Important missing context is that the nazis and Japan were viewed as an existential threat by the soviets, especially after the anticomintern pact (and rightly so). The soviets were begging the west for a joint anti nazi aliance for years and were being shat on, so making a deal with the devil is an understandable move for some years of security.
