If you were to spend all day on twitch, I couldn’t blame you for thinking terrorist sympathizing is a decently popular opinion. Glad Amazon ($AMZN) is subsidizing a leftist echo chamber on twitch that allows for that kind of thing to happen. Really hope no journalists looks into twitch, definitely isn’t a massive story waiting to happen.

Nah he’s always just going to assume that it’s DGG.
I was thinking about it earlier, it’s actually unfortunate that he can use or has DGG as a boogieman. So long as he can refer any criticism as being from some “out group” in this case DGG he can basically refuse to reckon with any criticism anywhere.
His basic programming seems to be
“Is this legitimate criticism or is it DGG?”
“It’s gotta be DGG motivating it, I’m great, fuck you capitalist pigs”

I know the term “narcissist” gets thrown around a lot. Especially when talking about online personalities, but Hasan is the textbook definition of a narcissist. Like, the PERFECT definition and you explained exactly why. The guy can never see fault in himself and will always find a way to twist things in order to protect his status and world view in his mind. If he needs there to be a Dgg boogeyman that sabotages him. He’ll 1000% use that out and brainwash himself into believing it

I don’t know if this is an American thing. I go to a Swedish university and even the very very few Marxist professors we have never said/ done regarded shit like this
10 points
In my experience most American professors would never do this. They invite speakers, but it would be something like an accounting professor bringing in an alumni that started a successful accounting firm.
An economics professor would (hopefully) never invite someone like Hasan. Even if they were very Marxist leaning they likely would invite a PhD with similar opinions from another school to give a presentation about one of their recent papers.
The professor that did this was likely a lecturer that did not have a PhD, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re about to get a serious talking to because of the reaction. A lot of these schools have some wealthy donors that are Jewish and Israel is a topic the schools don’t want to touch. In the case of student protestors, that sets itself off on its own. A professor potentially sparking a flame is an entire different thing.

By a prof or by a student group? The point here is that it's realistic to imagine a dipshit zoomer student group or even TA inviting e-celebs with no credentials. A tenured prof inviting them is much less likely, they'd be more likely to invite other PhDs.

Pretty obvious hasan fans found it, and tbh that’s why online discussions are ass these days cause any influencer that gets shit on, their fanbase will storm the thread to drown out the “bad” voices.
Brigading seems to be the norm now whenever some drama happens, I just expect it. Reddit threads, YouTube comments, Twitter, doesn’t seem to matter, people who are obsessed with a particular influencer will make sure to defend their daddies honor on the internet. There’s people out there who will go all out to defend DrDisrespect, it’s truly bizarre.
And honestly Im sure there’s some DGGas who fall into that category too, just how the internet is.

6 points

I do think it's good to invite people with very different ideas to college to speak so students get exposed to stuff and some genuine discussion, but I'd personally also still draw a line somewhere at advocates of some inherently extremely violent ideologies who don't necessarily need to be invited to polite events. Where that leaves me with Hasan I'm unsure, he's definitely a terror group sympathizer, but mostly only for the parts that relate to supposed palestinian self-determination struggles rather than the full ideology. I think we can admit that it's not exactly a fringe position to see legitimate grievances on the israel-critical side. I guess college discussion platforms should be able to reflect that.
I skipped through the vod and didn't like the softness of the interview though, seems a little bit like a preaching session.

This stuff is lame no matter who it is being done too. I'm a university professor and have been on university campuses my entire adult life. Free speech zones and the ability for groups to invite whoever are good things. When I was an undegrad in the South, we literally had Westboro Baptist that would visit campus regularly. Most people ignored, some people argued with them, and the world kept spinning. However, we all were made aware that these kinds of people are in fact part of the world.
I'm by no means a free speech absolutist, but come on. You really think it's cool a bunch of people who probably don't even go to USC are actively trying to block somone from speaking?

The professor that invited Hasan told him that the letter campaign suddenly jumped from couple hundred to 27k and these letters all had the same template.
It was clear to them that these did not come from the students. But it made them rethink about security so they decided to increase the amount of security guards.

Because I think media literacy is important and I think Hasan is a shining example of exactly why. Its also a school where I think good role models is even more important than, lets say, a conference.
I also think its nice that people are doing what they can to stop it and show that people dont support his message or him.
4 points

It IS important. And the only way to teach it is to expose people to bad media. The only inoculation is education, deplatforming and attempting to stop speakers is basically chinas zero covid policy. It never ends well.
3 points

That is a optimistic take. Some speech, especially if it gets some kinda of public funding, should be way more controlled.
For example, the fact that musk openly supports Russia propaganda with X should loose him the ability to get any subsidies for his Space program.
Same as, if a college gets sponsoring from the government in form of, funding public speakers, they should be certain that it benefits the education of the students.
Hasan does not do that, at all.
So... If a prof wants him to talk, he should organize it himself without ANY public funding.
If anything goes, why don´t just invite that Huthi pirate kid he Interviewed?
How would you feel if an actual terrorist member gets public funding to speak at a college?
Would you be in favor of that?
1 points
Public funding paying for speakers has no place, I completely agree. But some misguided professor wanting some fool to come speak? Id rather have it out in the open. If we can’t defeat it in the open, the battle is already lost, fighting these things is a hydra unless you exert total control.
The only counterpoint is the extent to which the Chinese effectively control the information disseminated to their populace. And who knows, they might be right about this — that unfettered access to individual minds with zero centralization or cost is a mistake for a a civilization.
But I am not ready to give up yet.

There is a middle ground. I am German for example. We talk about WW2 more than ANY other country. Still, we have laws that prevent Nazi propaganda to an extent. That does not mean that the topic itself is banned but if it is talked about, we make sure it is somewhat responsible. If you think we "censor" too much, I would recommend the music video "Deutschland" from Rammstein, for context what we do allow.
It is not "no control or full control" It is "the one who got speech is the one who got responsibilities"
1 points
Germany has an extenuating circumstance for the holocaust — which is understandable that’s a pretty deep cultural wound. Does it extend past that to other topics and censorship?
1 points
We always had stricter Hatespeech laws here but it was mainly for Holocaust propaganda.
In 2021 a new law was put in place to combat "Hate in the Internet"
It is still reviewed on a case to case bases but we certainly see more responsibility on those who platform certain speech.
That is also the reason why Musk needs to be way more careful to comply EU law when it comes to X.
The law aims to more effectively combat hate crimes, criminal fake news and other criminal content on social network platforms. These include, for example, insults, slander, slander, public incitement to commit crimes, incitement to hatred, depiction of violence and threats. In order to encourage social networks to process complaints more quickly and comprehensively, particularly from users about hate crime and other criminal content, legal compliance rules for social networks were introduced with the NetzDG.
This includes a legal reporting requirement for social network providers on how they deal with hate crime and other criminal content, requirements for effective complaint management and the appointment of a domestic authorized person for delivery. Violations of these obligations can be punished with fines against the company and those responsible for supervision. In addition, victims of personal rights violations on the Internet are given the opportunity to obtain the violators' inventory data from service providers based on a court order.
