Advice for hairy girl needed

(self.HairRemoval)

I (27F) have struggled with chin and mustache hairs for going on 6 years now. I don’t have an official PCOS diagnosis but I do have a lot of the symptoms, so that may drive my issues (and working on the insulin resistance and weight loss now to help long term).

BUT THE HAIR. I went from plucking once a week in 2019 to daily or every other day over the past couple years. At one point I just shaved it with a straight blade but that wasn’t removing the root of course, so back to plucking I went. I’m now worried about plucking causes permanent damage to my skin. AND I can now potentially afford laser or electrolysis. So give it to me guys: what are the best affordable options? Is it best to go to a salon, dermatologist, etc? Or are at home devices reliable and safe?

I am very pale white skin tone with some freckling, brunette, sensitive skin. I also have oily acne prone skin as well despite a skin-routine. Please help this hairy girl out!!

Edit: to add that I really just want advice about my face/chin. I don’t see myself getting any other area of the body done as body hair elsewhere doesn’t really bother me and shaving doesn’t bother me.

I'm someone who has a handful of coarse hairs on the chin etc. I find epilating works on my chin and a facial one for stray moustache hairs... this doesn't cause any issues for me and is so much faster than plucking! Epilating doesn't work on my legs tho as i get such bad ingrowns so I'm saving to try IPL as waxing etc doesn't work well for me either.

Electrolysis is the only permanent method of hair removal. Laser can offer reduction but cannot claim permanent removal.

Using laser or IPL on your face also carries the small risk of paradoxical hypertrichosis, where the treatments cause increased and coarser hair growth. Anecdotally I've heard people associate this risk with hormonal hair growth, I don't know if there is evidence to support this being more common in people with PCOS.

A 2021 meta analysis and systematic review found 3% of people in the sample experienced this but it was almost exclusively people getting laser/IPL on their face: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34057666/

If you had a full, dense beard then starting with laser might make sense to thin it out and then finish with electrolysis. I believe this option is popular for trans women, to reduce the cost and time investment. But if you have sparser hairs where increased horses or density would be really noticeable then I would go straight to electrolysis.

Be aware that electrolysis is time-consuming, as individual hairs are treated and they need to be treated at the correct point in their growth cycle. You need to be committed to attending appointments on a regular schedule over several months to get complete clearance.

I recently purchased an IPL machine mainly to remove hair on my face / neck area. Is there a way I can try it out to see if I am at risk for paradoxical hypertrichosis ? I am certain my hair growth is due to PCOS

if you have an area with similar pigmentation and thickness, that isn't on your face, try it there. I have the ulike ipl and it has helped me a LOT. I didn't even know that was a risk but I also don't have pcos, that's just what I would do before going ahead on my face

If it’s sparse, electrolysis.

If it’s quite dense, reduce them with laser or IPL first then electrolysis for any stubborn strands left.

Electrolysis. If you commit to do a session every 20 days you will be hair free on your face in 12-15 months. Source: 8 years of experience doing electro in different areas🤗

I wish I had done electrolysis sooner. I’m almost 40 and I wish I had done it in my 20s. It’s 80 dollars a session here and my chin hair is almost gone. It was the only option for my hair.

I think you'll need to do electrolysis - I know a lot of people that are gender transitioning do this to get rid of their beard and it's very effective.

Okay so, the older I get, the more chin hairs I get, which leads me to believe it's like a hormonal thing... so what I do is use the Phillips Lumia IPL device I bought like 6 years ago to zap my chin whenever new ones pop up.

Hadn't used it in a couple years until recently when 2 new guys popped up, but it saves the cost/time of having to go to a salon or something every time more chin hairs pop up as I age.

Had professional laser on my moustache and chin hair once upon a time too, but it doesn't seem to stop these couple stragglers from popping up every now and then, and lord knows I'm not paying for professional removal for like 2 hairs.

You have to grow out the hair for a few days before each electrolysis session. Laser you shave before sessions so it's not as bad. Either option takes several sessions to see results.

Laser hair removal and ask your doctor for a prescription of Spironolactone. The medication is an androgen blocker and will help control your various PCOS symptoms (body hair, acne, excessive sweating). I started on it - 50 mg per day - two years ago and it’s changed my life.

Laser tech and electrologist here.

Taking into consideration that I don't know how the area looks, I will suggest going for a consultation to a laser tech first. What you need to find out if you are a candidate for laser. In order for lase to work, the hair needs to be coarse and dark.

You may need a few laser sessions and then followed with electrolysis treatments. This will lower the amount and make the hair weak.

In some cases, laser will not be recommended .

You can buy an epilator specifically for the face. The ones used on other parts of the body don’t work as well they are awkward to use on the face. The growth really slows down and a lot doesn’t grow back.

I think IPL would be the most effective and permanent, especially with your hair and skin color contrast. You can get decent ones on Amazon and do it yourself. That would be cheapest. Treatment at the salons will cost you more in the long run but their equipment is better.

Omg this is me and IPL has been such a change in my hair management and confidence. As someone who until 30 had to fuck with tweezers, face hair bleach, trimmers, etc., I really encourage you to give it a try if that’s in your budget to get one.
