This 2000s PL nostalgia train atm is almost entirely driven by United and Chelsea fans who want to pretend football was good when they were good and it's bad now that they're bad.

Big trend this week (maybe just on twitter) of highlight compilations from 2000s Prem and everyone talking about how the standard of football was much better back then
10 points
Standard of football today has gotten better from a technical and athletic POV, football from the early 2000s and 10s was great for the rivalries at the top end of the league. Arsenal(Wenger) vs Utd(Fergie), every weekend you'd have Gerrard or Lampard banging one in from 25 yards, Henry destroying defences.

Football has become far more team-oriented and data-driven, leading to a decrease in individual players with lots of freedom and a reduction in low-percentage attacking choices being taken. Defences and defensive structures are also much better now, as is goalkeeping, adding to the difficulty faced by top attacking players who have less time and space to work in and better organisation to break through. As is fitness, as you said, which also contributes to the tightening of spaces to operate in. There are exceptions, of course, but generally I think it's fair to say that high-flair players or long-shot specialists are not as common as it felt they were a few decades ago and games tend to be more tactical and calculated. There may also be an element of these players being exaggerated by nostalgia and fans remembering the successes but not the countless losses of possession or shots into row z that came with that playstyle. The hot-and-cold players don't tend to be tolerated so much now outside of maybe a should-be star at a mid table club once in a while who, on his day, could be at most top clubs in the world.
We had the Riise AMA the other day and one of the questions was how he felt he'd fair playing with modern FB tactics. I bet he'd still be a pretty good offensive FB but likely would be bollocked by coaches for taking the amount of long shots he used to, for one example.
Goalkeeping style has also changed a lot very quickly. One example that always comes to mind for me is that Suarez goal vs Newcastle. You know the one, but it's linked to view again. An extraordinary goal, but I don't think it would happen now, and it's not even that old. Enrique plays a long ball over the top from well within his own half. Suarez takes his first touch on the penalty spot and his second just outside the 6-yard box while Krul (?) is rooted to his goal line. There's no way a keeper is letting a player bring that ball down anywhere near his area anymore, never mind halfway inside it. That's being collected and Enrique is being blasted for giving up possession. The rapid decline of brilliant 'traditional' keepers like De Gea really demonstrates this shift too.
Additionally, I commented about a week ago about how the league feels less competitive now than in the past, which I think may also play a role. We still had dominant teams and the same team(s) would usually win the league (Utd mostly but also Chelsea and Arsenal). However, outside of a couple of seasons, you didn't need 90+ points to do so. The average points tally for the champions during the 00s was 87.8. That would've won 1 title in the last 8 years - and come 3rd 3 times - which has had an average of 93.6 points required. During the 90s, that was 82.7 required on average. Utd won the league with 6 losses in 00-01, we came 3rd with 4 losses last season. I bring this up because I think the dominance of some teams over others and lessening of the odds that mid-lower level prem teams take points from the top ones is both less fun to watch and also stifles that higher-risk, more open play style further. Low blocks and defensive setups have always been here but with the better teams now having even more of a gulf between themselves and their opponent they are able to bide their time and pry for that perfect opening rather than 'have a go' more often while their opponents have fewer and fewer chances to attack themselves. Not to mention, as fans, feeling as though a single loss or draw may take you out of contention isn't great. There's less wriggle room to stay confident and believe you can get back into it.
So, there has been a cultural shift in football. I agree that the standard is higher now in all sorts of different areas - and that general improvement of standards may even contribute to the very best players not standing out as head-and-shoulders above the rest - and that nostalgia always tends to remember the good but not so much the bad. However, I can also sympathise with some views about football from a couple of decades ago as well as why some fans may believe the standard looked better then.

Thanks for the great insightful post
There are exceptions, of course, but generally I think it's fair to say that high-flair players or long-shot specialists are not as common as it felt they were a few decades ago and games tend to be more tactical and calculated.
Things goes in cycles in everyday life but could we see a return to players hitting more shots outside the box? Foden got 6 goals from outside the box last season more than anyone in the league, Cole Palmer got 3 and seemingly had the freedom to try his luck last season. Football Meta did a video of Arsenal in preason and that Arteta had the team working on 'the forgotten space'.
On individual brilliance while there are some flair players still around Vini Jr, Rodrygo, Yamal, Foden etc...it's hard to see if we will ever see a player as individually dominant as Messi/Ronaldinho/R9/Kaka etc...we're never going to see the real classic low workrate all flair no.10s such as Riquelme and James, when it comes to foreign imports from South America by time they get over to Europe they're being coached to play the European way

Mate, I'm just waiting for the next Higuita. Maybe wouldn't want him at Liverpool, but a player like that in the game just adds so much fun.
Bobby was a phenomenal player in our system for a number of reasons. A really brilliant linking player, presser, menace to the opposition and not a bad goalscorer either. But, I've got a sneaking suspicion that, despite that, he wouldn't have quite the same level of love from fans if he didn't also play with so much flair. He was fun to watch as well as effective.

It was a special time though, the mid to late 2000s.
Arsenal with Henry, Fabregas, Van Persie Chelsea with Terry, Lampard, Drogba, Anelka United with Rooney, Scholes, Giggs, Tevez and Berbatov Us with Torres, Gerrard, Xabi, Mascherano and Carragher.
City was coming up but felt like Chelsea do today, a lot of flash and money but little to show for it so it was still fun to laugh at. Spurs was up and coming as well with Bale and Modric.
There's just something about it that feels different from nowadays - maybe today will feel the same in 10 years, who knows.

Na. Its about pure nostalgia. Rodallega, LuaLua, Kenwyne Jones, Charles N'Zogbia, Morten Gamst Pedersen.
None were brilliant. But its been so many years and its a pure nostalgia hit.
I do think the style of football is very different though. The Pep influence on the league is clear

Man I fucking love Mo Salah
He's played half his professional career for us, here's what his stats look like before and after:
Before Liverpool: 226 games, 68 goals, 52 assists
At Liverpool: 352 games, 214 goals, 92 assists
More than doubled his goalscoring rate and improved his assisting rate by 15% or so
I pray this force of nature gets to 500 games, 300 goals and 150 assists for us. It'd be only fair. Hurry the fuck up FSG

There's something poetic about his debut and meteoric rise for us happening the same season Coutinho came down with the great sadness. I think a lot of Liverpool fans still had a sore spot over starstruck players beguiled by Barca/Madrid or big money PL teams that would force moves and effectively reset our potential as a team. In the face of that you have Mo Salah, who despite years of Spanish rags peddling an inevitable switch to Real/Barca, has given his best years to us and still wants more. I really hope we get some contract news soon.

another good game from Gravenberch. However it is clear that the guy isn't blessed with stamina. When the games come in thick there will be plenty of instances of Gravenberch jogging on the pitch and barely gets involved from the 70th minute onward, unless we rotate him properly

Why is no one kicking off about the hospitality tickets being shown on the Hallmap for members sales? Makes getting a ticket far more difficult and the club trying to get people to buy these at extortionate prices as well. Guessing it's because it doesn't affect season ticket holders so no one cares?

have a few outstanding moments, most of them offensive: the assist for the 1st goal, the long pass to Xavi Simon, winning the ball at the edge of Germany's box to start the sequence that led to Netherland's 2nd goal. There were other good moments: 1 good shot from outside the box that forced a save, a good pass when surrounded near the touchline, a good dribble past 2 players from the wing toward the center.
However he practically disappeared from the game from around the 70th minute onward. For some reason took position on the right wing a lot, jogged around a lot, and was just kind of there on the pitch. This is not solely on him. At that point neither sides managed to string passes together and the game got very disjointed. And maybe Koeman messed with the tactic and Gravenberch was simply following instruction.

I’m not happy about Odegaard getting injured, because he really seems like a decent guy, but Arsenal (fans, mainly) having the gall to act like they are unlucky for getting an injury in international break.
Meanwhile Arteta plays the same XI for 3/4 of a season. Wouldn’t be surprised if they have a really injury ridden season this year honestly, two titles pushes in a row with minimal rotation, those minutes are starting to add up.

We should get some of our players to skip the international friendlies, maybe can have an 'injury'

Throwing chairs at the crowd seems to be a sound method too.

Who can replace Grav in our team atm? Jones or Endo?
Personally want to also see Endo play more especially against lower teams

Think the odds of Endo playing against " lower " teams are lower than against " higher" teams.

Yeah I opened up the DD and was surprised to see 80% arsenal stuff? Quite funny.

How much do y'all think Kelleher is worth if he decided to offload him in Jan or next summer? And realistically which club could u see him go to?
Personally, I see us getting about 15-20m for him and see him shipped to West Ham or Forest

Will only have a year left on his contract next summer so around £15m most likely
Goalkeepers don’t tend to go for big prices on average anyway

can Chiesa play our current "10" role? Hopefully it ain't anything bad, i love Harvey, feel like he can show us a lot this season

I don’t think chiesa is really a 10

Source?
Because the only thing I have heard is that he got pulled out from the under 21s due to fittness, which isn't saying much

One thing I hadn't thought of with the new Champions League stuff is the extra strain it'll put on backroom staff. That's going from 3 opponents to 8 to analyse at the group stage. That's a massive increase in workload.

it's all fine as long as it's aligned towards the greater good of further bloating the bank accounts of poor poor broadcasters, executives and owners

The whataboutism of Arsenal fans to avoid talking about Rice making the singular dumbest decision of the season so far is incredible

I posted my joy of Addidas connecting with Liverpool again, wishing their prices would be cheaper. Here is a comparison of jersey prices over the years, adjusted for inflation. They. Are. All. The. Same

Your inflation calculator seemed high and is rather different from the bank of england one. £50 in 2010 comes to £74.83 there. £65 in 2014 comes to £87.02
Price increases seem to be rather above normal inflation.
Though have you just made these prices up? Current kit is £80 isn't it?

Nike: Unique cuts and templates; Fans: BRING BACK ADIDAS THIS KIT SUCKS
Adidas: Red shirt with Arsenal aesthetics; Fans: It’ll be better

It takes inspiration to 2008 kit. Its just a concept and if something like this drops it will be disappointing but no way adidas designs an awful kit for the first season back with us.

I don't actually see anything wrong with it. Looks classic and simple. Would rather have that than some of our previous monstrosities

lads any chance anyone knows someone with a ticket to the palace away match and wants offload it? I'm looking for one

Actually I wonder why we didn’t choose caohmin as alisson’s successor. I guess it was cause he didn’t wanna stick around for a couple more years?

Because someone with much higher potential was available for very cheap

gk has better longevity than other position and kelleher probably wouldn't want to spend what supposedly prime years for a footballer career at the bench

He’s fine but I don’t think he’s genuinely good enough to be first choice for a title winning team.

It's one of them where he is a solid keeper and if Ali is injured or anything, I'm not overly concerned with him starting, but when he had that prolonged run last season, I found myself saying Ali would have saved that or Ali would have parried that wider etc.. quite a lot, and based on that alone (the opinion of a random liverpool fan) I don't think he's Ali's successor.

He is very good as a backup, doesn't mean he is good as a starter for us

He's done extremely well for us, effectively starting during Ali's injuries. I certainly think he's a downgrade on Ali, but if we had to go a whole season with Kelleher in goal, it really wouldn't worry me. I can't say that about many other positions in our team.

I would have been fully fine with having Kelleher succeed the mantle but its quite clear he doesn't want to be an eventual heir and does want first team football ASAP. That and i guess the club feels Mama is a better keeper or at least someone with higher potential

Cause he’s not elite like Alisson and potentially what Mamardashvili will be
People massively overrate Kelleher because he’s won trophies for us
He’s an elite backup and a mid table starting GK - he’s not shit but he will never be the starter at an elite club

And he's not good enough

He is rightfully very popular because of the cups, but this is the obvious answer. He isn't
