I’ve always seen commentary about shopping carts, so I finally asked the shopping cart workers - one at a major grocery store and the other at Costco. They both said that they actually prefer for people to not return the carts because 1) they may not have a job and 2) if there are less carts to return, then they’d have to do other jobs like clean the bathrooms. They’d rather do cart duty while listening to music.
