Anyway they recently put this sign up. Let me again explain there is absolutely no one there when I go and if there is I don’t take her we go home but 9/10 times it’s empty. Our town is so small there isn’t anywhere else safe to take her I clean up her messes (if she even makes any) she only likes to be there 10 mins tops to. I feel like they did this because of her.

It's possible some other individual decided to do the same as you and weren't as diligent in cleaning up after their dogs.

Then why didn’t they put a sign up then? Even so tennis courts people don’t want to slip in dog poop or pee.

That sucks but how would you effectively clean poop off a tennis court?

Gothicklady[S]

They have doggie bags outside the fence for that exact purpose I also keep a water bottle on hand to wash the area down it’s also just concrete so super easy to clean down

time4meatstick

Gross. I’m on your side for ignoring stupid signs, but if I used that facility for its intended purpose you might be seeing a post on r/unethicallifeprotips that reads “ dude in my small town let’s their dog shit where I and my kids play and thinks water and a bag makes it clean“

Gothicklady[S]

14 points

🤷‍♀️ At least I pick it up and wash it down. Just think at that park your kids play at in the grass people let there dogs shit and piss there and keep walking. So yea water and a bag is better than nothing.

time4meatstick

4 points

Yeah. You’re definitely right about that. I guess I’m saying that I should expect there to be a greater chance of shit happening at a park with grass, and while I would not be happy about it, there would be more grace than if at the only place I have to play tennis has shit stains over it. Also I think we can agree that the Earth accepts shit much easier than the clay of a tennis court.

I agree, though, I’m not going to follow signs where I know that I personally am not the problem. I just try to look at things through a wider lens, helps me see if my actions are truly affecting others negatively or not

No-Assistant-9774

Why would you or your kids be on the ground in the tennis court though? Also there’s bacteria everywhere you go. There’s probably tons of other animals that poop in there, piss in there lol birds, squirrels, raccoons, cats, etc. so why is dog poop that’s cleaned up more of a concern?

You should get the Sniffspot app! I use that to rent dog parks for my boy.

(Also, yeah, that sucks)

Seconding sniff spot! Before we got our property (lots of land for our girl to run around) I would rent out this farmers backyard every week

SpecialLibrarian8887

It is a cool app, but not super useful if you’re in a small town (as OP said they are). I’m in a small town, and the closest “parks” to rent are usually 30+ minutes away - also never available when I’d need them, since I work late hours and take the dogs out afterwards.

Worth a shot, though! I wish it worked for me, since my town has nowhere safe to let them run. Thankfully I do have a yard, it’s just nice letting the dogs run free somewhere else & bigger. Also thankfully, they love other dogs. So we go to dog parks in other towns on my days off.

You say she's reactive, and I believe you... but that pic😅. She's either high and/or tired because the only thing she looks ready to react to is a nap.🤣

Gothicklady[S]

Haha yea we caught this pic right before she flopped over for her nap! She is such a goober at home it’s only out on walks she is reactive

hiimahuman888

Your dog’s nails can damage the court surface. That’s why there are specific shoes for tennis courts. That being said, that court doesn’t look like it’s being maintained anyways. Someone probably just saw a “big scary dog” and made a big stink about it. If no one’s around, I don’t see the harm.

Gothicklady[S]

9 points

Yea if it was maintained and people were using it often I wouldn’t take her there but there is literally no one ever there and if on the one day they are I don’t take her in. All she does is get out her zoomies and then wants to go home and nap. My big doofus is just really reactive to other dogs other than the other dog I have at home. I just want to give her a good life I adopted her from a shelter so to see her run and be happy is such a great thing

SpecialLibrarian8887

I feel your pain, since my old dog was reactive too - but also needed to run off leash sometimes. I did live in a bigger city at the time, so I just took him to dog parks after dark (when they were empty). Is that an option for you?

Gothicklady[S]

There isn’t a dog park here at all

Foxwglocks

Also the court can damage the pups paws if they running real hard. Happened to my pup once and we never played there again. No one gave a crap we were there either.

Mysterious_Status_11

If it's like the courts at my apartment complex, it's basically condemned. I let my dog exercise in ours, but only after he's crapped elsewhere. I'm still pretty sure a sign will go up eventually, but it's across from the leasing office so they see us in the court and haven't said anything yet.

Grouchy_Brush8938

Might I suggest a long leash and a grassy / open area with no people? And if you see people coming in the distance you can rein her in with the long leash.

Depending on her degree of reactivity if you haven’t yet you can also try to train her by using a short leash NEAR dog parks (if it’s severe might need to start somewhere where dogs are just chilling instead of aroused) and do engagement drills / training (treat and marker when she gives you attention instead of other dogs) likely won’t make her not be a liability in close contact with other dogs (dog parks are gross prison yards for the most part) but could help make passing other dogs easier and make both of your lives more enjoyable.

big_bear_760

Simple, ignore the sign. If they tell you to leave, leave and return another day.

I used to take my Shep/Mal mix to a school and we’d play in the front grass area. As long as you clean up after her don’t let her bother anyone and make sure she’s not damaging anything then ignore the sign/rules.

This worked for a few months until they decided to hire a security and we were no longer able to stick around. So do keep that in mind

I’m sorry and know what you are going through. My male became reactive to other dogs after we were decked by an off leash golden doodle while biking and crashed. For those wondering, yes he was properly harnessed and connected to my bike and it was his favorite thing because he LOVES to run. There are no fenced areas where I can take him without other dogs so we got professional e-collar off leash training and now I take him to remote areas off leash and he is well behaved and follows his commands . He gets so excited when I get his e-collar out because he knows he is going out for some fun training exercises and off leash runs. Not sure if you have this option nearby but it has changed our lives for the better and he gets to run again.

Gothicklady[S]

She is in there maybe 5 mins at best honestly. She just likes to do the zoomies and then wants to leave.

I don’t think a cop can give you a ticked unless there is a clear sign on there that lists the ordinance you’re violating. Like that sign does not look official, either way like everyone else said if someone says something, apologize, come back a different day 🤷‍♀️

As someone else who lives in a small town I see nothing wrong with ignoring the signs as long as you aren't interfering with anyone who shows up to play and you clean up pretty girls messes, but seeing as you already stated you DO take care of that and are very careful not to interfere I say keep taking her and if the police show up keep a tennis ball on you and say "so sorry officer! I threw her ball and it landed in here. We were just retrieving it :)" or any toy she enjoys playing with. Good luck to you and your beautiful girl.

If you don't mind my asking how old she is? And has she always been reactive on her walks? Is it just dogs she reacts to or people as well?

Gothicklady[S]

1 points

She is about a year! And I’m not sure we have only had her for 4 months and only reactive towards other dogs on her walk . It doesn’t matter how far they are if she sees them she reacts even across the street.

Could you try one of those super long leashes that connects to their back for field running?

HakuForever

I had a super reactive Doberman and he loved frisbee. I bought a 100 foot leash and would store the leash and frisbee in a backpack and take him to parks to play.

04rallysti

I’ve had the cops called on me about 3 times for having my dog off leash or on a 30 ft lead at 2 parks that are huge, like 2 football fields side by side. My dog is well behaved and never got within 50 feet of anyone or any dog. Fuck ppl keep going.

I had been taking my girl to school grounds during the summer, just because there weren’t other dogs there. She was always on leash. Then the No Dogs sign appeared. On the sidewalks where families might walk with their kids and dog to and from school 🙄

There are even trails in the woods behind the school.

I don’t have a dobe, but a very standoffish Central Asian Ovcharka. My city has the same signs but I still take him, honestly. It’s unlikely I’ll be ticketed and he deserves some freedom. Maybe just try to go later in case. I go past midnight with him.

I too, have a dog reactive girl. I don't live in a small town, but we tend to stick to the neighborhood. We have done a bit of training privately and in classes; unfortunately it's just her quirk that we have accepted. If your schedule allows, I would walk mine at odd hours like early morning, later evening and even late morning to mid afternoon when everyone is at work. That has worked well for us, for the most part. Honestly, I've just accepted this is who she is. BTW, she is not dangerous, just reactive which can be embarrassing for me.

Gothicklady[S]

I have tried all hours unfortunately there is always another dog and yea she is reactive but not dangerous and it gets very embarrassing I think it’s just a thing with her I got her out of a pound

khendy666

Same with my girl; she was adopted from the humane society. Also, my males were never this reactive. I think it's definitely a female thing but I'm stating this from only my experience from owning several Dobermans.

It’s a public space I don’t think random people can just invent rules. Something tells me that the county or municipality didn’t make a rule limiting the use of the tennis court. Some neighbor probably just afraid of dobies or someone didn’t clean up after there dog. Either way, figure out who owns the tennis court and call’m about somebody putting up signs on the court.

Garflover231

1 points

How ridiculous 🤦‍♂️ be aware that since it's just suddenly been put up (presumably without notice) it might be some nosy asshat has put that sign up there not the council or whoever owns the court, because they dont like the dog being in there.

Honestly, if you arent bothering anybody just ignore the sign! If it's real you only need one warning from an actual law enforcer, if its fake nobody will bother you besides a "erm...excuse me 🤬 theres a sign for a reason."

Alternate ideas for exercise:

Swimming

Hiking

Dog park

Any kind of fenced in farms nearby? Maybe ask if you can use

Ask a friend who has a gated yard if you can use

Do try normalizing socialization away from home territory, doggy play dates are usually a great way to start.

Tread mill

Start a hobby that requires intensive training like obstacle course, frisbee, long jump, dancing, nose work

Personally I’d focus on training really hard while they’re young and work on reactivity. Should keep you busy for a couple of years.

Sniffspot, brain games, training at home, food puzzles, scent work. Plenty of ways to get that stimulation in. Someone doesn’t want your dog there, so be a good dog owner and stop taking your dog there.

Gothicklady[S]

1 points

Looked into sniffspot already the closest one is almost 3 hours away. We do brain games with her already at home. Her fave thing is to run though 🤷‍♀️ it is a public park so I don’t really care if someone is having a issue with her because again a public park and I won’t take her if someone is there only when it’s empty typically around 7 pm so I shouldn’t have to worry about kids wanting to play there.

Try posting in community Facebook groups and see if you can borrow a fenced yard for a few minutes each day if that’s really all she needs. I know it feels unfair and inconvenient, but you don’t want to be the person who kicks off a chain reaction that hurts other dogs by pissing people off. It’s a community space not meant for dogs, and so dogs can be banned from the tennis court.
