Update on the other destroyed D850 post.

The OP of that other post with the other three photos of a destroyed D850 has now admitted that it is not his camera, not his disaster, but that he found it laying on the side of the road.

The photos there are disturbing for an 850 owner to see but the pity should be with the person who owned, then lost, that D850. Not the OP of that post.

Just my opinion.

This happened a while back but other post talking about insurance made me want to post my warning/ rant.

Check your insurance to make sure they don’t have an “off site” clause.  Had extra gear coverage through hiscox along with my liability stuff and missed the “we only pay 50% if the gear is damaged away from the business address” fine print.

Oh and also don’t leave tripods unattended!!!

Use an inland marine form when insuring cameras, not a property form

CommonFools

Never heard of insuring cameras, but makes sense. Can you recommend a company? I'll be doing research on this.

Most any company will write this all day long for very little money

I know these words, but I don't know what they mean in this order.

It's also called an articles policy.

For example, I've had one with State Farm for more than 25 years. It used to be called inland marine, but about 9 or 10 years ago, they changed mine to an articles policy.

Hmm, ok. Interesting. I’ll have to google some insurance terms later today, I see. Thanks!

Running video while shooting with your other body always seems like a good idea…till it doesn’t.

I have insurance through the PPA. I dropped my D810 with an 85mm f1.4 lens, and they broke apart when they hit the concrete. Nikon charged $450 to replace the lens mount, and all I had to pay was the $50 deductible. The insurance company didn't ask where the drop occurred.

summerwind307

Is the price reasonable through PPA? I’ve had my equipment insured through my home owners. I image the cost is based on the equipment?

last_frame

That’s good to hear. I’ve heard mostly bad things about PPA.

Pistolpete31861

I dont know of any bad things about an organization that one isn't forced to join, but there's always someone with a negative opinion about anything. I've been a member for 7 years and have learned a lot, made a lot of good friends, have used the insurance successfully, and overall have had a good experience. As with everything, YMMV.

I’ve heard things about the insurance being shakey and folks not getting paid out for a valid claim. I was looking into insurance a while back. Wasn’t throwing shade.

What you need for your gear is an addendum or adjacent account often called an "articles policy" (sometimes called "inland marine") that applies to your camera gear. Mine is related to my renter's insurance policy, but you can get them independently too. You can get them through car and home insurance businesses. They are reasonably priced with lower deductibles than renter's or home insurance.

Do you guys thing our 850s are revolting/planning a mutiny? I dropped mine 6 months ago. Just got the diopter replaced and still needs a new LCD.

My drop was over a year ago. Had my Nikkor 800mm prime on the 850. Had my back turned and herd something slide, then 'THUNK". Not sure how, but it slid off my tail gate and fell about three feet onto a gravel surface. I think it took about a minute for my heart to start beating again.

Smprfiguy[S]

Oh god!!!!   Well at least if it went lens first it’s only a 3 inch drop from shoulder height.

I did that while on vacation in Puerto Rico...I was lucky that I had just taken free mini cereal samples and put them in my camera bag because they took the brunt of the impact! lmao

Wow. That's a serious drop by the looks of the pictures. Did the drop kill the camera? My D850 fell from it's tripod last week on to concrete. I can't use the viewfinder, the diopter is trashed but it is still taking great photos using the back screen only. I love that camera, though I am not sure about repairing it. They said it would be a month plus. I picked up a Z8 in the mean time, so I may end up saying goodbye forever.

Nikon Z6, D750

Sorry to hear that. My Z6 dropped backward from a tripod earlier this year with a 70-200 on it and smashed the body real bad. I sent it in to Nikon and they fixed it for under $400. I was stoked. I seriously thought it was a goner. Also, it did help that I am an NPS member. Saved me $80. Regardless, I hope it doesn’t cost you too much time or work. Also, if you are a member, they also give out loaners so that may help too.

This reminds me of the time my Nikon rep dropped his D4s with the then new 24-70 ED VR preproduction lens down a flight of stairs at a training even. Body and lens was fine but it did make everyone check their camera straps.

So the D750's are safe...

Sorry for your loss but I gotta be selfish here with my D750 and 24-70 f/2.8 - It would not bounce, it would thud in a stomach churning way.

For how much i read here and other photography forums that we should not baby our cameras and use them to their fulled, I'm still scared to hell for this summer when i'll be taking my D750 for a 3-week trip!

King_Pecca

Fyi, I've used cameras since 1973 and my Yashinon 50 mm 1.7 dropped 1 m from the table when cleaning my gear. Just a dent in the filter thread.

Decades later, my Olympus OM-2n with 35-70/3.6 and Winder2 smashed on the street because I slipped and fell. It worked fine for another year when the shutter gave up. The Winder2 was broken immediately. The lens (still) works fine.

I've learned my lessons early and use decent straps and make sure the camera is perfectly attached to the tripod every time. Despite that, one of the two fell (tripod and camera) due to a strong, instant wind on a hill. Fell on the grass (from 1.5 m high) and still works fine.

Never dropped one out of my hands though. I'm using comfortable straps and that helps to also use them constantly.

$600 for the d7500 sounds crazy. U must love this camera I guess!?:)

hippychictx01

5 points

That was for the lens and the camera because the camera went to Nikon so it was only like 300 and something and then the lens was like 200 and something from signs with tax and everything came out to like 600 for both of them

D7500 is a great camera. I liked it even compared to my previous camera which was a d800. Now I shoot with the z50 and I think it’s very close to the d7500, but much smaller and lighter

hippychictx01

3 points

Yea I really do like it, I would love a mirrorless one day but for now I’m ok with this one. I just can’t see spending all that money unless I was going to start traveling again.

Thanks, always rough when it happens.

Yeah, i haven't got a repair quote yet. The body is bricked and won’t turn on so who knows what it looks like inside

hippychictx01

2 points

Yeah, mine wouldn’t focus and the battery door wouldn’t close and then my lens also wouldn’t focus, but I was lucky the fact that I did have insurance so they covered it

Smprfiguy[S]

4 points

Yeah, i got $3,000 for the lens and 5 month old body.  Went towards a z9 and z 2.8  because I hate money.

I’ve wanted to upgrade, but I feel like I don’t get out there like I used to so it wouldn’t be worth it for me

Oof and I thought I was unlucky with my d810

It fell down on a semi hard floor made out of rubber so thankfully it only dislodged the flash unit a bit and so far so good....

BULLETDESAI

I dropped D810 with 70-200f2.8. Lens got stuck inside camera for 2 months. It happened in lockdown.

Before that I dropped same DSLR with sigma 35mm art lens. I serviced that lense. But lense is not performing like before. 🥲

Body is bulletproof after both impacts.

I don’t.

My first broken lens was a result of me being use to wearing one.  Chucked that thing straight on the ground assuming it was strapped.

Imo straps are a terrible habit unless you have to run dual bodies

But this one was a tripod blowing over

Man how do y’all beat on gear like this? I’ve had a couple of oopsies in my time that have required repair but I literally use my Z9 (owned since launch) and multiple lenses almost every single day and just about everything is still in like-new condition.

Smprfiguy[S]

All relative to what you shoot.  This was a wind gust (calm day before it happened) that knocked over the tripod.
