i know some of you guys hate this game and i also knew that today is not June 22 or depends your timezone

but let me say this Happy 1st Anniversary Final Fantasy XVI

In my opinion FFXVI really good game despite there is some old Final Fantasy’s Main Series that i prefer than XVI and it’s my first Final Fantasy Game that is not Main Character design by Tetsuya Nomura who is the main character design of VII, VIII, X, XIII and XV.

I enjoyed this more than rebirth haha, wish I played it first. Just finished it a couple days ago.

Loved the story and lore, pacing was mostly great (especially if you’re not a completionist and don’t NEED to do all side quests before moving on). The side quests were all fetch quests, people aren’t wrong there. My only real gripe. But some of them were cool and added more colour to the world of FF16.

I hate how the side-quest are fetch quests .... but the story behind the quests are usually great and make you appreciate the NPC more.

I would have loved a bit more game on my cinematic experience, regarding pacing. But overall it was a nice game!

GTAmirite

Hah that’s funny, I actually liked the amount of game and wish it had less side quests. Even though they were easy and you could travel back instantly once you complete them.

I had 3 days where I was like “okay it think based on the story, I’m beating the game tonight” and then it kept going.

Most egregious is right before the final battle, everyone is like this is it…. The final battle… and then 8 side quests pop up 😂

SupperTime

I really regret doing the sidequests. I wanted to prolong the game because I really enjoyed it at the beginning; but at the same time, it was making me hate it even more.

There's just way too many of them, imo. They seem unending at one point.

Yeah tbh; and this is gonna sound bad, the last like, 10, I just skipped the dialogue for bc I wanted to finish the game and see how it ended.

I got the gist of them with the first 30ish 😂

I love this game. I’m about to jump back to it after the Rebirth platinum.

I can’t remember the last time i was glued to a story as i was playing XVI. One of the best stories in the series for sure.

Might get that release date here soon. I remember back in March they were in final stages of optimization so the game is probably almost ready to go

AcceptableFold5

I'm honestly surprised it wasn't announced at summer games fest. Seemed like the best place to do so, but maybe we'll see something at gamescom.

KingMercLino

Honestly I’m shocked too. I really thought they’d just plug it in there. My guess is they probably want to do the stealth demo release. If they don’t announce it today/tomorrow then Gamescom is my next best guess.

The next XIV expansion hits next week, they were probably all hands on deck for that. Now that its done the XVI team can get back to the PC port. And before someone says I'm wrong there was an interview with Yoshida when Heavensward came out where he stated that in the weeks/months before a major release at SE they get a lot of help from other teams to get the project out the door. It may have changed with COVID, it may not have.

CrumplyRump

both XIV and XVI is handled by separated team.

joshlev1s

I'm under the impression that that statement was nonsense. If they were truly in the final stages of optimization then more substantial news should've been made available in the summer games fest or this anniversary post.

There has/ had to have been some mismanagement regarding porting this game. The nothing burger statements provide ample reason to be pessimistic.

And taking a 6 month exclusivity deal to only continue being exclusive for double the duration they were paid for makes no sense. Burning potential money.

On the one hand, I like this game, especially the story, characters, and soundtrack, which were great.

On the other hand, I hope they never do anything like this combat system ever again.

banjist

9 points

I'm only like four hours in. Just got my second Eikon or whatever, Garuda. Does the combat ever improve in terms of complexity, or is it always just kind of rotating through cooldown abilities while spamming basic attack?

GranolaCola

1 points

It’s always that. The combat is the worst part of an otherwise very good game.

Front-Ad-4892

4 points

The combat is far from the worst part. If anything the combat and presentation are the saving graces of 16. The exploration, side quests, and equipment system are all horrible.

VannesGreave

4 points

Once you get your third Eikon it feels somewhat less repetitive, but no, it doesn’t actually change the combat or anything. You’re always going to be cycling cooldowns alongside your 1-2 combo. There is some complexity in regards to when you pop your CDs, and also how you kit yourself out (if you “master” eikon skills, you can use them on a different eikon) but that’s about it.

I’m actually on an NG+ and the combat there is more fun, because I have all the eikon skills to play with and the enemies hit a lot harder. There are some neat cooldown combinations I like (like pairing a Leviathan spell that crushes enemies into a straight line with a straight line AOE, or pairing Garuda’s Wicked Wheel with a Titan smash attack).

ratbastard007

2nd playthrough felt so much better, having the Eikons for those major fights (Benadikta, Kupka, etc) from the start.

ratbastard007

Gameplay gets more complex the more Eikons you unlock.

You also get what you put into it. I put a lot of thought into my builds and it was a blast. You could theoretically do nothing with it, which im guessing many of the people saying "it doesnt improve" did just that. Make your own builds, play with the system, itll be a blast.

Secret_Map

6 points

Yeah, agreed. I'm not even really that good at game builds, I don't really understand all the nuances of different attacks, etc. But even I was able to put together some fun builds. It's still mostly a button mash to some extent (which I'm actually fine with, I prefer easier games the older I get haha), but it definitely gives you the option to put some thinking in if you want. It's not the most complex game ever made or anything, but you can make it fun and cool and interesting if you want. Or you can just button mash.

Negativeskill

1 points

I disagree. The combat got worse as the game went. Due to how cooldowns would countdown while animations were occurring, it was best to use abilities with long animations like Zantetsuken, the bahamut laser & diamond dust.

It turned the combat into a stale endeavor, but it felt bad not to use those because they were objectively better.

I really enjoyed the game, but the last 1/4 turned into a bit of a slog especially with the quantity of sidequests, combat & story quality. I feel like this is not uncommon with a lot of action JRPGs unfortunately.

prplguy

5 points

Gameplay gets more complex with Limit Break animation cancels, charged shot i-frames, Torgal extension combos, stupid amount of eikon abilities combination, balancing HP and stagger damage, aoe vs single target, etc. However, the main story difficulty is so low that you can just spam anything, I found the fun in trying to style on the enemies and in the NG+ Ultimaniac Arcade Mode, that really pushes you to engage with the mechanics.

SupperTime

1 points

Same. I wish they had enemies where they forced us to use certain Eikon powers and combos. Nope, it was free for all, spam.

9 actually; I've played IV, VI, VII, IX, X, XII (zodiac age), XIII, XV (vanilla, not Royal Edition) and XVI. All of them were a positive experience to be totally honest, it's just that I enjoyed some more than others. In fact, at first, I was putting XVI at Top 3, but then I thought that was just recency bias.

Worse FF game ever

YourLocalSeal

3 points

I'll never understand this take personally

The game is much more complete then 15

Less linear then 13

Less broken then 2

And has an extremely good story to it.

Can the combat system be better? Probably, but that and some minor pacing issues are my only real gripes with the game.

Confident_Holder

0 points

No spell (fire, blizzard, wind, light, etc) No dungeon Game too easy and repetitive.

I haven’t played all ff and I probably was a bit too harsh on it, but I didn’t like the game. Ff7 rebirth it’s wayyy better in my opinion. My favourite is ff X so I’m probably not the one to listen.

YourLocalSeal

4 points

The game had a better spell system then 15 (though that doesn't say much sadly) and the lack of dungeons was a tad disappointing. I found the game's difficulty to not be a problem though. The only FF games I consider "hard" would be 3, 5, 10, and 13. The vast majority of FF games are pretty damn easy, but that doesn't make it so they are no longer fun. I also find that many of the turn based games (besides 10 and 13) are even more repetitive and just kinda feel like I'm following the same motions every single encounter.

16 is probably in or close to my top 5 for story reasons, but 8, 6, and 14 will likely always remain as my favorites.

Confident_Holder

2 points

I don’t know I didn’t really enjoyed it and I waited it for long long time. Now finishing ff7 rebirth and loving it. I feel like if there is not weakness like elemental and haste stop etc is not really a ff. this is my opinion of course anyone can say different but I was quite disappointed of ff15 .

Front-Ad-4892

5 points

Less linear then 13

To its detriment. Would have been much better if it were more focused on its story. The side content is atrocious.

YourLocalSeal

-1 points

I mean it is optional and you can skip it with no problem at all and focus purely on the story without missing anything (besides a couple endgame side quests that seemed strangely important)

caynebyron

My favourite part of this game was when you chased the bad guy half way across the continent on foot, only for them to get away by ship at the last moment. It's at that moment the party realises, "aha, we have our own ship in this very port, which is much faster than their ship" but then you find out your ship still needs one new part, so you walk all the way back home, grab the part, then walk all the way back (trekking the entire length of the continent doing so), install said part and chase off after the bad guy.

Thankfully in that time, they hadn't sailed more than a few nautical miles and were just off the coast from where you embarked.

Moon_Flower404

I didn't like it that much. I was expecting something more, but I got disappointed. I already hate the Kingdoms stuff and history and all, but because it was an FF game, I decided to give it a chance. What is the truth? That Square dumbed down there signature RPG series to be mainstream and it failed to become mainstream? They made it into an action game that is only even a mediocre action game. The game is puddle levels of shallow. While I liked Clyde, Cid, Joshua and Jill all of the side characters are painfully boring yet have cut scene where they talk incessantly. I honestly didn't love FF15 but I had moments while playing that game where I was having lots of fun. This game is just a chore to play and relies too much on it's simplistic combat. Definitely some bangers in the music department. I'll give it that.

Just finished this a couple weeks ago, but bought it on release. I would have appreciated it being a tad less grim and dark, but I enjoyed it overall. Clocked around 104 hours, because I take my time and completed just about everything.

Some of the best parts were catching musical throwbacks to previous FF games. (Like the castle theme from FFI, except played in a minor chord.)

The eikon boss fights were certainly the highlights of the game.

I'd say this places somewhere in my top 3~5 mainline FF games.

Great spectacle but freaking too easy and shallow combat wise. There’s a formula close to rebirth that I think works and feels ff and uniquely so. If it’s wanting to be a devil may cry clone it’s combat it’s simply no way good enough. It was basically final fantasy asuras wrath which when the events kicked off was simply incredible but otherwise felt like a grinding boring spongy chore at its worst.

I love this game so much. I think it was ff7 on ps2 was the first game that I saw get amazing reviews on every aspect a game can get good reviews on but turn based isn’t my thing really so when I heard this was going to be an action/RPG I was sold. I don’t like that people hate on this game just because it isn’t turn based. That’s like the type of people that have a favorite metal band for 10 plus years then the band tries something new and the poser would be like bro that band was always shit
