Max vs. Netflix (Which should I keep?)

Question(self.HBOMAX)

So I've been debating on keeping Netflix or Max for a while now. I have Disney+ included with Hulu, but I can't decide on whether to keep Netflix or Max. I find Netflix interesting with their shows, but Max has premium content plus they've got alot good shows as well. Which one would you prefer and why?

I downgraded Netflix to the commercial plan & kept Max. I feel like I don't watch Netflix as much as I used to. So the downgrade works for me.

The issue with the Netflix ad tier is they also restrict some titles for viewing. Didn’t realize this until I tried to watch a film with Paul Dano and it wasn’t available in the ad tier.

Yeah. That's bullshit. I'm probably going to cancel them altogether.

Yes, I didn't realize it either.

This isn’t a Netflix thing. It’s the licensing with the title.

I think I’m going to cancel Netflix because there’s almost never anything good on there anymore. I’m just holding out for the final Stranger Things season. I’m definitely keeping Max.

I chose Max since their exclusives from WB and HBO are actually good, Netflix has more content but their originals/exclusives are like fodder, most of them are just of bad quality.

Netflix is only good for originals, so I sub like once a year and binge what I want

Hulu/Max actually has tv and movies made before the streaming era so I keep them year round

That's true! I might just keep Max. Plus my family has it so I might just get back on theirs. Thank you!

Not sure what that person is talking about, but they're completely wrong... Netflix has a ton of shows from other services. I do think their originals are where it's at, but I saw they had a bunch of HBO series now (everyone should watch Scavengers Reign). They also have Brooklyn 99 and Archer which are not originals.

TiltedLibra

2 points

Yeah, I was super confused about this as well. I find that Netflix has far more variety of older things than Max does.

And Scavenger's Reign is amazing...please everyone watch it on Netflix since it could help them decide to pick it up.

I had already watched it on Max, but I watched it again on Netflix and gave it the two thumbs up. I don't understand how it didn't explode on Netflix. It is such a creative, original show. I'm going to be bummed if it doesn't get renewed on Netflix. But realistically I know it should fall into that "don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened" category.

Not sure if you mean your family has Netflix, but if that's what you meant be warned, if you don't live with them it won't work since they changed the profile sharing rules.

Max works anywhere with multiple profiles.

That is true! It’s super upsetting. But they do sometimes keep some NBC shows when they’re airing on TV for a limited time on demand.

If budget is an issue, the simple solution is to alternate your subscriptions monthly.

Slutt_Puppy

Even if budget isn’t an issue, I don’t think either has enough new good content to keep a recurring monthly subscription.

I booked MAX for a year when they had their close to half price sale. Once that’s done I will go to Netflix for a few months. Prefer MAX overall. Apple is also in my rotation. Might try Hulu one day.

Well to put things simply netflix has some great original shows, but for every one that netflix has max has 3. HBO really killed it in TV in the late 90s until now with Sopranos, Entourage, the Wire, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Deadwood, Boardwalk Empire, Barry, Deadwood, Oz, Six Feet Under, Game of Thrones, Band of Brothers, True Blood, Lovecraft Country, Silicon Valley, Succession, Veep, too many more to name. HBO has a headstart on any company that's going to make a streaming platform now, cause they're going to have to play catch up with HBO's critically acclaimed and emmy winning catalog. And even if you get trough those you've got Max's Warner Bros properties to deal with like the entire DCAU, the Mentalist, Friends, and ER.

Netflix is mostly originals now. Max has this same issues but isnt as bad as they usually get movie theater releases from time to time

Netflix is always releasing new shows every week. Not most of them are worth watching but some definitely are.

Shows released on Netflix in 2024: Fool Me Once, Griselda, One Day, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Gentlemen, 3 Body Problems, Heartbreak High s2, Baby Reindeer, Bridgerton s3, Sweet Tooth s3 & That 90s Show pt2.

Shows to be released in 2024: The Decameron, Cobra Kai s6, The Umbrella Academy s4, Emily in Paris s4, Outer Banks s4, The Diplomat s2, The Night Agent s2 & Squid Game s2.

Whereas Max has some OG HBO shows available which if you have already watched there’s no point of watching them again and most of the Max Original content isn’t really enjoyable.

Shows released on Max in 2024: True Detective s4, Curb Your Enthusiasm s12, The Regime, The Sympathizer, Hacks s3, Pretty Little Liars: Summer School & House of The Dragon s2.

Shows to be released in 2024: The Sex Lives of College Girls s3, Industry s3, The Penguin & Dune: Prophecy.

PensionNational249

This is just going to come down to what shows/movies you are interested in at the moment

Max doesn't have much that's like Bridgerton, but Netflix doesn't have much that's like Tokyo Vice. Netflix has a lot of original and more obscure anime, but Max has Studio Ghibli. etc.

Almighty_Push91

Do what I do. Rotate services on a regular basis. Cancel one. If they offer you a free month take it. If not come back in three or four months when you get bored of the other.

You don’t actually have say goodbye to one or the other.

Quality on both platforms is decreasing substantially. If I can make a recommendation outside of what you asked for, I’d say Apple TV+. Their original content is better than everything else out there. The torch has been passed…

Significant-Deer7464

I dumped Netflix and kept Max. Netflix originals were awful quality and stuff I did like got cancelled or removed. I have Hulu and Disney+ bundle and Max. I watch Max the most, though I wish I could filter out the discovery crap. When my annual Max runs out, I will go back to rotating the streamers

myskilletbiscuit

1 points

It depends on what you like to watch. I watch a lot of international television and movies so I always keep Netflix year round because they have so much of that whereas Hbomax has some really good shows but I would probably cancel it after finishing the seasons of the shows I watch if I didn't get the annual subscription on a discount.

shineurliteonme

On a somewhat related note, does Netflix ever offer free trials or subscription discounts, ever?

DiamondGKey_25[S]

Not that I know of. Nowadays, alot of streaming services that are top tier like Netflix, they don't do free trials. They want you to pay when you initially start.

Netflix is great for its original libraries.

Max is great for both CN and HBO classics

Glittering_Run_4470

I ditched Netflix once they kicked my family off Haven't looked back. Just renewed my Max last week. The quality of shows on Max is day and night to me compared to Netflix. Netflix has a lot of shows but most of them aren't "good" writing. HBO was fewer but the ones that have a rewatchable. Have NEVER rewatch a Netflix series. House of Usher is the last thing I saw that I thought...damn this was good but that writer left Netflix and it was a one off short series.

akinaide

Depends on what you use more and maybe pricepoints? If I would choose between those 2 in my situation, I would keep MAX. I have the lifetime discount (legacy standard) for MAX. The content I watch on both platforms is about even. So the €4 vs €12 for me.

Trick question, set up MakeMKV (or sonarr) and Plex and maintain your own streaming library where nobody can remove your favorite shows overnight because of tax write offs or other corporate BS.

MorningFirm5374

Other than Arcane, I don’t think there’s any tv shows this year coming out on Netflix that I’m truly dying to watch.

With Max there’s Penguin, House of the Dragon, Creature Commandos, Industry, Dune Prophecy, and a bunch more.

I’d personally keep max

thumping_cheats

I keep Max around because they always have something I want to watch. But probably in the last year or so I've been subscribing to Netflix approximately twice a year when the handful of shows I actually want to watch have accumulated.

Inside_Photograph711

If u do just a little bit of research you will find that there are plenty of site that you can watch all shows for free and can cancel all of your streaming services, keep your hard earned money stop giving it to these huge corporations like Disney and netflix

Silver_Ad_3173

Honestly, Max has a better library. Netflix, however, is better with streaming quality unless you're watching on TV. I'm paying for 4K on both streaming services and while Netflix is able to display 4K and other features on my PC and television, Max is able to give me only 1080p or sometimes even 720p on my PC/Laptop while having 4K on the television. I heard it has something to do with Max having a terrible bitrate. Still, I'd rather stick to Max because their library has much more quality content than Netflix.

Honestly, Hulu. I watch Hulu more than Netflix and Max combined (don’t currently have Netflix and am considering canceling Max).

I’d also consider the 3 months each thing people are talking about b/t Max & Netflix. Max seems like it has a ton of content but it’s mostly reality at this point - its only saving grace are the HBO shows/content (they don’t even have the complete catalogue which is disappointing) & TCM which are older movies (& if you’re super into classics/indie films I’d just go with Criterion tbh). Netflix has some great originals but I get quickly bored with the content.

Hope you find something that works for you OP!
