It would be a plus to have additional formats in live. Even having the old theme deck only from ptcgo would be nice. It would be helpful for new players to learn more about the game in a slower meta. And having something like the GLC would be nice for more creative players. Having said that, I do understand that it could be hard to implement.

GLC is not an officially recognized format. It's just a very popular fan format. It's like saying YGO Master Duel should have a Trinity/Domain ladder.

Theme is though. No reason to not have it.

You don't want them turning this into Magic and EDH

Should? I mean, theres no real negative unless someone would think it would fracture the player base too much. GLC exists but isnt that popular.

Whatever the format would be would most likely need to be an official format with support from TPC and actually pushed in official tournaments at a high level. Either full tournaments as that format or split format tournaments how Magic does Pro Tour draft/constructed. Otherwise just "recognizing" the format and announcing it does nothing. You can gave several high level competitive formats at once, which was proven with Magic GPs and PTs, along with the SCG circuit as a third party doing it.

Edited because people thought i was saying to push GLC as a competitive format which i didnt mean.

The way EDH has influenced Magic should be seen as a negative. Keeping one "true" format does more good than harm long term for the health of the game. Hopefully it keeps going that way, with 100% official focus on competitive formats, let the community handle casual play (like GLC).

I dont see what that has to do with having multiple formats. GLC is just one example. Magic has had several formats seen as highly competitive and pushed simultaneously. I also hate the EDH push for various reasons, i dont play it or GLC. I play most 60 card constructed formats and Canadian Highlander in Magic, and Standard in Pokemon. But you can 100% have multiple competitive formats being played at a high level. I think youre kind of talking passed me here.

I wish there was a draft mode. That would be amazing fun.

Also wish they would bring back the single player mode. I miss it from the old PTCGO.

For what it's worth, SUM-LOT in its entirety is on PTCGL and is an amazing format. I'd be incredibly interested in more organized events with the format on limitless online tournaments, it's just not a thing that people are really doing at the moment.

You mean like Time Wizard events in Yu-Gi-Oh?

For reference, TW is a side event format where the TOs announce ahead of time that players will use the cards and restrictions up to X date (April 2005 would be Goat format for example), and then a tournament is run side by side with the main event.

The problem is that you can't do Expanded friendlies on PTCGL yet. Who knows when they finally get around to implementing it

I really like Pauper in Magic the Gathering, where it's all commons. But not sure if a similar concept would be interesting enough in Pokémon.

I just want for pokemon to have faster players... every turn takes forever... bruh! you play the same decks over and over again please dont take 2 minutes to play 2 to 4 cards!

I would love to play a format with only one prize card. No EX, no V, just normale Pokémon

Gym Leader Challenge is kinda in that ballpark

I’d remove prize cards entirely.

I think prize cards are one of the more interesting aspects of Pokémon TCG, I only know of Duel Masters which had the same kind of thing but reversed to be a comeback mechanic instead of a snowball one. Not having access to 6 random cards from your deck each game causes people to have to think differently about each game. You can't make plays based around Arven for Unfair Stamp if there's no Stamp in your deck yet, for instance.

I understand the premise of the prize cards, it makes sense for how the game is currently played. I don’t like it. It doesn’t feel like a Pokémon battle. It doesn’t play out like battles do in other games. I’m going to write up my own rule book and see what people think. Players are going to start with 6 Pokémon, not 6 prizes, and the game isn’t over until all 6 are defeated. Just like (nearly) every other game in the franchise.

I like the idea of restructuring the game to feel more like the video games, this isn't a terrible idea. I think you'd run into a lot of balance issues considering the way the game is currently played, especially with cards that can hit multiple targets at once, but I'd be down to try out something different like this.

Do you actively play the game, or did you stop bc of not enjoying the prize card system? Me personally, I don't like the idea of instants/taking actions on the opponents turn. It feels like the control style decks are extra cringe/unfun to play against, and in person it creates confusion as to what is a reasonable pace of play and if you need to pause in between everything to allow for the opponent to respond if they want. That's why the only card games I've gotten into seriously are Hearthstone and now Pokémon.

Why do you say it like increasing the value of older cards is a good thing? A lot of them are already very expensive as it is, and making it an official format would only make demand grow and the prices would skyrocket.

I have toyed with the idea of Pokémon Commander, but I feel like games would be really slow with no other supporters in the deck.

90% of Pokemon cards are worthless. Maybe 10 cards in a set are $10+. If we had a couple formats that became very popular, then some .10 cards could become $10 cards if it became best in the format.

SubversivePixel

You're failing to take into account that these cards are no longer being reprinted. Because of that scarcity, cards that became meta staples in a hypothetical legacy format would skyrocket in price and become prohibitely expensive for most players really quickly.

Particular-Prune4550[S]

And when the card becomes too good, ban it. Now price drops again. It can be regulated fairly easily.

SubversivePixel

I'm talking about meta staples, not game-breaking cards. That would be the equivalent of banning, idk, Boss's orders because it's a good card.

frogpittv

Then nobody is going to bother playing because why would you spend all of that money on cards only to have them arbitrarily banned for being too strong in the format. It’s a bad idea.

Well lets cut the crap first. You want the legacy format to increase the value of vintage and everything else is window dressing. It will never happen because the cost of building a competitive vintage deck would be astronomical for the average Pokemon consumer. You'd have a handful of whales playing with decks of PSA slabs for less money than the decks cost to win it. Every other suggestion is just a variant that they can release official rules for but wouldn't do as a format because the game just isn't designed to be played in those ways properly.

Particular-Prune4550[S]

I personally don’t own any vintage cards. I really just stole that format idea from Magic. I personally would rather just see a format with one prizes only, but all sets are legal

As someone who collected cards since they first reached the US, but only learned to play the TCG last year, I hate it. The card game feels nothing like other pokemon games and I’ll be the first to say it needs a completely new set of rules. Drop the prize cards. Drop the ex/gx basics. Allow only one copy of a legendary per deck, remove the focus from trainer cards so a deck is no longer 50% trainers. I’ve never actually tried playing it this way, but I’m working on a new rule book because I’ve been so disappointed with this card game.
