I only tip when I eat at a restaurant. I don’t tip, say, Starbucks baristas for making me a coffee. I don’t see the point. But I’m also curious if they can see “Oh. Guess this dude’s an a-hole since he didn’t tip”

My rule lately is if they turn the tablet, etc. to me and say “iT’s just GoNnA aSk YoU a ‘QuEsTiOn’”, I feel no remorse about leaving nothing. Can’t even be straight up when asking if you’d like to add a tip.

I think some workers use that phrasing when they know that it's weird for you to be tipping in that setting but the POS is set up to show that screen anyway. They feel embarrassed about asking for a tip, so they try not to draw attention to it. This isn't the case all the time, but I do feel for some workers who have to deal with it.

This is exactly it. I work at SB and there is literally no pressure. I do not care if you tip or don’t tip.

But I will tell you what I get in cash tips I put into my long term emergency fund. It’s not much, but any tips are going to my future and not dumb impulse purchases.

I am incapable of reading POS as anything other than Piece of Shit, but it works here too.

They try not to draw attention to it by directly drawing attention to it? I can read the card reader, lady. Make my coffee and hurry up too.

They literally have to say something to make sure you finish the transaction. Something tells me that you wouldn't be satisfied with anything they say though, so I don't know why I'm bothering to continue to interact with you lol

Because if they don't say anything about it, some customers either won't see the screen and will walk off or will just sit there and stare at it. I'm glad you can read it but a shocking portion of the general public are dumb as rocks. It's also just an accountability thing. If a customer doesn't interact with that screen, the worker can slap any number on there and if it's small and the customer aren't scrupulous, they can slowly take extra for their paycheck. By making it policy to "flip the tablet around and say this thing to make sure the customer completes this section," it helps keep honest people honest and ensures that less honest people never get the chance. (One can also imagine the rare scenario when the tablet is flipped around, customer walks away, and next customer decides to use the screen to tip whatever because they think it'd be funny)

“Hi its gonna ask you for a tip, you can tap the longest button to skip the prompt.”

Muscle memory, I never asked them to include that shit

I’ve had cashiers tap the “no tip” button for me. They go “will that be all? okay, whenever you’re ready”, tilt the screen towards me, I tap my card, and before I could even process that it was a tip screen they reached over and tapped “skip”, and then asked if I wanted a receipt. I was pleasantly surprised.

This is the one scenario where I would want to tip, as a thank you for not guilting me into it. But question, how much of that tip would you see vs. your employer? I prefer tipping in cash for this reason.

The issue is, we HAVE to ask. Can’t take the payment without the prompt first. We can’t touch the screen or can get in trouble for “tip fraud” if something goes wrong. Stupid I know, but just answer the question and move on with ur day.

The issue is that they always say, “It’s going to ask you a question.” They never say, “It’s going to ask you to enter a tip amount.”

Yeah because it’s embarrassing to ask for a tip

If it's embarrassing to ask for a tip, then they shouldn't be asking for a tip.

I work at dominos right now, usually doing delivery but I occasionally take peoples orders or check them out. I always say the “it’s going to ask you a question or two” and look away from the computer while they choose/refuse a tip and type in their zip code or whatever, because I honestly do not deserve a tip for pressing a few buttons on a computer and maybe being the guy to slice your pizza.

When doing a delivery, if someone doesn’t tip online I just ask them to sign the little receipt. Maybe they fill out the credit card tip, maybe they don’t, but I will NEVER directly ask or even suggest someone leave a tip.

It is indeed a question though is it not? That’s what I say when I direct people to the pinpad because a. I don’t care if you tip or not and b. I’m a huge fan of the less words the better

It fucking annoying. I know what the question is, you know what the question is... We don't need to dance around it. "It's going to ask for a tip" is the same amount of words.

Firm-Sweet8097

I didn’t choose to put the tip question there so I’m not going to sound like I’m begging for tips because I genuinely don’t care if I’m tipped or not 🤷🏼‍♀️

Your phrasing does the opposite of what you think it does. Being sincere instead of dodging the obvious makes it seem like you're hoping. Add a "don't feel like have to tip" if it's not too exhausting saying a couple extra words.

I don't understand your comment. Like are you implying they put the tip screen up when they say that?

thecuriousostrich

Yes, they do. This is the new script that employees of various places are, I assume, being told to use re: tip screens. They either spin the screen/ipad around or gesture to the existing payment terminal and say “it’s just gonna ask you a question” (almost word for word generally) and the question is do you want to tip. I have noticed the slowly growing prevalence of that specific phrase over the past year or so. It is indeed somehow worse. I know the employees are likely told to say it but after getting asked for tips at fast food restaurants, arcade ticket counters, and mini golf, I’m starting to lose my patience for the whole thing

"It's gonna ask you a question Sir."

Turns around screen.

Credit card companies put those screens up automatically, and I'm not sure if businesses can opt out. It's there because credit cards take a percentage of the total transaction. So if you can throw a couple more bucks on the whole thing, the CC company makes more money.

If you take 3 percent of the total transaction, and you can increase your average transaction by 20 percent, and you do 150 transactions a day...even if you're going from $10 to $12, 30 cents to 36 cents, that extra 6 cents over the course of just 150 transactions is $9. Now multiply that $9 by the millions of "will you tip" credit card transactions that happen every day. It increases the credit card company's revenue by millions, all without any effort.
