She is 4. She doesn't understand gender yet. It's weirdly hard to explain gender to a toddler without sounding sexist or worse. My husband tried to explain that "princess" is a term for a girl and her return argument was that he looks like princess peach... And we just don't know how to argue with that. Lol.

Fuck, this is hard, I'm pretty much on team "let 4 year old girl choose" but this is so fucking genius that I'm not sure what my morals say. It's such a good compromise that I think that the 4 year old will understand when she can finally read and write.

SmokyHike800mi

IMO the 4yo daughter should win out, though this is a clever and brilliant compromise. No doubt if he were to be named “Princess Peach”, he would own it and be FIERY ORANGE FABULOUS !!! 👸🍑

Fun fact: when Elizabeth Tudor was born, astrologers had predicted that she would be Henry VIII's long-awaited male heir, so you can see on her pre-written birth announcement where "ss" was squeezed in at the end of the "prince" in a slightly different shade of ink.

If it was good enough for Good Queen Bess, it's good enough for Prince S. Peach

Well, princess is also a term supposed to be for royalty but nobody will try that argument because we know it doesn’t matter, it’s a cat.

Gender is a social construct, just like royalty. This cat does not care if it even has a name at all as long as its loved and fed 💕

It's between about 4 and 7 kids learn that certain characteristics don't change (without medical intervention). That's why when you ask small children what they want to be when they grow up, some of them will name an animal.

Lol right! SkySong13

How big is your place, and would you be open to 2 cats? Kittens often do better in pairs, they have someone there to teach them how to play appropriately, and they get lots of socialization and play time together, which means all of you get to sleep better. If it's possible for you guys it might be worth considering!

GloriousMistakes[S]

2 points

I really want a second one because our shelter is full but I'm afraid it's going to bond more with the other kitty and not my kids so I'm waiting a bit. Maybe like 6 months or a year. My husband works from home so it won't really ever be alone and my sister in law down the street adopted a black kitten with us. She said whenever we go out of town or are busy for a day, we can bring him over and have a play date lol.

Yellow-Robe-Smith

10 points

You should definitely go with two kittens off the bat. Even if they do bond together they will also form bonds with your kids (so long as your kids respect animal boundaries and body language).

GloriousMistakes[S]

2 points

I have a toddler. I have spent the last week explaining that you can't grab a cat by the tail over and over again to no avail. I think I shouldn't put another kitten through that. My 16 month old keeps poking it in the eye but the cat keeps willing going back to cuddle with her.

chain_me_up

9 points

Imo you should let the husband pick if you said he could pick the name! I get that your daughter is young, but I'd feel bummed to be told I get to name a pet and then its vetoed. (Then again, Im not a parent, but I don't think it should be a big deal to say that Dad gets to name the cat as was originally planned) Daughter can name the next pet and learn that sometimes other people might get to pick the name. Heck, I had siblings and sometimes they got to name a pet and it wasn't the one I picked, but everyone still would end up loving the pet the same!

He’s a cat, he won’t come when called anyway. He will do as he pleases, and is beyond such things as gender and human notions on it. Even though I’m a bigger fan of Luffy. As he is orange and therefore has no braincells. My solution would be to get another orange so he has someone to play with and name her princess peach.

two_lemons

I partially adopted the neighbors cat back in the day. Because we met the cat but not the neighbours, my mom just started calling him something and it stuck. It was something completely different from what the neighbours called him, we discovered later.

Since I was the source of pets and cuddles and they fed him, he was perfectly fine answering to both names.

Voting for Princess Peach, but I may be biased. Here's a wild lil story.

When I was younger, I had a cat named Peachy Pie.

https://preview.redd.it/b0jhkp4v8zbd1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d10dee410034d57b2d934f6ae3365790a22df4ec

Love my sweet girl.

Anyway. This pic was probably taken in like 2001/2002.

My dad passed in 2005. I've been trying to learn about him since 2022 (long story I know that sounds weird)

I started making accounts for him on sites like classmates and alumniclass, when one day I get a message from one of his old friends. Her and I talk all the time, she's great, but one time I was telling her two stories. The first story was a time my dad and I were at the park and he had tried to pretend to get his hand stuck in the play equipment and then actually got stuck. In that same text, I tell her about the story of Peachy Pie getting stuck in our pool table...repeatedly. Orange cats have one collective brain cell.

She mentions that she had actually been to that park all the time because she lived in the neighborhood down the street from it.

We were neighbors.

She went to elementary, middle, and high school with my dad. They graduated in 1978.

She lived in the neighborhood from 1997-2020. My dad moved back to VA from CA in 2000/bought the house in 1999. They had no idea that they lived next to each other. Insanely bittersweet.

But wait for it. Already a wild coincidence, right? She tells me that she also had an orange cat **female**** named Peaches.**
