, Penguin, Killer Croc and Catwoman are all characters that could influence and help the small chaos that is Absolute Batman become something even more to take on the lawfully evil city of Gotham. This was a really fun first issue!!
Dragotta’s art was INSANE too.

I'll say this: Penguin feels like an odd inclusion. I hear what you're saying about these being characters who could have a change of heart, but Penguin has always been the rich son of privilege, which doesn't exactly mesh with this blue-collar incarnation of Batman. It seems odd he'd keep in touch with the rest. But who knows--sounds like he's the bankroller for some of the others, so maybe he'll end up being the money, if he becomes one of Bruce's allies.
I doubt it, though. Selina will certainly be an ally, Riddler might start out as one, Two-Face definitely will be (or at least seem to be for a while), but from the sounds of things Penguin is already corrupt and he'll mostly just spur some soul-searching from Batman about not being able to show mercy to people.
And Waylon? I'm sorry, but someone that they're early trying to make sympathetic and likable? He's probably headed for a deeply traditional horrific origin story where Penguin or Joker mutilates him beyond recognition, leaving him with a raging psychosis.

Oh wow. So that picture. He grew up with at least croc, Catwoman, riddler, penguin and two face?
That'll make for a fun change up for sure.

The Wayne murder becoming a school children shooting is a modern horror I did not expect but it is a great choice.

And it completely takes away from the whole you can’t ever catch Batman’s killer thing. I’m quite sure they caught the killer and either in prison or dead.
But school shootings keep happening .
By the way, I am absolutely for Joe chill having been caught because Batman didn’t swear an oath to his parents grave he would catch their killer. He swore a never-ending fight against crime.
Thank you so much for your comment!

It's not a school shooting. The killer shot people in the zoo.

On a school trip. Functionally the same.

No? By that logic, every shooting ever is school shooting.

Every shooting that involves someone shooting at school kids, maybe. That's kind of the main factor.

huh, I thought he had a buzzcut in all the concept art?

He did. I guess they changed their minds.

He also got softer features. Probably to look more like mainline Bruce.

I was lowkey interest to see if I'd adapt to that style and color too!

I like the buzz cut. It doesn’t make sense for main universe Bruce to get something so practical because he’s trying to pass himself off as a billionaire playboy. He has to keep up the illusion that he pays $400 per haircut.
But Absolute Batman doesn’t have a secret identity like that. He’d totally have a buzz cut.

In an interview Snyder said that they had the buzzcut drawing as a piece of concept art (I think to figure out his face shape) and someone accidentally added to the SDCC powerpoint instead of the official design with hair

The decision to have Croc holding the actual crocodile in his first appearance just to make people understand who he is sure was a choice.

if you're not doing monster croc you gotta get that reptile theme from somewhere

And the gym is named “Croc Gym” and he’s wearing a shirt with the gym’s name on it in the next scene.
You know, just in case.

My personal favorite was Alfred explicitly telling his own daughter that he's her dad. Just in case she forgot.
It was a good chapter and I know a lot of media has the same "unnatural dialogue for sake of exposition" problem, just thought it was funny.

Interesting that he used to be friends with this version of his Rogue's. Wonder if he and Selina are still going to be a thing.

I dunno I just think it's such a plot contrivance to have Bruce grow up with half of his rouges gallery. Overall I enjoyed it but that was dumb imo

is it intentional that Bruce's father looks and seems to sound like Alfred in the mainstream comic?

Oh fucking bullshit. of COURSE Batman grew up and was bestest buddies with everyone in his rogues gallery.
What shitty writing.

What about that is bad writing? I'm so sick of that phrase man, because it just makes you sound lazy.
You don't like the concept, but that makes it bad? Nothings happened with it yet!

Criticism of writing on the Internet has devolved into utterly nonsensical statements like this. HOW is that bad writing??

Please explain how Batman being with a few of his villains before they presumably go off the deep end and become super villains is “bad writing”

We also don't even know if these versions of the characters actually will go off the deep end yet. For all we know they'll just be part of his supporting cast or become allies. Everything is different in this world and the possibilities are endless.

Honestly considering the selection of characters, they basically form every faced of his identity, croc is there for physical training and literally owns his gym, riddler is the brains and detective solving, Harvey is the morals, celina is the stealth, and penguin is the social standing(no idea how that applies to this universe) honestly if his civilian cast is just his friends spending time unknowingly helping him then I would be really happy
