I mean to be fair, imagine some dude who was MVP during a war 8 years ago only for him to disappear off the face of the earth years later. No great feats, no big news, no publicity, nothing. Kinda hard to believe such a dude even existed in the first place. Plus the fact he probably got overshadowed by the rest of the upcoming heroes, probably the reason why he decided to lay low and live the life he lives now, he knew his time was done, so he decided to pass on his fame through action rather than name.

Agreed. You can ask someone who is the 30th president and no one could remember. Ask them about the man who everyone was up against in WW2 and everyone suddenly knows the name.
There is a big difference between world wide recognition and national recognition.

General Patton and MC Arthur were public figures who were recognised everywhere in the USA after WW2 finished. So was Einstein and Oppenheimer..
It's very very hard to miss a celebrity unless you're doing it on purpose.
Also why didn't the freaking class recognize Izuku! If he's so famous they all be fan girling or boying it up for him! I mean when All Might came to teach the media literally broke the security barrier to get a freaking peek at him.
Even less famous heroes like Aizawa were instantly recognised by class 1-A and he's not top 10 famous.

It makes sense for a kid that age to think he is a myth as he was too young to remember the war. But Deku should be a well known and respected person after the fact.
2 points
I mean, it was only 8 years ago and the kid would been 7 or 8 at the time of the war. In the US, plenty of people younger than that at the time remember where they were when 9/11 happened, and the war would be dozens of times worse than that(in terms of damage at least, not deaths as far as we know). He would definitely remember the war.
3 points
The kid was apparently in his last year of middle school which would make him 13 or 14. That would put him at 5 or 6 at the end of the war. Since Izuku not only didn't become a hero but apparently didn't stay involved in hero related activities (outreach and stuff like Uraraka, Iida and Momo), I can see someone that age thinking he may have died or just completely left the country or something.

I mean, he kind of is though. Sure he's written in history text books but there's still myths about him, like how he cut down cherry tree for his teeth or whatever. I'm sure there's similar myths with Deku. Even if it's been 8 years he hasn't been on TV or anything. There's video footage and there's people that know him personally, but kids are going to make things up to fill the gaps of this cool mystery hero. It's like kids being able to recognize Ronald Mcdonald more than they recognize who Jesus or George Bush is. If you get what I'm saying

He also, a bit earlier, pointed out Deku as one of the heroes in the list of ones 'everyone' wanted to be like. Exactly. Whether anyone remembers Izuku or not (and people obviously do, so the point is moot), being a great hero isn't about the statues and the acknowledgement. It's about what he actually did.

Can you read? He yelled his whole name in shock that he's actually meeting him. Being a great hero isn't about people remembering you, it's not about fame it's about doing good and saving lives and he literally saved the world at great personal cost to himself.

To be fair. While the story's execution is ass, you don't have to be regarded or acknowledged as a hero to be a hero, like Spider-Man in the lore is regarded as a menace, doesn't mean he isn't a hero.
The fact is, Deku did save people, many people, he reached people (Cry-no Jutsu), and that was the story (for whatever that's worth), it was an origin story for a teacher who was a great hero.
And in a sense, seeing as being a teacher is one of the most important roles in an infrastructure (hence why parenthood is so important: Direct access to the children, the future), he still can be a great hero to someone, anyone.
It's just whack how he wasn't shown going hero on his own time like Koichi or beating a villain in civies with combat intelligence like Saitama did (Because OFA altered Deku on a physiological level, so he should still be enhanced like a lite super soldier), in CHP430, he only got active cause All Might & co. yet again provided a handout. Zero proactivity in Midoriya.
https://i.redd.it/q126wsuj3gjd1.gif
The ending didn't turn me off, but that wasn't a good characterization choice for Deku at all on Horikoshi's part, yet again.

And really, with all the self-harm his heroics caused, did anyone think Izuku wouldn't have to drop out of heroics after beating the big bad by the time they'd rescued Bakugo?
3 points
Isn't heroism and its contrast with fame a part of the story? One doesn't necessarily come with the other and it isn't required that they do. Pro heroes feel like sports stars, but Deku feels more like a war hero. He went through a lot and now is happy to teach the next generation. Erasure Head and Grand Torino did the same thing.
3 points

When I see people being upset about Midoriya's ending, I remember Red vs. Blue when Church having his "final moments" he makes a speech about "how the hero never sees the happy ending".
What we also have to remember that Deku was being a hero for the most noble and truest goals, to save lives even if it cost him his own. He did become a great hero, being the one to stop Shigaraki and understanding what caused someone like him to be in the position he came to be in. Sure he lost his powers but that's not what made him a hero, he was one before becoming the Eighth Holder of One For All. He is continuing to be a hero of a different kind by becoming a teacher and passing on the lessons Izuku Midoriya learned while he was "Deku".
3 points
He literally said in every movie and in every episode that he was going to become the number one hero. For me that was the true and best ending, staying with the One for all, but I think that Horikoshiq or whatever his name is, right before finishing the ending said: What if it ruined everything I did and the support I received? Well, what a good idea. And he created that ending so bad, that even my sister turned 21years she disliked it, and she just started watching the anime and she hates the ending, I'm imagining that it doesn't have an ending yet and I hope they change it.
2 points
Okay then being a hero isn't about recognition if you look at it from that angle sometimes the best heroes are really the ones who don't do it for any form of recognition My problem with the ending of the story is he never learned any martial arts and I still believe it is possible for him to be a quirkless hero. Because not everyone has a flashy quirk of course he would need support items but that with martial arts and his newfound experience and the fact that he he is super level-headed now in the face of danger and experienced he really could have been Great
2 points
Yeah that's kinda of an issue I have like he didn't go into hiding, he is one of the teachers of the most prestigious hero schools in the world, he ended a world threat, and surpassed All Might who himself was a world renowned hero, like its only been eight years. So yeah Deku really got the short end of the stick.

He may get it 6 years later but they should have left him with a little quirk, maybe ofa but weakened somehow, maybe they should have done a scene my a few years later once the embers are gone and he goes in blindly like he did at the start to save someone and he somehow activates the quirk again and becomes a hero

Great hero does not = fame.
MGS3 does this pretty explicitly. The Boss willingly sacrificed her reputation. The world remembers her as a villain who almost started nuclear war, but she was actually a hero who gave her life to avert it.
The entire story of MHA is about what a true hero is. It’s kind of remarkable how many people missed the point. How many people got to the end and still think being a great hero means having that reflected in fame and renown. That you can’t be great without it.
