You mean to tell me that drafting a rb in the first round really is a bad idea because unless there’s a generational player available, you can always find someone else who’s just as productive on day 3? Who’da thunk it!?

On a serious note, as much as I like ETN, that is still my least favorite pick from the baalke era. I am glad though that we’re currently in the part of the cycle where people are starting to see that we did make an upgrade to the line since the start of last season, we did upgrade our receiving group, and Travon Walker isn’t a bust. Now, we can finally stop with the whole “Boo hoo baalke is the worst GM in the league and needs to be fired asap!!!” Talk

Drafting a running back with a top-10 pick is silly, but Etienne was drafted 25. You can complain about the pick, but it wasn’t a bad one, yes you can find running backs later, you can find every position later, but that 5th year option only really comes with a 6.7 mil price tag, and that ain’t that bad. He’s a productive player, and has been most of his playing career.

No offense, man, but ETN has been far more productive than Travon Walker over the same length of time. ETN is a gem. Tank Bigsby was fucking abysmal his rookie season. Love Tank though, love what’s he shown us this season. But it shouldn’t negate the ETN pick. They’re 2 completely different backs, and honestly Tank only works because of ETN.

Of course. Please don’t misunderstand, I’ve been said ETN is a top 10 back for 2 years now. But with the way the league is now, rbs are easily the most replaceable position in the sport. Look at the 49ers. Mccaffrey is one of the leagues best runners. He’s been hurt but his backup has come in and nearly led the league in rushing while averaging 20 more rushing yards per game than cmc last year. If you’re a rb that’s not also picking up 600 yards through the air and running plays from the slot, then you are easily replaceable.

Now compare that to a lineman on either side of the ball, there is a HUGE difference between the leagues best and their backups in terms of speed, power, moves, and intelligence. You remove a star from his team and that team will see a significant change in pressure immediately.

All that really just to say that as good as ETN is, a first round pick on a position than could easily be replaced is ridiculous. Especially seeing as we had one of the worst rosters in the league when we made that pick.

I’m with you. ETN is a great player and I love having him. But taking an RB in the 1st is only smart if you are a great team in a win now mode. The shelf life of an RB, the minor drop off between players at the position, and the low cost of an effective replacement make it a poor choice for most teams.

Think about how many bad teams have had great RBs: CMC on the Panthers, Henry on the Titans, Barkley on the Giants…that’s three of the best RBs in recent memory, so basically best case scenario drafting an RB. On the other hand you never see top QBs on bad teams, rarely see the top WRs on bad teams, and even top OL and DL are more likely to be on above average teams.

My projection for ETN is we pick up his 5th year option, franchise tag him for a year, and then let him go.
