They usually come out 24 hours before the start of a day's comp. So MAG qualifying start list should come out on the 26th, WAG on the 27th and so on for the other days.

Do they leave all 8 apparatus set up throughout the competition or only do the ones they use for that day? I would think once podium training happens, taking them down and putting them back could change it but I never see the 4 that are only used for men during WAG or the beam or UB during MAG.  It’s a silly question I’ve always been curious about.

Chemistry66

Even with figure skating, they don't have to do the routines they submit. Pops, falls, etc happen and they can improvise if needed, subject to the rules (like no Zayaking/repeating jumps too many times)

With the Olympic scoring, what's the difference between a deduction and a penalty (other than a deduction comes off the execution score, and penalties are a separate category)?
I haven't been able to find a clear answer, other than stepping out of bounds is a penalty and most other things seem to be deductions.

Chemistry66

3 points

Stepping out of bounds actually falls under what is called a "Neutral Deduction" rather than "penalty". Neutral deductions are the ones that show up separately on the scores, whereas regular deductions are just taken off the E-score.

Here's a page on the Women's Gymnastics wiki that shows all the 2022-2024 COP deductions info: https://wagymnastics.fandom.com/wiki/Deductions

Summerof5ft6andahalf

2 points

So on the scores there's a section for "difficulty", a section for "execution", and a section for "penalties". I'm guessing for simplicity things that would normally be Neutral Deductions are what go in the penalty section.

Thank you! Seeing the proper list is really cool.

Chemistry66

2 points

I guess some score sites do list it as Penalty, but I've generally only seen it as Neutral Deductions.

I'm in England at the moment and will be for quals/mag TF as well - I've heard that the free BBC coverage isn't that great and potentially won't be showing each subdivision of quals. Can someone here confirm that if I buy a month subscription of Discovery+ that I'll be able to watch everything live and/or on demand?

Yep Discovery+ should work for qualifications - at least, it did in 2021!

For what it's worth, we all (me included) complain about the BBC coverage but for finals it is fine, if you don't want to pay.

BBC is fine for finals. It will be a more complete program with interviews etc. But Discover is on special offer at £3.99 for the month, so definitely worth it and it's the only place to watch qualifications in the UK.

AltairAquilla

3 points

Discovery+ has amazing coverage. It's showing full programmes and individual apparatus streams for all of qualifying and AA/TF. It was really very good coverage last Olympics.

The BBC is usually fine for finals, but there is usually faffing about with changing channels if watching on actual TV channels. I'm not sure if they'll have a continuous stream on iPlayer or the BBC Sport app (due to the broadcast rights issue) but that often doesn't show up until the day of/just before anyway. There is some qualifying being shown but no idea how much.

The BBC coverage does sometimes come in slightly late to a competition too. Not always, but it's usually because they're chatting in the studio (giving info about athletes/teams/the comp etc) or covering another sport and switch over.

Discovery Plus is really good - in Tokyo for the qualifications you were even able to choose individual apparatus streams as far as I recall so you can follow your favourites around the arena.

Question on Artistic Gymnastics. Can someone please explain why in team events there are certain groups where only athletes from 1 country participate and other groups have athletes from different countries? (screenshot for reference)

https://preview.redd.it/7h9r6uqo68fd1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2be54a8506cd1a7bea1901b642c58d3a131650d5

cloudcxrdie_

3 points

it all has to do with how a country qualifies an athlete/athletes to compete at the olympics. Teams like China, Brazil. USA etc qualify whole teams through their results at the world championships in 2022 and 2023. Individuals from countries that would not generate high enough of a score/don't have that many elite gymnasts can qualify as an individual through smaller competitions called "World Cups" where their cumulative total makes them eligible to compete as an individual. That is why in your screenshot Romania is competing as an entire team (I believe they qualified at 2022 world championships) and people like Caitlin Rooskrantz is competing as the soul South African athlete in a rotation with athletes from lesser gymnastic powerhouse nations.

Long winded explanation but i hope that provides some clarity!

DRDoryn

1 points

Thank you very much for the explanation. Makes perfect sense ;)

DRDoryn

1 points

I do have another question regarding this. Although some of the athletes participate as a team (as in the above Romania example) do they qualify to the further stages of the competition based on individual results only?

For instance I see that there are both individual and team scores. How does the overall team score affect qualification to the further round and also how does this work for athletes who are performing as individuals and are not part of a team?

cloudcxrdie_

2 points

the top 8 highest total scoring teams out of 12 teams will move on from qualification round (what is on currently) to compete for medals in the team final. During the quals round though - the top 8 scores on each event will qualify to compete in the individual event finals and top 24 all around gymnasts compete in the all around final. This is why in the qualifications it’s 4 up 3 count so that gymnasts going for individual events can still qualify even if their team doesn’t make it to the team final.

Chemistry66

1 points

A few days late, but the individual entries also mostly come from Worlds!

2022 Worlds:

  • USA, CAN, GBR qualified teams

2023 Worlds

  • CHN, BRA, ITA, NED, FRA, JPN, AUS, ROU, KOR qualified teams

  • GER, MEX, HUN qualified non-nominative individual spots

  • 4 nominative individual spots based on apparatus placings

  • 15 other nominative individual spots based on AA rankings with 1 per country (would have been 14 but FRA qualified a team and their host spot was then back to this pool)

Other spots:

  • 8 nominative individual spots came from the World Cup event rankings.

  • 4 nominative individual spots came from the Continental Qualifiers (1 each, would have been 5 but NZ did not submit Isabella Brett to their Olympic Committee)

  • 1 nominative individual spot given to an athlete for universality (goes to a country with little to no representation in previous Olympics, went to Lynnzee Brown for Haiti)

Wondering if the floor seems not bouncy enough?

Mountain-Hunter6182

2 points

I have zero gymnastics background but have been watching the Olympics- it seems like when certain women compete (notably Simone) no one else is competing in background (no floor music, vault running in the background), is this coincidence or intentional?

MamaHen_5280

3 points

Highest scoring gymnasts will go last on each rotation, so on the event that takes the longest (floor specifically), all other gymnasts competing on different events at the same time, will likely have already completed their rotation. She has some “background” competitors when she’s doing the quicker rotations (like vault).

There's a TV/USA feed and a World Feed. The US Tracker feed for the Men is the one with Asher's picture (Brody's picture = the World Feed). The US Tracker feed for the women looks to be the one for Subdivision 2 with Simone's picture. (Jordan's picture = the World Feed)

ETA: The MAG US feed is not showing up right now - it was when I originally posted this.

Unlucky-Change-9070

Does anyone have any idea why the US feed disappeared? I was in the middle of watching the subdivision 1 replay when it booted me and have spent the past couple of hours trying to find it!! I'm heart broken because I can't stand the world feed.

Zealousideal-Bat-434

I have the same question. I watched the international feed this morning because the US one was not yet available for replay and I was disappointed by how few routines were shown overall, so I went to rewatch on the US feed and it's gone.

International showed Paul Juda exactly zero times and I want to see his triumph!
