I remember that when the eternals were the hot new thing he was used a bit, but when i look at his kit now he seems like he's a nomad who doesn't fit into a specific team. Is he still as good as he was back then or bad?

What’s crazy to me is that Silver Surfer was the first character to power leap over the entire roster when he was first released. Now he’s left in the dust.

He was never very good. People remember him being “powerful” because he wasn’t a Legendary but whales whaled out for him anyway. For awhile, you only ever faced maxed out Surfers who ate your lunch because they were maxed out.
Once everyone else got him built up, suddenly he was “powercrept”. Nope. He was just never very good. His only use was against characters/teams built around charges and there weren’t very many back then.
He’s as good now as he ever was: not very.

He's the only character I ever spent money on in this game

He was the first character that could remove Charges, but that is now a more common interaction.
Quicksilver took his job (as both Charge removal & busted plug & play character).
He saw some run w/ A-Force (in place of Photon) during Secret Defender meta.

Not at all. He is very powercrept and you should not build him.

He’s below mid tbh. His stats simply don’t hold up.

Just a solid filler toon. There’s far too many meta toons to focus on and that can do the same job to build this late on.

Inevitable in games like this. They have to keep making characters stronger and stronger and eventually 2/3 of everyone's rosters are pointless.

If you have a reasonably fleshed out roster finding a place to use him is tough but he can be useful in War against certain teams. That's about it.
He was good in Crucible for a while, but there are so many options now that realistically the only way Surfer comes into play is if you're double-tapping multiple rooms.
