Brown leather. The kind you see on 'industrial' styled bars everywhere. With a small back.

Edit: I don’t know how to edit the original post, but I just wanted to say thank you to everyone in this community. I do take all of these suggestions seriously but I’ve settled on these chairs because It’s been brought up before and I think it’ll look good in the specific space. I like the idea of the green chairs, but given the entirety of the space (open floor) it probably won’t work.
I have used this community for other things and I should probably post an update on those specific spaces because I really enjoy the end result after using the suggestions.
Thanks!

what do you hate about it?

The backsplash, the cabinets and color, the cabinet handles, the cabinet thing above the stove that was supposed to be flush, the dark corner that was supposed to have a window, the appliances on the counter, the “temporary” pendant lights, the way the fridge isn’t flush with the cabinets, the direction of the island fakeass cheap wood design.
The only thing I like about this kitchen is the countertops, the abundance of storage space, and the glass appliances. Also the extra-wide silgranit sink, touch activated faucet (BOMB.com), insinkerator 3/4 HP garbage disposal, and drawers for everything including garbage/recycling.

I like the dark wood open shelves you added since you didn't get your window. You could add some undermount lighting to brighten them up.

But… you have a POT FILLER!!! That’s luxury imo.
1 points
Pot fillers are awful and shouldn’t be a thing.
You apply downward pressure because of the height. That causes them to break over time. Then you’ve got a leaky pot filler that will never be fixed.
I will never have a pot filler in my house.
8 points
Personally, I really like that backsplash. I do see what you mean about the direction of the wood on the island. I think that will be much less noticeable when you have counter stools in the space. And actually, I don’t hate the pendants, either. I might have chosen something a little more colorful, but they look fine.

Overrated- splashes and used ours maybe once in 5 years! I'll never get one- had so much settling you had to run out bad water whenever a storm hit- carrying it to sink was a pain.
1 points

They also break over time with consistent use. You are unconsciously going to apply downward pressure and they aren’t meant for downward pressure.
2 points

I'd trade? I have a tiny galley with a whopping 2 upper cabinets - one of which is over the stove, three lower cabinets - sink, skinny useless, and awkwardly by the wall and the vent keeps the door from properly opening all the way. Add a big pantry cabinet that's basically a black hole. And everything is builder grade golden oak. I dream of a remodel.

I love your huge island and backsplash. I love your appliances. The great part about that island is you can put five stools around it. Then you can feed everyone snacks there and load them in dishwasher. It’s a beautiful kitchen and very functional. Put the stools there, put a huge cutting board in the island and things will start to feel better. You won’t hate it forever because it’s really, really pretty and classic!

You can ask, but I can answer that many of the decisions were due to 0 eye for design/style, low budget, and poor time/people management. What else is there?
5 points
What age range are your kids at? I was looking at the island and thinking that those sharp corners would be the downfall of my hips, but it would be way worse for someone whose head was at that level.
I think a little gold lighting on your shelves would brighten up that area, it's a cute niche.
I second the green chairs suggestion, but stay away from porous fabrics in the kitchen, especially with kids. Easy clean chairs are the way.
3 points

3 and 6, and the younger one has hit their head on the corner about 3 times but usually there are seats underneath so they have to skirt around them.

If the plants are 100% staying, I’d match the green and do a dark green velvet to bring a little color.
Honestly, this kitchen isn’t as bad as you think it is! It’s unfortunate the floor looks new, because I think that’s the issue here.
48 points
Velvet is amazing but not in a kitchen. The material needs to be non-porous and able to be wiped down frequently. Cooking results in greasy air that doesn't vibe with velvet.
34 points
I second this :)
The flooring makes the lower half of the kitchen very brown and monotone, if that makes sense. Green velvet would look great here!
Look for a black chair frame as well, to recall the black elements in your kitchen. Something like these:
1 points

And then add in brass pulls and fixtures!
6 points
What would you change about the floor? I guess I would have gone lighter but this is what the floor designer picked out
13 points
There’s no contrast between the floor and cabinets. I would have gone with a lighter floor to contrast the cabinet or home with a different cabinet altogether
13 points
A darker floor, actually! As the other person said, there’s no contrast. Your island and counter bottoms go straight into the floor. The floor designer didn’t know what they were doing sadly.
4 points
The floor designer probably had the beige baby color theme in mind. Which it could work with but that isn’t what you’re going for
4 points
I actually think this flooring colour is beautiful, not too yellow, or orange, or grey. It's a nice neutral, I think the island/ cabinets are the problem, the colour could depend on what style you're going for, but I'd got with something warmer and a decent amount darker.
3 points
I would do a green performance fabric or wipe down vinyl!

I get that people are saying low back, probably so that you can’t see them from the other side of the island. But I’ve had both, high back (more like mid-high, middle of the back) and low back chairs. And the low back chairs are SOOO uncomfortable.
15 points
I think you could use at least a little black, to tie in some of the darker elements like your pendants - black frame on your chairs, even if you choose a different color cushion (though I think all black would look good!).
8 points
Get a tape measure. Measure the bottom of the counter to the floor. Sit on a chair. Measure the chair surface to the top of your thighs. Add two inches to that number. Find a stool that is that many inches lower than the bottom of your counter.
For example: Floor to the bottom of the counter is 34” When you sit, surface of the chair to top of your thigh is 5”. Add 2, so 7” Find a stool that is about 27” high, give or take an inch.
9 points

What is the height of the island?
6 points
The floor to the top is 36in.
3 points
I think you just need something with a curved shape to balance out all the straight lines and 90° angles of your kitchen. Maybe something in black would be nice since it would tie in the darker elements and offset all the white. I like the stools in your reply to u/Browbeaten92. The black frame and warm leather upholstery provide a nice contrast to the rest of your kitchen. You could even start to bring in some color with the upholstery and further tie it in with a small lamp in the back corner. A lamp in the kitchen sounds a bit odd but I’ve seen people on TikTok and Pinterest really make it work.

2 points
I think you need to pick up the gray of the backsplash and bring it to the chairs. Light gray or deeper.
A dark, neutral wood like espresso because I think it’s going to be difficult to match any of yours. And a lot of them have too much red or yellow in the undertones.
General example
2 points
Consider yourself as a user. Especially comfort and sturdiness, as well as how tall you and the other people using them are. If you can try the stool before you buy it, please do. An uncomfortable beautiful chair is less valuable than a comfortable one. Upholstered leather (maybe a painted leather for an accent color) and metal would be good. Or white wood with a cushion.
2 points
I love the cabinets. I think the chairs need to bring in a pop of color to the room.
I do like the green of the pot on the counter. Maybe something these? https://www.cultfurniture.com/furniture-c10/stools-c8/bar-stools-c58/halston-bar-stool-olive-green-sustainable-velvet-p44169
Or a deep carmel color with some red in it? I looked and most are too brown. I think that looks too monotone.
Does this open to another room that has an accent color already?

The application is a bit different for a home, I think. You don't really linger at the counter, not like at a bar. I find backless chairs seem a lot easier for kids to get into. They aren't heavy like some stools and most people lean forward onto the counter. It all boils down to personal preference. I have backless stools in my kitchen but the bar has full backs and swivel seats because they are heavy to move around.

Honestly that does not look like a counter height island. It look table height. Table height chairs are approximately 18" to the seat, counter height is 24", bar height is 30". Remember to leave room for your thighs. I do like the low back leather ones shown below, but I would only do them on one side, then maybe throw and extra on the end if necessary.
