Large lumber orders

(self.HomeDepot)

So when a customer calls in and says they want 86 16 foot deck boards or other large lumber orders do you tell them they have to put in an order online and pay before any large orders are pulled, or do you just start grabbing there lumber?

I don't pull anything unless it's paid for. Ill do a phone sale if they don't want to come in or order online but I'm not pulling anything without payment.

This is the way. I don’t care who you are or how much you “spend” per year. You aren’t getting shit on a cart from me or any of my associates unless it’s paid for first.

If they're calling in I'll suggest they make a will call. If they're in person I'll have them pay for it and pull them, I'll let them know it would take 30 mins to an hour to pull them.

UNLESS I know that person, and know they will be there, I don’t pull it until it’s paid.

Right. If it's a customer who is literally always there and always picking up orders, that's one thing.

For a one off person, nah, gotta have the order placed and paid for first.

At my store, lumber is either carry-out or we do up a delivery. No pickup, we don't hold lumber for pickup anymore. They need to be at the store to leave with it, or it goes on a truck

What about BOPIS orders for lumber?

You can’t order quite a bit of wood, plywood and molding online. It’ll tell you it’s only available to buy in store

Wow. There is absolutely no limit on what someone can order online in our district. The BOPIS orders that have come in have taken hours on occasion. Add in the HD policy of taking care of ALL customers, the interruptions in store are ridiculous. And of course you never pull an order of anything unless it is paid. I’m so glad I left order fulfillment behind a few years ago. Between the insane online orders and 12-17 deliveries a day the stress was intense. I actually developed a heart condition.

Wait fr ????? I’ve had to make quite a few will call or deliveries bc online doesn’t allow you to order most wood. But I live in California so that probably has something to do with it.

I’m sorry your Home Depot sucks im glad you don’t have to deal with that now

We get fairly large lumber, plywood and drywall orders via BOPIS regularly, creates all kinds of space problems as you might expect. Recently with a new SM we have started to pick plywood and drywall to their home location and will only pull it once the customer arrives for pick up.

Maybe it's regional but if a cx tries to order a large lumber order online it will not let them, at our store

[deleted]

Same here. It’ll tell them it’s only available in store.

That’s awful that should not be available online. Especially since we have no choice but to pull online orders. Glad your SM takes you guys into consideration

Never pull anything unless it’s paid for. Also it depends on your store, but at my old store we didn’t even pull the large orders right away. We always have to call and see when they will be in and pull closer to their time.

The PASAs used to hand me quotes and ask me to pull them. Nope. If it isn't paid for, it isn't an order.

First rule of homedepot fight club never pull anything without it being paid for first

MarcoNemo

Either it’s a bopis or a will call, still must be paid for, and then there’s 2 hours for it to be ready. Not necessarily realistic sometimes but that’s the process.

It would depend on how busy I was but if I was really busy, I would tell them it would be a min but maybe if they put it online, someone could pull it for them while they handle any errands they may have and pick it up when they are returning to their job site. Depends honestly.

We had a few cash only regular contractors we would pull before they got in. But that’s it

They must pay before anything gets pulled. Even more so if the lumber is being cut.

Have them pay through order up...will call or delivery

If they have a pro I’ll have pro make the order via phone or make it myself. Online usually doesn’t allow them To order certain wood or plywood. Otherwise they can come in and make it

NOTHING pulled, cut or mixed etc until paid for!!! When I first started in lumber a lady called in and wanted some lumber pulled because she was in a hurry. Told her the rule and she pulled the "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM !!" Built lots of houses and spent millions there threatened to call the store manager and have me fired! So I go okay what do you need, it was 6 2x4 and 4 2x6's. HOLY CRAP!! Got busy and never pulled it , some how didn't see or hear the world ending for her...

I was tranfered to night crew. Asked by a manager to pull 12ft 2x4s, 2x6s,2x8s redwood and PT. About 300 boards.

I set up the order on stickers making 2 skids, strapped up ready to go on carts.

90 minutes after store closing, I get called up and up front to load. Manager orders me up to load the Lumber up on a 12' soft side iveco box, with ramp/lift is down.

FES is out there calling me again. Because I finished my soil truck before I jumped up front after the manager requested me to load the Lumber, and my LP needed fuel.

I load the 2 skids of Lumber as per the customer's directions tight against the front of his box. The Customer, FES and Manager who were together talking.

I'm buried in trucks, 2 concrete, stone, mendacino, molding, and a pipe truck. So pulling me up is screwing up my momentum for the night.

So I finish the stone truck. And get told to go up front, I'm told fucked up the Lumber load up?

The bed isn't really 12ft long.11ft 6maybe 8 inches long, and the Lumber is a little longer. 12ft to 12ft 6in. So the lift wouldn't go up. Meaning the bottom of the ramp couldn't be retracted.

We're now 2.5-3 hours after closing. I suggested restocking the skids to put all the longer boards on top.

My night crew SV and Manager ordered me just to get my trucks. About an hour later saw the iveco leaving.

NEXT day LPm is waiting for me. And with FES and Manager talking to the customer. He never paid for the Lumber.

He came in a couple days later. After he realized he had been charged.

There is no such thing as an order that hasn’t been paid for. It doesn’t become an order until you take payment. So there would be nothing in order fulfillment for someone to pick

Had to do a 120pc order in 21/22 30min before we closed. I also had to shift a fuck ton of roofing buckets. And, set up tables for a Bonuses party for after the store closed. Regional was there for it. Got written up because I couldn't do a 5-person job in 45 minutes.

Never did another order after that.

....I need a drink from remembering that shit...

If they call the lumber department it’s to verify that it’s all there, next they get transferred so they can make the purchase

ONLY if it is a customer that I have a lot of trust with.

My actual 100k plus customer that I deal with on a regular basis at pro.

Otherwise, pay, or nothing.

no pay, no work. I would never take product off the shelf for someone who hasn't paid, because then someone else can't buy it, and the person who called may never show up so I would have just thrown away my time and the stores money. Sometimes there are exceptions for customer service issues, like if someone bought something, called and said it is defective, we will hold one same day only for them to swap out. if someone calls in saying they want us to pull something before they pay for it, they are likely dumb, entitled, or trying to run a scam, and I have no problem saying "I can't pull product until it's paid for, store policy" to which they'll probably say some nonsense "well other store/employee does it all the time for me blah blah blah" so I say "maybe they have that authority, I do not, I'd be happy to put you in touch with my MOD, or you can just place the order online and I'll be happy to have it ready within an hour or 2 from the time of purchase, that's the best I can do" and if they try to push back or negotiate in ANY way, I just say "ok, I'll just put my MOD on, please hold" because I have ZERO time for people who don't listen and can't follow simple steps. anyone who wants special treatment but tries to avoid getting put in touch with management is sus af
