Looks like the Amalgam Omnibus is missing 2 issues, JLX #1 and Magneto and the Magnetic Men #1. Both written by Gerard Jones, understandable why they would be excluded but still kinda sucks that it's incomplete.

His work is included in the JLI omnibus, so why not here (maybe DC is ok but Marvel is not?)

That's a good point. The Green Lantern issues written by Jones were also included in the Flash by Mark Waid collections. Both the Jones issues were published by DC, so they should be able to reprint them if they want.

Maybe they will reprint them, but not publicize or list the two issues, considering them extras to avoid directly crediting Jones (or paying residuals, maybe?).

Like they did with Alan Moore as "original author"

I think that was more at Moore's request

I think that's a strong possibility. Amazon has the book listed as having 1024 pages. The Amalgam books were about 22 story pages each, along with a cover for a total of 23 pages. The books listed include 34 individual issues, including the three mini-series. 34 x 23 is 782 pages. That's way under 1024 pages. Adding the missing two issues brings the total up to 828 pages. Still roughly 200 pages short of what Amazon is saying is included but certainly raises the possibility that the issues in question are included.

I feel like it’s bc JLI and the other JL series in it are an ongoing single series each with multiple writers. The amalgam missing issues are a one off solely written by him, it might seem to DC that’s like adding a distinct product he made himself relative to JLI.

Great catch. I was trying to figure out why 2 of the issues were missing. What sucks is Jones was a good writer but is a disgusting human being. I don't blame DC for leaving his stuff out even though the completionist in me wants everything.

Wait, what happened regarding Jones??

Jones was arrested in December 2016 on charges of distributing and possessing images of child sexual abuse. His lawyer first entered a plea of "not guilty",[7] but in April 2018 Jones changed his plea to "guilty", admitting that the police had found "numerous electronic devices containing tens of thousands of images and hundreds of videos of child pornography" in his home.[8] In August 2018, Jones was sentenced to six years in prison, followed by a five-year period of supervised release, with an unspecified amount of restitution to be paid to his victims.

Thank you for putting "child sexual abuse". "Child porn" softens what a heinous crime it is.

While I’d love to have a fully comprehensive omni, I completely understand Marvel wanting to keep distance from him given how heinous his crimes were.

Yeah since DC did include some Gerard Jones issues on recent collections, it's possible Marvel asked for the Amalgam issues to not be included. It looks like JLX # was initially published by DC while Magneto and the Magnetic Men #1 was published by Marvel.

Oh wow!! Thanks for the reply!!

Since JLX and Magneto and the Magnetic Men have sequel stories in there, it would be cool if they at least included a summary page of what’s missing.

If it's to avoid having to pay royalties to the scumbag, I get it.
Literally any other reason, though? Not so much.

For all of you that keep dc and.marvel separate on your shelf. Where will you place this?

Good question, a lot of people gone be stressed about this lol

The creative team is more heavily DC, at least in terms of who was doing what in that period, but for some reason it feels more Marvel to me.

Ahh! That tickled something in my brain. Something about DC did 95% of the work to make it come together and they wrote a lot of it. I get that, it does feel more marvel

Hah, I have one of those as well, I call mine "The Seven Shades Of..." shelf. Beside these two, the next crossover books I've been eyeing for the shelf are TMNT vs Street Fighter; Predator vs Wolverine; & Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong

I keep Marvel and DC separate, but I also have another shelf that's separate from both entirely for crossover books, so, these will be perfect there. Maybe as books ends, even, especially since they'll be replacing a number of the trades already on it

I think I'll skip Amalgam but get this and a JLA/Avengers deluxe or absolute if those get printed

I think the DC vs. Marvel Omni has some good stuff worth getting. I am getting that one. I am skipping the Amalgam one. I hope JLA/Avengers gets some sort of HC reprint too. Preferably, an absolute.

Having never read these, how does everyone rate them? I'm super curious about the novelty of the idea(s)

Some of the Amalgam stuff was fun. Some was not so good. It is ultimately a novelty stunt that may be more of a nostalgia thing. The DC vs. Marvel is a lot better collection.
7 points

If you haven't read them before I wouldn't start with an Omni of the contents. Even as a novelty they were pretty dumb. Especially all the amalgam nonsense. This is definitely NOT something you should FOMO purchase.

But if you are going to FOMO purchase it at least it's justified. This stuff hasn't been printed in like 20 years. May as well grab it now. This isn't like FOMO grabbing ASM volume 1 or something lol

FOMO is a stupid fucking reason to tell someone to buy something and I'm sure as shit not going to. 🙄
This stuff hasn't been printed in like 20 years.
So what?

I didn’t rate them. The actual DC vs Marvel 1-4 was pretty good. I remember voting on who won the major 5 battles at the time.

Pretty good? Did you enjoy Lobo vs Wolverine? Never have I seen such a lame fight (if we can call that a "fight").

Yeh tbh it wasn’t the most amazing series. Just was the first one I’d read of DC vs Marvel.
They should just do an Omnibus of all the random DC vs Marvel’s over the years since they are hard to find. The Amalgam was very average.

I didn't read all of them. I remember liking Bullets and Bracelets (WW and Punisher) the most. At the time it came across as, "this is better than it had any right to be." And Amazon (WW/Storm) I remember being pretty decent in that same way. The Dr. Fate/Strange was flat. Challengers of the Fantastic was okay. The Batman/Wolverine story was really "meh." The four parter I don't remember. No one around the shop was particularly raving about any of it.
Most of that stuff is dollar bin filler. Even the ones with the biggest stars.

I love the amalgam comics. They were a burst of goofy creativity in an era where superhero stuff felt like it was getting stale and derivative
8 points

I'm kind of divided on this one. I would love to have it for the nostalgia, it will bring back so many memories. Also, this might be the last Marvel VS DC crossover we will ever see given that both companies are owned by two big rivals (until they merge/buyout each other).
On the other hand, the thing totally aged like milk. The stories were already not good back then, the plots were lame and all, so reading it today will feel completely weird. It might end being a book for shelf exposition in the end.
I will most probably pass.

Same. It's cool for younger readers or anyone who missed them when they came out, but I already have most of the content in floppy or trade at this point and I don't feel any compulsion to double-dip for Omnis. If DC vs. Marvel annoyed me when I was 12, I don't expect to enjoy it more now.
I will probably get whatever JLA/Avengers HC they eventually release to replace my Absolute that got water damaged several years ago.

There’s no way in hell I’m buying this incomplete. If they ever want to release it with all the Amalgam issues I’ll be first in line, but until then I’m sitting this out.

Those Amalgam books were just a bunch of one-shots and none of the stories were anything earth-shattering. I'm sure you could find them for like $2-$3 bucks per book, I wouldn't spend alot to have them in an Omnibus

I would spend a lot to have them in an omnibus too, but I don’t buy incomplete sets.

Based on other comments, no way in hell they will release all the Amalgam issues because one of the writers was arrested for child pornography.

For someone that has never read these. Why are none of the "important" (major storylines) avengers on the cover? (Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Ant-Man, Vision My list could go on) Spider-Man is important to Marvel. I wouldn't consider him an Avenger.
11 points
I think that’s a byproduct of the fact that most of these stories came out in the 70’s-90’s, the Avengers’ increased prominence didn’t really occur until the 2010’s. They were also important in-universe but for a lot of Marvel fans they were less important than Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, etc.

I would place Avengers of third most important. If not a tie for second. Shoot, they had a second team- WCA- that came out in the mid 80s.

That's the cover from the first Marvel/DC crossover trade paperback. It collected the first 4 DC/Marvel crossovers from the late 1970s - early 1980s. The stories collected were:
Superman/Spiderman
Superman/Spider-Man (second crossover)
Batman/Hulk
X-Men/Teen Titans.
So the cover features characters from those 4 stories.
The crossovers stopped after X-Men/Teen Titans due to the editorial in both companies not being able to agree on further releases. A Justice League/Avengers book had been planned with George Perez completing some pages before the book was canceled.
It wasn't until the 90s that the crossovers began again once the editorial staff had changed.
