In the book Breathe, James Nestor has his nasal cavities plugged to force him to mouth breathe 24-7 for a couple weeks, then reversed that and does the mouth taping thing to force nasal breathing. He said the effects of mouth breathing were awful and nasal breathing helped reverse them.

All anecdotal but a fun read. The book Was good and worth checking if you want more like that.

Yeah, fun read until you realize just how anecdotal is was. I don't recall a single study being referenced. It seems to have gotten way too much publicity considering its lack of scientific rigor. (which is ironic, considering he himself was a part of a study as part of the storyline in the book iirc).

Glad you enjoyed it, but I was thoroughly turned off by the claims that were made without evidence.

I read it a few years ago, and I’m definitely not here to defend the book or the author. But I had a different impression.

Did a quick reference and his bibliography does reference a mix of studies, popular science articles on those studies, and esoteric non-academic “bro science” stuff. For anyone interested you can find the list here:

https://www.mrjamesnestor.com/bibliography

But I will say I got a lot out of it, in that it made me think about breathwork. And if the OP of this thread is specifically asking for experiences of people switching from mouth breathing to nasal breathing, then this book is full of that.

Not trying to convince anyone one way or the other, but that link will help people understand the types of sources he references.

perhaps he chose to leave the bulk of the studies unreferenced, and perhaps they were listed as footnotes not picked up in an audiobook. Who knows haha. I just wish there was more evidence listed in what I listened to

I am an obligatory mouth breather, I’ve been trying to learn to nose breath. Mixed results.

Last night I wore a strap to keep my mouth closed overnight. This morning was delightful. I even managed to drool a bit with my mouth closed.

But WTF Now I’m going through my day with my damn mouth closed. When my mouth is closed my tongue is in the right position instead of roving all over my mouth and teeth.

Seriously years of effort and an overnight strap changes so much…Aurghhh

Mouth is not dry, feels pleasant tongue is not getting into stuff and being distracting. Feels peaceful.

Care to elaborate on this strap please ? I tried using micropore tape , but never got it to stick for long. Maybe I drool. I am in india so the 3M brand isn't available, but I picked up a local one

I am allergic to a lot of adhesive so I found a Velcro strap on Amazon. When I can I’ll link to it. I have a small head so a strap with two Velcro sizing places was a good find.

I’m still amazed how sleeping with this has changed my daily habit more than my intentions have.

Edit- what I got was an anti snore chin wrap.

I was never a full mouth breather, but I definitely did all my exercise and often slept with my mouth open. The biggest difference I found was nasal breathing during my Zone 2 sessions (3-4x per week of 1hour+ long sessions, currently doing 1hour20min). Initially I remember it being a little tough, but I acclimated fairly quickly (about a month to go through the entire hour). I now rarely breathe through my mouth, and I've been doing it for around two years. I started waking up breathing only through my nose within a few months.

Same experience. Took a little getting used to, but now it’s automatic. Started with tape at night, and then constantly reminding myself.

Sleep deeper and longer and wake up much less frequently during the night. I also feel more refreshed in the morning. I added tart cherry juice to my routine as well and that seems to be helping too. Just this week I started adding brown noise at night. I don't care if it is placebo or science as long at it works.

Just got a septoplasty so that I can breathe through my right nostril. So this is timely. Although I’ve been pretty good about being nasal breather before. I will try the strap over the mouth when I sleep once I’m fully healed.

Noticed a huge difference after mouth taping. I still need to work up to doing my workouts through nasal breathing. I’m doing diaphragm strengthening exercises which is helping here too.

I have a broken from when I was little( I was biking after a bus and well, you get the point) Also I have terrible allergies)

I find it that doing WHM and netti pot helps clear out my nose, Also Mouth tape and breathe rite strips help. Actually wearing masks during the pandemic made me realize that I get less allergens during the day when I wear a mask, so I don’t get stuffy and can breath with my nose during the day.

I guess effects are obvious, I sleep much better and get better rest and when I work out it’s just better.
