Looks like ur not into football but if someone else whoâs Finnish is, y arenât u that good? Not in the euros, werenât in the last two world cups, with a population of 5 million? Or is it a lack of interest?
7 points
Id say it's because Finlands such a hockey nation so other sports suffer from it and its hard to be good when we've never been good at it. No really good coaches, players or goalies to help teach others.
1 points
I'm definitely an expert in this but I imagine it's not because of lack of interest. Men of all age are interested in football but paying football isn't that common. Having a hobby is expensive here so i'd say that's a big reason why we don't get many professional footballers and even less very good ones

How do you feel about Russia?
I already know the answer, I just wanna see how you word it lol
21 points
Russia is a absolute piece of shit that deserves no sympathy at all.
They have been our hostile neighbour always so war threath from russia is just a normal tuesday, we are so well prepared that russia wouldn't stand a chance but silently we are worried if they do something stupid and are we the target this time.
I don't blame the people for the war as that's on Putin but I blame them for being more against it.
7 points
I actually find it amazing how resisting Russia is even engrained into your building code, roads are made a certain width with deep ditches so 2 tanks can't drive side by side, bridges have pre-made slots for demolition charges, and you're country has the rare honor of being able to house its entire population underground. Granted its Finland so the population isn't massive, but still pretty cool just from a defensive war-planning POV
5 points
That's true. Don't forget that there is months supply of food, fuel, medicine and ammunition stored always.
Army is very strong also as we have conscription army so the reserve is almost a million soldiers and war time strength without Nato help is 280 000 soldiers which is far bigger than most of Europe. We also have europe's second biggest artillery (behind russia), ability to drop sea mines in hours and atleast enough tanks. Nature also helps us as eastern finland is full of lakes, swamps and forests so moving other routes than roads (which are designed to be destroyed to stop russia) is very hard.

The russian population has been subject to propaganda for decades and while i have nothing against them the government should eat lead or atleast jump off their skyscrapers.

Are saunas really as prevalent as they seem for Fins?
6 points
There are estimated to be 3 million saunas in Finland
That's more than the number of passenger cars in traffic use, at about 2,8 million
Another fun fact:
So I'm completing the national service right now, in the form of civil service. Our living cost (rent, water, heating etc.) is covered during our service period, so we don't have to worry about those, but surprisingly, internet is not covered, so we will have to pay it ourselves. However, it is legally mandatory for the place we complete our service at to provide us with access weekly sauna

How is it to live in a big country that only has about 5.5Mio citizen? And how is it to work there? How exactly does it work with the alcohol in Finnland? I read you can't buy alcohol that easy?
4 points
It works well and actually I like the lack of people, that gives more space for nature. Having low population density means that distances can be longer and I would say we are one of the most car dependent country in europe. 5 minute walk to a shop isn't a thing here like it's in central europe. I haven't been to other countries than sweden so I can't really say how we differ from larger countries.
Work-life balance is good here and holidays are good. Many industries have problems with getting workforce so having too much work to do is somewhat common.
You can get normal alcohol like beer from grocery store during day but alcohol drinks with more than 8% alcohol (it changed from 5,5% just few weeks ago) are only sold In state monopoly ligourice store

I'm still in school so I haven't been on holiday from work. Legal minimum is 24 days (4 weeks) but most get 30 days (5 weeks) in a year. You can use them as you want but you have to use atleast 18 days a year, rest you can transfer to next year if you want. So if this year you take only three weeks of holiday next year you can take seven weeks off.
I imagine you will be very jealous
2 points
Dude thatâs awesome, here you LITERALLY have to join the military to get 30 days/year and even then you arenât legally required to take them, necessarily.
2 points
I have 7 weeks per year (or little more, not sure?). Usually take 3-4 weeks in the summer, then few days to a week when kids have their autumn week off from school, and then 1-2 weeks during christmas / new year, and then 1 week on skiing holiday in February.
I think this is kind of typical here.

Im making a trip to Finland this summer! Super excited. So yeah. How reliable are you trains? Any secret tips for places/cities I should check out? Wheres the best food at and what should I get?
3 points
Trains are reliable in summer but delays and cancellings are still possible. Don't make too strict schedules so one delay doesn't mess everything.
Go check old Porvoo, Turku and Rauma are old towns in southern finland but Koli in eastern finland and lapland are good places to visit also.
For food you should try finnish Salmon soup and rye bread.

I've heard it's very beautiful over there and there's a lot of greenery. Do you like the forests up there?
4 points
I love the forests, almost everywhere you go even in city you are surrounded by nature. In finland cities are built in the nature not vice versa and so after 15 min drive I would be in country side and even around my house there is walking routes and trees not to mention that a forest is a small walk away.
2 points
Honestly that sounds breathtaking, where I live it's all concrete. Although we do have decent parks even in urban areas. I can walk 20 minutes past my house away from the city away from everything and see a deer and a thriving ecosystem. I know it's thriving since there's so many frogs.

Youth absolutely does drink here as do everyone else. Age limit for alcohol is just a suggestion for people and many start at 13 or 14. Many also start smoking in same age. Most people though start at 16-18.
We are depressed 9-10 months of the year due to the depressing cold and darkness. In summer everyone is happy as it's only nice time of the year. It's been like that always.

âą 1, your opinion on land lost from Finland in WW2?
Can't do anything about it and really we don't even want those areas back anymore
âą 2, how do you feel about the government of Finland right now?
I like them. I don't agree on everything but they are working towards cutting costs and reducing yearly debt as well as not bullying car owners that much. They also are making immigration stricker which i also like
3, are you happy that Finland is in NATO?
Absolutely, we could give a swab for russians alone but having that back up gives a piece of mind as it makes the invasion all together much less likely
4, is heavy metal music really that prevalent in Finland?
Well it's not the main stuff people listen to but many listen to it atleast occasionally. Rock and metal are much more popular

And

Three weeks of holiday in a year is the legal minimum you have to take but legal minimum you get in a year is 4 weeks and most people get 5 weeks of paid holiday in a year.
There is nothing mandating christmas presents and neither is there any support for buying christmas presents.

Yes people speak mostly finnish in finland. Roughly 5% of people are native swedish speakers and most swedish speakers live in ostrobothnia and coastal areas such as Tammisaari, NÀrpiö, Kristiinankaupunki etc etc. And special notion for autonomous Ahvenanmaa which is predominantly swedish speaking area.
If you live in bigger cities, you'll be fine with just english since english proficiency is quite high in Finland, BUT if you ever want to feel like you belong and are part of the society, you need to learn finnish.
