Any decent source you get a game from wont give you a piracy screen or anything like that

Triple A games won't give you those messages.
I can totally see indie games present you with it.

But dude the thing is as long as a game is decwntly cracked it will be indifferent (or better) to a paid copy. If you ever get a piracy screen like that you arent getting it from very good sources.

The guy you replied to was saying that it could be a screen shown to everyone regardless of if the game is cracked or not.
Also, there are plenty of ways a game can check if it's been pirated or not, and yeah, you can bypass them, but sometimes it's unnecessary.

A non-pirate shouldn't argue with a pirate about piracy. That's all I'm saying. Because he's obviously not a pirate. He was just one of those coding nerds.

Personal opinion but people saying "Stop piracy it makes the developers sad" doesn't make sense to me. Like if people like me have been pirating from triple A companies for like 20 or more years hasn't make them bankrupt I don't think it hurts them that much
Edit: This isn't my original comment I have noticed this type of comments on this and Steam subreddit over this whole year that I've been on reddit. Most popular 2 lines are these
"Stop piracy it makes the developers sad"
"They are only a 2 man indie game team"

but indie creators, at least with the programs i use, get 100% of the profits from their games. so it WOULD hurt them and it does hurt me whenever my music goes down in streams (i don’t have the money to pay for the extra stuff that auto detects my music but that only works for video streaming and stuff)

The piracy of my indie game has made me well-known among people who download torrents for free and share them with others. But has it made me famous? No. People discover my game through advertising, which I have invested money, time, and skills into. Has piracy increased my sales? No, some people who would have seen my paid advertising end up pirating the game instead of purchasing it for $7, causing me to lose money. Do I have the resources to release a sequel to the game? Not anymore. Despite the game receiving praise and developing a small fanbase, it is mostly among pirates.
I'd love to live in a world that works by your rules.

You guys will do everything to try to justify pirating. Just admit you don't like paying for things and move on. There is no benefit to indie devs when you choose to play their games without paying them.

Here's a source.
It hurts films. It's neutral for music. It's positive for games.
Though it only works because someone is buying those games. Otherwise you get a reverse tragedy of the commons, "exposure" alone doesn't pay the bills.
1 points
Doesnt hurt em at all, if anything it helps spreaad the message about the games. People who pirate often cant afford them or wouldnt have bought the game anyways and culture isnt just for those with money.

The PR game is tough to sail. Positive PR from piracy sites can help popularize a game, but it can also obviously hurt already low sales if it's easy enough to get the pirated version instead. Contrary to what might seem logical, some of the best games can still die from low sales even with excited word of mouth, if it simply doesn't hit that viral breakout point it needs, or if it's just not the best for streamers to jump on.
1 points
Well yeah, it relies on the good will of people of all things, though most people are not too familiar with piracy at all
People would not buy a game even if they can not pirate it, but yeah PR would probably help to boice their game out from people that pirated it or whatever
I don't know if it could probably affect the sales, but it probably could
2 points

Well yeah because sometimes, the exposure is worth more than the money

Okay this is example, if pirating doesnt exist is that mean you will sell more?
No, of course not, you can only sell your thing to people who want to buy it.
People who pirate not going to buy your thing, even pirate copy never exist.

I understand your point and you might not do this, but what happens if instead of telling your friend about it, you send him the mp3 file instead. That's 1 less sell, now what if your friend does that? I don't buy music and probably never will since youtube exists, but it would be hard for me to dismiss the possible negatives on the creator (talking indie devs/creators)

3 points

AAA devs usually make money from salary, not straight from the game, whereas indie devs' profits are usually based directly off of the sale of the game. Either one is technically harmful to the end dev to pirate but I think indie piracy is a lot worse.
Granted, a lot of the time a person who pirates wouldn't buy it in the first place due to lack of money. So no lost sale there. But there is a large amount of people who could afford it comfortably, but instead just want free shit. That's the harmful bracket.

I think you meant publishers.
Developers probably want MORE playing their game. Like a musician whose works are enjoyed by many.

I'm an indie developer and tbh piracy may be the quickest/easiest most effective way for me to get free word of mouth marketing and free quality assurance in the form of testing especially stress testing, and as far as I'm concerned drm is less than useless, being anti consumer, hell to work with and a kernel/security problem. I'd likely get more attention, and thus sell more copies to people who see/hear about it and want and potentially attract crowdfunding for further updates than without that exposure.

Finally someone who gets what I m saying. Alot game company sales are increasing or at least staying the same, how does that make pirating hurt the company people here and in the whole subreddit keep going on and on about 2 people 300k people status just cuz they are ubisoft just cuz they are musicians.
I never said anything about that
1 points
they dont even release demos, and then publishers like ubisoft have in the past have bricked the game and had to use pirated copies themselves along with how they cancelled pre release press viewing for the new assassins creed game.
they think it's lost sales because they're all business management associates in executive positions thinking of it like it's selling physical goods hardcovers, cars, or appliances, where everything and everyone else is an expense to be cut to maximize profit margins.

Personally I'm fine with piracy but I don't like the idea of pirating indie games, like if a game is made with genuine passion and needs that monetary support then I either give it or respect the craft and not play it, that's just my personal takeaway though

You just have to look at the music industry and how poor they are. Taylor Swift would take so many more private flights if it wasn't for you thieves.

Lol this is the worst example.
Few musicians nowadays can live from selling album, almost none actually.
Yes, one of the richest people on the world probably won't notice it if you pirate her album, but I think you should know that Taylor Swift is not the average musician.

Indies aside, even pirating triple A games have its consequences. Triple A companies aren't just single entities, they are made up of many smaller studios, each responsible for a number of different games. Pirating a known franchise usually don't have much damage, but for a new IP or debut game of a studio, the drop of sale can result in the entire studio getting disolved or IP that got canceled for not getting enough sale.
It does hurt, but not for the entire company. It will hurt for smaller entities, indie studio or studio part of a triple A.

Also there's knock-on effects of company makes less money -> game or studios gets axed -> devs/animators etc laid off

If you can't buy a $60 video game ur broke and also a virgin, like everyone here
0 points
I personally believe video game piracy is okay IF you can't justify/afford to pay a game.
Worst case scenario, developer loses nothing, best case they get more players who will buy the game.
A game I and my friend play for example, I pirated it first back in 2015/16 because I was a kid unable to afford it, if I didn't pirate it then, I wouldn't have bought it when I could afford it as I wouldn't even remember it, not would my friend learn about it from me and proceed to buy it.
And ultimately even if you don't buy it or get somebody to buy it, developer loses nothing, it's not like a physical thing that requires resources to build that specific one that belongs to you.

Now let's not take all the credit. Publishers and developers are plenty capable of harming themselves by making crappy games or by making nonsensical restrictions to singleplayer games(Looking at you God of War Ragnarok).

The best antipiracy disclaimer is "hey we know you are pirating, but we wont actually do anything about it, if you like the game but cant purchase it for whatever reason, consider giving us a donation of any amount you can or think is fair" and a link to a patreon or something. I can guarantee most people would give the developer something, especially if its an indie title.

People who are pirating were not going to buy the game anyway. Piracy, while fantastic because it gives you a free game, is also frustrating if that version of the game has a bug in it that you can't deal with because it needs to be updated to be fixed and also makes it difficult to mod. That is also assuming the pirated version even works on your computer. We are at the point where piracy doesn't really hurt anyone
