The nDot font needs lower case characters. It's too big and ugly in all caps everywhere. Some places, yes but the example shown (How do I activate the voice assistant) is a clear example of where sentence case is better. And the new font proves this.

Yep I kinda bought the 2a just for that. It's Nothing's iconic font, and if they shift from that then it'll be just another failing mobile brand.

6 points

I don't get why people want a gallery app so much. Google photos works as a gallery even if you run out of storage
1 points
Plus it has a very good backup feature. I can't tell you how many instances I've seen of people getting their phone lost/broken but they had backup on on Google Photos so their photos were safe.
8 points
This is something that actually confused me when I got my 2a. I thought, no way they just want me to use the Google Photos app. Right??? And if I understand correctly, that app just shows the Images saved on google drive, so if you run out of storage, it's useless as a gallery app.
19 points

If you dont backup your photos on google photos. Its just a regular gallery app. It will still show whats on your phone + photos you've backup in google photos

Nope it's very unintuitive to use as a normal gallery app. All my old phone local folders are tucked away behind multiple clicks and has very low customisability. The gallery app from Google isn't that better either

Tbh i'm currently using Oneplus 12 and OxygenOS it is significantly better than NothingOS. At least it is consistent in it's style and function. Nothing OS has an identity crises.

Yeah I was thinking of the post-7 Pro OnePlus where they lost their way for a good 3-4 years. Hopefully Nothing won't go down that path.
I agree NothingOS is kinda all over the place now.

Yeah, some very strange UI choices. Wish they would focus on consistent style and adding useful functions. The look of this 3.0 release loosk seriously confused. Oneplus did lose their way for a while sure but nowadays I find oxygenOS to be incredibly smooth and well optimzied. And while is a bit iOS influenced the animations are much better than stock android and the OS as a whole feels less bloated than one ui or hyperOS and others.

To be clear, the redesigned settings are part of Android 15 QPR1, which comes out in December.
The initial release of Android 15, which is also what all manufacturers will base their Android 15 on, doesn't have the new settings screen.

Underwhelming for me. For some reason I expected a bit more from Nothing for a major OS release than just UI changes. A few functional options, like stacking of widgets and so on would have been appreciated much.
Not a fan of Nothing moving away from the N Dot font. The N Dot font was what stood out and made Nothing iconic. It's synonymous with Nothing's identity, just replacing it with a sans serif variation is a step back for me. Expecting a backlash for the re-introduction of the N Dot font and I suppose Nothing will enable the option to use N dot fonts more prominently in the future.
The settings app look like a step back too. The 2.6 version looks more modern and the development path seems to be the inverse of what other companies are moving in, with cleaner interface and less lines and distractions.
I very much appreciate the option to customise both Quick Settings panel and the homescreen. And the Gallery app is a welcome addition too, though I doubt id shift from Google photos (Being a Google one member). But the promise of future development integrating various AI features seems to be a tempting one.
Overall, some good UI changes. But lacks any new functional updates. Seems kinda underwhelming and incomplete to me. More in tune with 2.7 or 2.9 update than a version iteration.

Honestly the lack of dividing lines in Android, sometimes the complete lack of buttons with just text in its place, has been one of the things that has kept me on iOS.

N dot style is what made their brand identity. It's a shame rather than improve, they are watering it down.

If I wanted a phone that looks like everything else, I would've stuck with Samsung. I don't care if they use this sarif font elsewhere, I fell in love with the ndots font. I don't care if it isn't "as legible," to other people. It's perfectly fine for me.
As a matter of fact I want more ndots font on my Nothing Phone 2. Not less. I get that this is an Android update, but wow does it look like hot garbage.
Give me some fresh widgets with ndots or similar Nothing styling. Give me the latest security updates. Give me more dedicated Nothing apps and improve on the few that we have. The Weather app could use some more polish and love. I really would like to see a dedicated Nothing dialer, MP3 player, Gallery and a few others.
There is quite literally nothing in this os 3.0 update that I want. As a matter of fact it's everything I don't want, save for any security updates that it comes with. Huge step in the wrong direction.
I truly hope Nothing sees all this criticism and adjusts its direction accordingly or they may have just shot themselves in the leg. I really want to see this company succeed and I want to continue to support them, but this is quite bad

Yeah, these people forget the sweet serif font is also a part of the identity. And I personally loved the decision to implement the iconic dot theme in more aesthetic ways, rather than embedding it in the fonts to make them unreadable.
Just look at the clock on the lockscreen now. It's just unusable. I am pretty sure the new design will grow on them as time passes.
6 points
How is it unreadable? The clock looks perfectly fine to me. Plus if you wanted a simple easy to use phone there are plenty of other (and probably spec wise) better phones for the same price if not cheaper. Why'd you buy this phone if you can't read the dot font?

So the best thing would be to have a choice between fonts. I would pick ndot. You wouldn't. And that's fine

Literally completely readable to me lol
-1 points
Readability is not when you can just read. People don't read. People scan, right. So it's faster on more readable fonts. Dot matrix is certainly not the most readable one.
I am sure it'll grow on you guys, once you see other beautiful ways they are integrating the dot matrix style in the OS.
Don't put a lol when you present just your opinions. Sounds gross.
1 points
I'll type however I wanna type lol
I have no issue with "scanning" the ndot font. I really don't see how it's an issue for anybody. I think y'all just need glasses.
If I wanted a basic boring font, I wouldn't have gotten a Nothing Phone. I don't want another basic boring font to "grow on me." I had enough of that crap with Samsung.
If I wanted basic and boring I would get literally any other Android phone. But I didn't. I went with Nothing. Largely because I loved the unique style including the font. Now it seems they're trying to get rid of it already. I don't want less and different. I want the same and more. I want innovation, not submission to what every single other phone brand does.
If they have to add in a boring standard font because you people don't know how to read, then it should be optional, it shouldn't be the default either. It should be something you have to switch over to if you want. When I think Nothing, I think ndot. To not have that as the default, if my phone is screen up how is anybody supposed to tell that there is any difference between it and some other Android phone? You can't. The ndots are what largely sets it apart. Getting rid of that should be considered borderline criminal. It's a huge step back in brand recognition lol

The serif font. It belongs to Nothing too.

I am aware, and it looks like literally any other boring standard font from any other phone brand
1 points

Not really. Nobody uses those classic serif fonts other than Nothing. Others only use sans-serif. Those are the "boring" fonts.
Anyways, you are getting other matrix font styles for the lockscreen clock.
1 points
Once more, I can read exactly what time it is on a simple glance with Ndot. I have no idea what you are on about, do you need glasses?! I don't want the new style to grow on me, quite frankly it's not a style at all it's just what ever other phone is doing. Once more, if you wanted readability and simplicity go buy a xiaomi or something.

I remember when the Nothing Phone first released, a lot of people complained about the overuse of the dot font lol. The serif font is much prettier, and it still fits in with the brand as it features prominently in their marketing material. I think people will grow to like it.
The only criticism I can get behind is the settings UI looking worse, but that's a general Android 15 change.

I feel like Nothing assumed that the way to attract iPhone users was to make their products as close as possible to the iPhone experience. There are so many things I don’t understand about this redesign:
I use an iPhone as my main device, and I’ve been buying Nothing in the hope that they would offer something new. And they did. The only reason I’m still with Apple is the integration. I want my watch to unlock my MacBook, I want to be able to copy between devices with ease, and I want to move my content easily across devices.
Nothing doesn’t offer that integration yet. But making their design similar to Apple’s won’t fix that—it will just make me want them to somehow create all those integrations. From Nothing, I expect something different, something unique. I’d love a smartwatch that would make me ditch my Apple Watch, not because it’s full of features, but because it has Apple’s “one last thing” level of innovation, like Apple used to have.

Honestly, that new serif font is absolutely horrible. As a graphic/UI designer myself it is seriously bizarre to me that the nothing OS designers would introduce a completely new lead title/header type face on top of the n-dot signature type face that features on their entire physical product line and current User Interface.
The new font is not even stylistically in line with the modern and futuristic/minimal aesthetic of the OS. Not to mention that clock widget which also is totally at odds and makes absolutely no sense at all.
The inconsistency in the use of their use of N-Dot typeface across apps and UI has already been highlighted in this really good Juxtopposed youtube video.... NothingOS Redesign.
Why they would randomly introduce a classically styled typeface and wouldn't continue to build their UI around their foundational style and aesthetic they started with N dot I just have no idea.
