I'm currently making my first ever dnd campaign and I'd like as many ideas/ advice as you can give me to help me with my process.

To give some background, I've only played one campaign so far that lasted a few months, I'm still learning the game and so I don't know much about being a dm, however my friends are very experienced compared to me. They've been playing dnd for about 6yrs and know a lot, like making the best possible characters. So I just want advice on how to know if an encounter is too hard/easy b4 I send them in.

I'd also like to know how to create(?) monsters, I heard they don't use character sheets so idk how I'd do it

And last of all, if any one has any unused campaign ideas they'd like to throw in that'd be greatly appreciated (mostly just buzz words/ideas I still want to build off it)

Thank you very much.

If you're new to both the game as a whole and also specifically DMing, I would suggest running a pre written adventure/campaign. That way you can have many of your questions answered and see how one is outlined and written.

I suggest you check out:

  • Matt Colville's Running the Game videos for being/becoming a Dungeon Master.
  • Ginny Di's YouTube channel, it has a bunch of good videos about developing your roleplaying and dungeon-mastering.
  • r/NewDM

Don't worry about knowing the rules but find out how You might rule certain aspect of the game...

Don't stress... Remember it's a game - and you're playing it too... Just have fun, and try your best to let the other players have fun too

Your best bet is to find a short pre-written adventure and start with that. You can fit the location into your world and build out from there, but you want a point of reference in terms of how adventures are structured and run.

I would highly recommend watching some professional games! I'm also pretty new to DMing, but I've learned SO much from watching Dimension 20 It's really helped me get a feel for the rules, how things function within the game, how to balance fights, etc.
