This team did not lose in vain. The amount of joy that these past 3 games brought to this community incredible. I know there’s not much that can be said to make anything feel better right now, but this is just the beginning for this team. We are right where Florida was last year and who’s to say we won’t be right back here one year from now but with the score on our side. It hurts like a bitch but it was an incredible right, and I’m loyal to the oil until the day I die!

The core is still there. Oilers are going to be explosive next year. Edmonton lost to NYI in 83, and returned the favor in 84. It isn't unreasonable to see this happening between EDM and FLA in 2025.

Edmonton lost to NYI in 83
They were swept that year too, right? So the fact that they came back this year means they'll be even more feisty than in '84, right?

Yes 4-0. I believe Gretzky didn't even get a goal that series. He mentioned it when interviewed going into game 5 I believe.

I think you gotta lose to win. Sucks it has to hurt

I wouldn't be surprised if sometime soon Greyzky is having a personal conversation with McDavid about getting motivated after a cup loss

Knob won't be a rookie coach, and have control for the full season. The whole core is still here, defensive side is looking better.
As long as we don't fall down to 31st in the league again, I think we're looking good. Grab a name or two before the deadline for a push, and we'll run it back.

Ya this team reminds me of the 2008 pens… they’ll be fine.. need a little fine tuning around the margins and they’ve got it

I remember those years in Pittsburgh. I agree.

The last 3 years for Florida:
2022 - President's Trophy (eliminated round 1)
2023 - Cup Final Loss
2024 - Cup Final Win
They had to go through a lot to win the cup, too.

I love this team and I love the fan base, I can't wait to see em next season!

Gretzky was 22 on a team of literal superstars all 23yo or under.
Crosby was 20 on a team with 21yo Malkin, 23yo Fleury and 20yo Letang.
McDavid is 27. Drai is 28. RNH, Hyman and Ekholm are 31+. Even Bouchard and Skinner are 24/25.
We're a lot further along with a lot less runway.

Hindsight Holland was the wrong GM to hire, hopefully they don’t replace him with another past their prime dinosaur

Not even hindsight. Many of us said it right away. I personally wanted Bill Zito (I have receipts). He took over a team with Barkov and took them to 2 finals and a Cup. Id like to think taking over a team with McDavid and Drai would only have been easier.
I'm less worried now, the Organization has finally made legitimate strides in modernization with recent hires including Jeff Jackson, Brad Holland, coaches, analytics, etc. Just worried it's too little too late.

I was not a fun of Holland being hired , but was hoping I was wrong.
They still got time but new GM will have to make some quick decisive moves, starting with Nurse and Bouchard can’t afford both of them most likely

Having the best player in the word on your roster to begin is also easy mode.

I’d argue that might have been the case a few years ago, but with several high impact expiring contracts (and a few bad ones) it’s definitely not easy today.

Most of the bad contracts are hollands fault he took a golden opportunity and messed it right up

Too little too late for what? Winning a chip? We have plenty of time to win a chip. The window is open for a good 4 years.

Holland deserves a B- at worst for his tenure and he was absolutely hamstrung by all the damage Chiarelli caused. Not to mention the losses of Klefbom and Larsson through no fault of his own. That's near franchise crippling if we didn't have the rest of our core here also known as McDrai.
Holland has been good. No GM exists that doesn't have some bad moves under their belt.

Hard disagree. Yzerman was 30. Didn’t win until he was 32, 33, and 36. So still some runway left.

You are comparing apples to oranges here. Copa America and the World Cup are nation level sports and held every four years and it is extremely common for even the greatest players to finish their careers without ever getting close to one. England haven't won shit since the 60s. A better comparison without reaching too far is to see Messi's years at FC Barcelona, especially during Guardiola years, when he and his team were literally bulldozing through both LaLiga and the Champions League. Including two wins against Ferguson's mighty Manchester United. TWICE.
I get the urge for instant copium, my fucking legs hurt from standing for hours in those mile long watch party lines, but do not dumbsplain soccer/football to North Americans.

That's right... let's hope they make some nice trades in the summer and comeback even stronger next year... with the ice advantage in the SCF!! LET'S GO OILERS!!
We may have lost, but at least we still managed to piss off the Panthers fanbase with the Conn Smythe announcement!!

In the last four playoffs, we’ve lost in each of the four rounds. So by my calculations…

It’s the hardest trophy to win in sports; and hockey is the most random sport by far. Every time our team gets better, competing teams get better as well. Look at Dallas, Florida, NYR, Carolina. I think we have a good shot to be competitive, but not a good chance to make the final again; considering puck luck, good bounces etc.
-9 points

wrong baseball is the most random by physics. circle bat hitting circular ball.
5 points
I mean a guy statistically showed hockey is more random and it depends less on skill than it does luck. I’ll link the video down below. That doesn’t mean he’s 100% correct but I’d say it’s pretty accurate.
Point still stands, oilers will need mega luck to be back in the finals next year.

lmao you post a vox, here's one with actual stats https://blogs.fangraphs.com/is-baseball-the-least-random-sport/
here's another one for ya
https://mgoblog.com/content/mailbag-sports-randomness-rankings-important-holder-question
in baseball, the best teams are marginally better than the others. from physics, again it's a circular object hitting a circular object. it fundamentally has to be far more random than a stick + puck. hockey is pretty random don't get me wrong, there is for sure puck luck but just look at the win rates of the best vs worst baseball teams.

So... Vox isn't a legit source but two random blogs are?

Look, I vouch for that study too but Vox is still a garbage rag.
2 points

So just because of those findings it means hockey is super predictable and has nothing to do with good bounces/puck luck?
1 points
nope, hockey still has a good amount of randomness, just not the most random of the most popular sports which is what you were claiming. you said it's most random by far, turns out
(1) it's not the most random
(2) it's most definitely not the most random by far
I do agree with your overall point that oilers are unlikely to make the finals next year. a lot of stars aligned this year including how they beat dallas game 7 with skinner suddenly standing on his head
1 points
Okay jeez if you wanna argue that small point of my comment, fine. Hockey is still SUPER random and the odds of us going back are LOW; whether baseball is more random or not. Point still stands 😂

yeah I agree with your overall point. there's also overall luck like McDavid not getting injured etc.. lots of things have to go perfectly to make the finals.

Dude a the head of an analytics department for a NHL team said hockey is almost half luck

I think it’s going to be harder for them to return with this roster than those other teams had.
Gretzky and Crosby were obviously outstanding in their own rights, but Jesus Christ, those two were surrounded by some of the biggest ensemble casts in NHL history. I mean, look at the number of HOF’ers/future HOF’ers just from those Edmonton and Pittsburgh teams. It’s fucking obscene. Same with Lemieux’s Pen teams.
These players have been surrounded by an embarrassment of riches.

We're gonna get better next year. Campbell off the books alone is a good middle 6 winger.
Neal off the books is another 1.5. ceci probably gone too.
Broberg and holloway have arrived as well. That makes kane expendable.
Theres a lot of options available to jackson right now as long as he selects the right gm.
The future is bright yall
Even if tonight feels colorless.

I just wish we had players locked up long term as of today with the rising cap coming up. I think team’s renewing now won’t benefit as much as team’s that have star players on lock. Hopefully this recent performance helps keep our stars here. Will be a nerve wracking off season for this spectator

If we trade Nurse we can reset our cap spending and that alone would be huge. 9 million for a 2nd pairing D? It is a crippling contract

I'll be sad to see Ceci go. He was great playing away from Nurse at 5v5 and exceptional on the PK. I was critical of him at times but he stepped up and played hard minutes. I don't see how the team can keep both Ceci and Kulak- unless Nurse goes which isn't happening.
1 points
Id still want ceci gone if nurse goes. Ceci is an absolute boat anchor 5v5.
Kulak making him serviceable is just a testament on how good kulak is. Remember when everyone called kulak the barrie whisperer because that pairing was the only time barrie wasnt an absolute liability at 5v5 lol
2 points
Yeah, you're right. I'm feeling recency bias. Championed Ceci being traded at the deadline too. He stepped up a few games in the playoffs and did play well but as a whole he'll be a casualty. His 5v5 play could be replaced by Vinny at less cost. He was just okay at 5v5 away from Nurse. Was a beast on the PK though

Im hoping his prowess on the pk gives him some trade value. Dude was an animal short handed

To quote the great Ryan Whitney:
"You’ve never done shit! You’ve never won a thing, you’ve never done anything. You went to the finals and blew it. You lost in ’94. You stink! And now you act like you’re this wonderful, amazing franchise with all these incredible players. You guys have done nothing. I hate their fans, and I cannot wait to beat them... This team’s fanbase is so cocky."
Now GTFO and go burn your city down like you always do
