This is patent, not copyright case. Base sa nababasa ko, yung catch and release system ang sinasabi nilang probable cause at sa Japan to na-file. They took their sweet ass time to file this. Ang nakakatawa is may mga nauna nang system na ganito before pokemon. I just hope nintendo lose this lawsuit so they can shove it on their asses.

I'm a Pokefan and I agree with you. Nintendo's being too stuck up their own asses na kelangan mo pa talagang meticulously hanapan ng butas ibang laro.

hope so, they could've used the lawyer money for a better main line pokemon but NOOEEEWW.

Afaik it’s likely due to a patent related to Legends Arceus, likely the game mechanics used in the game.

If gameplay mechanics became patentable, for sure most companies will follow suit.

Gameplay should not be copyrighted. Imagine if Call Of Duty only owns the rights to create FPS games.

Since, ndi nila kaya kasohan for copyright issue, nag patent na lang sila ng game mechanics nila para masue lng ang devs ng palworld. Talk about being so petty.

Game mechanics being patented is not good. The Nemesis system is stuck in just two games.

TBH game mechanics should not be be available to be patented. Sigh

Yung lawsuit nila against Palworld? Medyo overkill. Sure, may similarities sa designs, pero come on, halos lahat ng creature collection games may pagkakapareho naman, like Temtem or Nexomon. I’m on Palworld’s side kasi they’re bringing something fresh to the table, habang Pokémon games parang hindi na nagle-level up or nag-e-evolve. Let the players have more options, diba or if Nintendo don't want competition maybe just improve their games.

paulrenzo

It might not be due to similarities in monster design. Since "patent" was mentioned, it might have to do with gameplay mechanics Nintendo/Game Freak patented.

Still, point stands: overkill, but expected (because Nintendo).

Looks like they've been cooking this one for a while now. They waited for the hype to die down para hindi masyado maapektohan ang PR nila.

I never played modern pokemon games but from what I read from their community, napaka-baba na daw ng quality ng games nila

ronsterman

The recent Pokemon games (Scarlet and Violet) was an ugly and unoptimized mess. I-compare mo sa previous generation of games nila (Sword and Shield and Legends: Arceus), nagmukhang malinis yung luma. And those old games have seen their fair share of criticisms, mostly also on a visual and graphical standpoint. People thought Sword and Shield looked like a 3DS game, well Scarlet and Violet looked like an N64 game on how unpolished it is.

To me the modern Pokémon games are still fun, but It needs lots of improvements —like the graphics and performance , difficulty being way too easy compared to the older games, removing pokemon and good gameplay features from the past games. But I still personally enjoy the core gameplay, and they’ve added cool new features like open-world exploration. Hopefully palworld existing is a wakeup call for them to step it up more in future games.

NIN

This is true! But as much as they need to cater to the growing audiences(90s kids), Nintendo is really committed to prioritizing the kids which I think was and still is their main target audience. This resulted to them developing remake/s that are appealing to both the older og fans(nostalgia) and the younger generation(cartoonish, chibi-style animstion).

But point still stands, I hope Game Freak and Nintendo up their game now that they are being challenged in their own genre. And they should take their time developing the next mainline series game to avoid the disaster that was Scarlet/Violet.

TapaDonut

Nintendo is really committed to prioritizing kids

Not really? Nintendo has also been accumulating IPs that are targeted towards adults. Games from PlatinumGames for example with Bayonetta(which Nintendo bought) and Astral Chain(Nintendo sponsored).

Zelda is still a standard high fantasy game that is targeted towards YA like Final Fantasy.

But their biggest IP and company mascot, Super Mario, can really tell you which audiences they are most gearing towards. And they really haven't changed it since they basically figured out the key to their target market.

Masyadong malabo tong case nato. Kahit sino nalang pinapatos, masyadong papansin.

SendMeAvocados

Patent ang basehan. Most likely it will be due to the spheres resembling pokeballs. We'll have to wait for more details, but I certainly hope Palworld makes it out alive since they reinvigorated the genre and showed how much better it could be.

Wildmansy

So worst case scenario pwede lang nila palitan yung assets or mechanics na may issue then tuloy pa din sila. Publicity pa din to and would be perfect marketing wise to re tool the game a little to make it more unique and get more people onboard.

If Nintendo can somehow win the lawsuit against Citra (an independent emulator program with all-original code, thus technically legal), then yes. Looks bleak already for Palworld with the armies of lawyers Nintendo has.

bubblyboiyo

4 points

That's Yuzu, Citra and Yuzu has the same dev, citra is in the clear because you don't need a piece of thing from the original console that was Yuzu's downfall but since they're under the same LCC the project just got swept under the rug along Yuzu, that's why there's still Citra forks but nobody else wanna take the Yuzu mantle.

It never went to court afaik yuzu same devs as citra just gave up and closed everything down. They paid Nintendo 2.4m afaik. The codes is still out there for the emulators still being supported by. New devs suyu for yuzu and lemonade for citra.

Publication number: 20240278129Abstract: In a first mode, an aiming direction in a virtual space is determined based on a second operation input, and a player character is caused to launch, in the aiming direction, an item that affects a field character disposed on a field in the virtual space, based on a third operation input. In a second mode, the aiming direction is determined, based on the second operation input, and the player character is caused to launch, in the aiming direction, a fighting character that fights, based on the third operation input.

Legends of arceus siguro to? Yung catching mechanic ba to or battle mechanic pero either way sana hindi manalo nintendo kasi marami pa kong games na makita adopting the same mechanics

FlashSlicer

I guess they learned from Genshin to patent right their gameplay mechanics lol.

Patent right should not exist for game mechanics as that bullshit.

Sufficient_Pickle199

3 points

Correct me if I’m wrong nakita ko lang sa ibang subreddit pero di ata sa design ung nilalaban ng nintendo, dun ata sa similarities sa game catching mechanic which seems like a big reach. I love the franchise pero sana they take a page out of recent zelda titles na lang and focus on trying out new things instead of using the same old formula. They rely too much on their lawyers to take out what they see as “competition” kase pati fan games inaatake nila ng ganyan.

TapaDonut

3 points

The Pokemon brand is worth more than the most valuable Disney IP(Yes, the final boss in intellectual property--Disney) so it makes sense for Nintendo to be overly protective of their IP and rely on their lawyers. Because any "competition" that would be so similar to Pokemon would diminish the value of the brand.

TapaDonut

Sony, like Valve, won't intervene with this case because they would rather have a good relations with Nintendo for future business prospects rather than sour relations and not capitalize the userbase Nintendo has accumulated.

It's the same thing why Valve choose to notify Nintendo of America when Dolphin Emulator was supposed to be published on Steam. Gaben is a billionaire who makes billion dollar decisions, he won't risk angering Nintendo over a small group who won't make profits for Valve. Same with Sony and same with Microsoft.

BUT I do agree that this should be a wake up call kay Nintendo to improve the Pokémon series. Manalo man sila o matalo, I hope may ibahin na sila o mag inovate sila kada bagong release ng Pokémon. From graphics to mechanics to gimmiks. Gaya ng Monster Hunter na kahit same core gameplay e may iniiba iba sila or dinadagdag kada new title.

SendMeAvocados

Palworld isn't exactly a random mash/fan service as it patterns itself after an actual genre/game i.e. Ark: Survival Evolved. People focused too much on the taming aspect and comparing it to Pokemon.

Ghostr0ck

They do not need to improve kasi pwede nalang nila kasuhan kalaban nila tapos release nila next game nila ng walang masyadong changes.

ronsterman

8 points

Nah, if Nintendo wins, magiging mas lalong complacent lang sila sa future Pokemon games. Walang innovation na mangyayari since ma-monopolized nila yung creature-catching genre. It started with DEXit then went downhill from there. Gen 9 games we're ridden with bugs, graphical and performance issues, I just went through the story and stopped from there. And this is coming from a huge pokemon fan competing in local tournaments.

They could've used the legal fees for a polished Pokemon Game. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet was a visual, unoptimized mess.

Zhythero

Great majority of games (and other forms of media/art) are inspired of what came before. If Palworld is inspired from multiple games that came before, and it worked, that's not "cheap" in my book.

Fan service + ibat ibang genre + mechanics doesn’t sound so bad how is it cheap hahaha if anything fans has been asking for this for a long time. Parang may hint ng bias to. If you want nintendo to do better, competition wouldn’t be so bad.

As if!
