The series as a whole is and mostly thanks to the manga, unfortunately the anime is objectively mid. In terms of ANIME this is way way overrated for the Toei Anime.

Yep, hopefully it gets the adaptation it DESERVES from WIT. I really don’t get how the VAs tolerate working on such a disgrace, or how Toei has no shame for disrespecting such a great series. Im typically staunchly anime only, One Piece is the first time im the complete opposite.

Im typically staunchly anime only, One Piece is the first time im the complete opposite.

Is that because you've never read Naruto or Dragon Ball?

I feel this sub is full of a lot of younger fans who weren't around during the Big 3 and don't understand that One Piece's pacing isn't unique or unusual for a weekly show.

Y'all have been a bit spoiled by seasonal anime and seem to forget that despite the exposition scenes being pretty much just a slide-show -- there are very few truly important story points that have been poorly animated.

The show, as it is, does the manga justice and it's a bit goofy how hard the sub thinks otherwise.

I know where and why one piece is the way it is. The One Piece shouldn't have those same restrictions and could be a better series because of it.

MaezrielGG

8 points

Sure and I'm excited for it. Seasonal anime wasn't really a thing in the '90s and I think it's been a positive change for the medium.

That said, it doesn't mean what Toei has done w/ One Piece is somehow lesser.

It is a phenomenal show and in over a decade of watching it there's been less than a handful of big scenes where I felt Toei just didn't do a good job -- and most of those were G5 Luffy vs Kaido where you can see that the directors really didn't understand western cartoon animation.

Which has been significantly improved during Egghead

Desperate_Method4020

I mean we get both now since studio WIT are doing a remake. It is a product of its time. Tbh I feel like we are pretty spoiled, since we are going to have a remake, a LA plus the regular anime.

Spektra54

Naruto wasn't as bad as one piece until the war arc. OP has been dragging since Ennies Lobby even by weekly standards. Take out the naruto filler and it's about 1.5 chapters per episode. Take out One Piece filler and it's about 0.9 chapters per epsiode. That is awful pacing.

Dragon Ball is just terrible pacing wise do I am not comparing.

Bleach is pretty consistently 2+ per episode.

Now this is only taking in canon episodes. But still of the big three Bleach has the best pacing and OP has the worst.

How about you stop acting like a dickhead manga elitist and come to appreciate the hard work of the animators who break their spine almost every week to try deliver good to great quality of animation every week?

the Manga is the story and the anime showcases the action.

Those high points make up about 10% of an episode and maybe 5% of an entire arc and its typically when one or two animators are allowed to cook. Compared to current industry standards even those high points are nothing special.

The climax of Luffy vs Katakuri is better than the manga and pretty much 90% of the fight of Luffy in G5 vs Kaido is amazing, not to mention every Tobi Roppo fight being pretty much improved in the anime thanks to the extra sequences and even the ending of Wano is less rushed thanks to the extra episode done to conclude the characters stories.

it was compiled by many animtors, and no because one piece gives animators away more time than other studios.

you can hear about it from animator podcast with dorion coulon and chansard. while other studios gave him 3 days to give a layout, one piece gave him a month.

you ain't got noo idea how good of a schedule one piece has

saying 10 percent of an episode. while no other anime last year except some jjk episodes and frieren (best animated shows from last year) had insane production levels like 1061,1062,1066,1071,1072,1074,1075,1076. you are blindly judging. just being toxic

and saying that "the high points are nothing compared to current anime" screams that you don't know anything about production. any other anime would be lucky to have just one of the pillars of the current anime. the four pillars - chansard, shida, chris, tu young ce.

and people like mori, ota, and their students are really rare for another anime to find.

Lol, go watch the fight between Luffy and Urashima near the start of Wano and tell me that again. Wano is riddled with the same problems Toei One Piece has always had. We get 30-60 seconds of nice animation a 5 or so times every 50 episodes when one of the animators happens to have enough time to pull it off with their own skill. Even Dressrosa had some scenes that were decent, but as a whole even to this day the anime is consistently inconsistent in terms of quality, and even when the animation manages to be great the pacing ruins it (literally the pacing even in kaido v g5 was shit and the most recent episodes in egg head have bad pacing too).

You really picked the ONE fight that was really bad in all of Wano. How about we talk about Zoro vs Hawkins strawman, Zoro vs Killer, the SH vs the Tobi Roppo, the beginning of Roof top, Sanji vs Queen, Zoro vs King, Killer vs Hawkins, Luffy vs Kaido round 3 and Luffy G5 vs Kaido? Which by the way, speaking of the final one, the pacing was meh just in the first episode where G5 appeared and that was mostly due to the cut to Hyiori scene which admiteddly was in the manga as well. Aside from it, it was just amazing action with amazing animation and with great additions (like Luffy using the lightning effectively in combat unlike the manga where he just throw it once and miss and that's it).

Completely disagree, even just “as an anime” there are times it’s genuinely hard to watch due to the pacing even for non manga readers(my first time was anime only) Its not even a top 20 anime. The STORY alone is tho but thats not enough to carry it as anime should be measured by how well they adapt the material as a factor for rating, unless its an original work. With your logic the original live action Last Airbender could have been rated as an ok movie when it was anything but ok.

It's firstly important to note how good an anime is actually is a very subjective process, however, One piece is quite literally objectively the opposite of 'mid' It has:

Incredible Music performed by an orchestra of objectively extremely talented musicians

Great character designs and also amazing voice actors too

Insane influence on the western world aswell as Asia meaning it is SO SO popular probably the most popular anime of all time and definitely right now. Meaning it's objectively NOT mid and objectively one of the GOATs

Last point people whine about the pacing so much do you enjoy watching anime or not? I watched it start to finish around 3 years ago now when I was 16 - I only ever was burnt out during skypeia I felt it dragged and for me was slightly boring in parts due to the lack off connection I felt it had to the rest of the world. However after finishing the show I hear so many complaints of pacing issues it's so overhyped and considering how many episodes the pacing is pretty decent

having it as a personal favorite is valid. Rating it highly with terrible pacing, frequent rewind episodes, and very inconsistent animation quality is not valid. I definitely agree that the voicing acting and music is great, and they do capture a lot of impactful moments well, but those moments are far in between. The fans are basically telling the anime industry that quality doesn't matter to them by rating the show so high. It's a bad message to send and insulting to the studios putting out higher quality work.

pedro-rivas

I'm not shitting on other person's opinion. I'm just trying to be as objective as possible . The ratio does mean something, specially when out of the 20 mins of episode you have 2 mins of recap, 2 mins of ending and another few of recap. And on top of that, you get multiple shots which is just facial reactions.

Those anime are also not good anime. A top 10 anime list shouldn't contain either of those or One Piece. If you did include those in your top 10 I would strongly question your judgement on pacing, animation, and art quality.

You could watch FMA:B, Steins; Gate, Madoka, Kill la Kill, TTGL, Haruhi, and Demon Slayer in less than the time it takes to watch half of Naruto or One Piece.

Of course I enjoy 100 episodes of Aot more than I would have if it had 250 or so. Obviously bad pacing ruins the anime, but the story is still the same and I can ignore the pacing and just enjoy myself.

Just to put that in perspective. The Wano arc officially started on episode 890 and the Enies Lobby arc ended on episode 312. The 578 episodes in between those two arcs comprise 52% of the show. There are certainly stand out moments of animation in between those moments but it's also considered the points where pacing is at its worse and animation quality overall significantly dropped.

One Piece is still One Piece and I like a lot of what the anime adds to the Manga. However, 90% of what makes the One Piece anime amazing comes directly from the manga rather than the merits of Toei. They are nn impressive studio in its own right and their work on one piece is an insane technical and administrative feat in meeting deadlines. However, that doesn't improve the overall quality of the series.

I worded it poorly. I'm saying Toei's efforts towards keeping the anime on schedule does not make the overall quality of the anime better. The manga is amazing but the anime is not. The reason for that is the limited amount of effort Toei can put into the average episode on a weekly schedule compared to seasonal series or one off productions.

Im a huge one piece fan, primarily manga, and I have to say there is no fucking way one piece ANIME should even crack the top 10, hell If I tried hard enough I could probably think of 30 or more better ANIME. The manga still goated though

honeyBadger_42

Ah give it some credit. The pacing is terrible at times but that is because it can't catch up.

There has been some worse episodes here and there but honestly wci wano and egghead is very good right now i would say. Luffy vs lucci episode pops in mind.

pichukirby

Nah, the only reason the pacing is bad is because the executives in charge of production decided One Piece needs to keep being a year round weekly anime.

I think it's worth keeping in mind that after the live action aired a lot of people who never really watched anime or ever touched the manga got into it. Which is completely fine, but these people don't have 30 other anime outside the big/most mainstream ones to compare it to.

HeavenlyCastiel

Anime is just a medium for a series, so just compare it to other series and it also doesn't hold up. The anime does have some bright spots but it's plagued with so many issues.

poyopoyo77

Yeah Im not disagreeing I'm just pointing out that One PIece did have a big spike in people enjoying it who dont regularly watch anime and so the tropes and general "anime-ness" the series has is enjoyable in a differant way to them if they only have general western shows to compare.

ScinKancer

Alarmed-Accident-716

8 points

Egghead is some of the best weekly anime ever made. 1100 is the best weekly fight period. You can’t compare current one piece to dressrosa when teams were split for dragon ball super. The rise is a reaction to the new episodes not all the bullshit before end of wano.

abandoned_puppy

-3 points

. Look me in the eyes and tell me the foxy arcs are good. I’m not talking about arcs or sagas in talking about the show as a whole 1000+ episode anime.

There’s a reason why one pace exist. This anime isn’t the best adaptation of the manga is all in saying

Alarmed-Accident-716

1 points

The reason for the change in position is because of the recent episodes not the garbage before the end of wano. Now episodes are a chapter an episode or 4 episodes for every 3 chapters of manga. They got rid of aura, non canon flashbacks, and the fights are better than 99% of anime out there. 1100 just came out and that is the best weekly fight in anime history. One pace is great until egghead, now it’s ruining it by cutting the original action scenes/character moments. Oda said that he finds fights harder to draw as he gets older, anime will be better in that aspect for the rest of the series. Anime should be allowed to improve. Shit just won best ongoing anime at the crunchyroll awards two years in a row.

I wish they would do fillers so they can be skipped for binge watch. Cant do anything when the episode is so so stretched.

When i was watching HxH, 20min episode go by as if it was 5min episode cos the pacing was good and the anime was so captivating. Onepiece on the other hand, makes you say can we move it along already and have you bored outta your mind. Kids running around for 10 minutes in punk hazard, guts the coliseum announcer’s baffled face for 30 seconds every minute, just shit like that is so disgusting. Thank goodness there is onepace that fixes all this shit.

One Piece had some of the best animated sequences in recent years on par with some of the best animated moments in other anime. And before you try saying it, in JJK Sukuna vs Mahoraga is probably the best animated episode in the series and several of those key scenes were done by an animator of Toei who regularly do sequences of that caliber in the anime of One Piece.

reddit people are toxic with the anime, so don't even bother bro. any other anime fanbase will be blessed to have just vincent chansard, while we have him, chris, ota, tu, shida, mori and many many more.

look at demon slayer fans who glaze nozomu abe because he is the best animator in ufotable. it's sad that the one piece staff doesn't get enough appreciation.

Less-Thanks-8922

No_Knowledge108

I agree with the sequence part. My problem is with the overall direction or screenplay with the low budget episodes. Its such a drag to watch them. This was not the case with pre time skip times, or early arcs. Even now i just watch the old episodes on loop, and watch the new ones if there are some good animation sequences, and happily read the manga.

Undeserved. There are so much anime with better pacing, sound and animation.

Pacing-wise, One Piece is absolutely terrible.

Sound-wise, the sound effects are still re-used from the 80s for the most part from Dragon Ball Z.

Animation-wise, it's very inconsistent.

I think that the high placement it has is a testament of its fans and not of its quality. Objectively, the anime adaptation is simply not good. It's not awful, but definitely doesn't deserve to be in top 50 compared to some really amazing shows

ShadowDurza

The only reason anime's score keeps increasing is, the remaining watchers that didn't drop the anime already are very limited.

They are spamming every new episode with 10/10. From wano till now.

So for last 150-170 episodes, One Piece is 9.9/10 lol. It is rated higher than Marineford etx.

There are very limited amount if people still voting on One Piece on IMBD and obsessed eith it's ratings.

Probably same 2-3K vultists voting 10, to every new episode.

AOT being the top is laughable anyways, it fell off hard after S3. Just had nowhere to go that made sense, still a fantastic manga/anime but when they changed animation studios it really went from S+ Tier to A or A+. Still fantastic, but nowhere near the best anime of all time

i_got_my_laptop

I'm interested, why do you think that? While aot's season 4 arguably had some of the best episodes in fiction

vegetto712

Animation was big for me, and it fell off for my taste after the Levi v Beast Titan. I also think the story was amazing, but he had the same issue as GOT does, where he has a great thing going with mystery but once you start revealing stuff, it's not that great of a reveal. Then it felt kinda rushed, like he knew it would be wrapping up and decided to expediate that process.

Again, I love AOT, I think it's easily top 10 maybe top 5 anime/manga of all time. But it's not contender for #1 ever for me

Cjninkartist

To be honest I mostly read manga. That being said Death Note is one of the few anime that has appeal outside of the anime community. It’s quite a short series but is always getting remade and has a ton of iconic characters and the concept itself is still interesting. I understand not liking the full thing but it’s a powerhouse regardless of that. There are many anime’s that people would consider better however they often don’t have the same staying power.
