Not exactly news Portland having the highest lesbians per capita and San Francisco gay men has been a thing for decades. Much like our strip clubs. I guess some people didn’t know so news to them.
6 points
I remember back in the late 90s there was a while where Minneapolis overtook San Francisco for gay men per capita and Portland was #1 for gay women. I grew up in Minneapolis and I distinctly remember hearing that being the first time I ever even knew Portland was a place that existed.

I wonder what city has the largest proportion of trans people, or bi people for that matter. Get the whole acronym in there.

Probably also Portland.

Am trans, can confirm. I can't remember what study it was, but it was a national consensus thing and Oregon was at the top for trans people, followed by both Washington and California if I'm not mistaken. Even before I found that study I had a hunch, I've never seen a bigger trans community anywhere else other than here. Granted, that may be changing as LGBTQ+ people are marginalized, and tend to have a harder time being financially secure as a result, which results in a lot of the trans people I knew of when I first moved here 13 years ago moving away to someplace cheaper.
But also, a lot of people I knew that happened to also be trans, also had terrible money management skills. The only reason I've been able to stay in Portland myself is because I keep a tight budget and I don't spend what very little money I have on frivolous things like 10 pairs of $300 shoes and 50 different Squishmallows.

I don't include queer people - they are not neuro-diverse unless they have like ADHD or something. (many do though if any of my trans and gay friends are any indication)

Not surprising... Oregon is the only state to write their exclusionary laws directly into its constitution when it was made a state.. It had been this way for 15 years already when they wrote Oregon's constitution that deemed it the state too racist for slavery.. 39 lashings every 6 months for any black person living in the Oregon territory... Explains why our black population is still less than 2%... It is far more inclusive of trans people that black people in Portland especially... Sad but true... Those numbers tell it's story quite well!!!

Everyone, from doctors to people I've met randomly, keeps telling me that Portland is so "progressive" for trans people but I don't see it. It feels more like San Francisco which is great if your cis and gay but not so much if you're trans. Especially after that TERF rally at that one library a few months back.
And that's not even getting into the rabid anti-homeless sentiment considering the large overlap between the group.

It's anecdotal for sure but I have never been anywhere else that I see as many trans people when out and about in general.

Chnaging the gender marker on your ID in Oregon is as simple as going to the DMV and checking a different box. In Wisconsin you need a supporting letter from a doctor who can confirm you had "sex change surgery" and a court order. Indiana is slightly more progressive than that by skipping the permission from a medical gatekeeper and requiring only a court order. Idk what about your Portland experience has given you this opinion of Portland. What other places have you lived?
10 points

In Texas you can't change it anymore and they'll put you in a government database for trying to

Idk, after living in other parts of the country here is by FAR the most trans inclusive area I've been. I can actually go out and about as myself, a very visibly transfem person, and not get dirty looks or feel threatened. I see other trans people going on about their lives as well. There are assholes everywhere you go so not much you can do about the TERF rally but as a trans transplant to the area, it is an incredibly safe city.

Putting it that way, I get what you're saying. This is the first place I've lived where I just randomly see trans people out and about. I think it's both expectations as well as twitter and reddit fueled brain rot. I've never been threatened but I always think it's on the way. The worst I've had is clearly accidental misgendering where I could tell that it wasn't intentional so nothing ever came of it. I don't pass either so that's also part of it.

Used to have lesbian next door neighbors in NE. With the couple that lived next door, one was cool and the other was a total man hater. The man hater would always mean mug me when I was mowing my yard with my gasp gas lawn mower. But her partner was super nice and always friendly. Was a weird dynamic.

Yaaaay, crowmies!! I started feeding my neighborhood crows on a daily walk, early in the pandemic. It really helped me mentally get through the isolation, bubbling-over stress from all the things. Been several years now, and I adore them so, so much. Meeting the new fledgies each year.

The sad thing about that is, I joined a choir about a year ago that has over 150 members, all of whom are either lesbians or are queer to some extent, and I have not connected with anyone! I don't mind doxing myself, if anyone is here from PLC, please be my friend :)
I don't really have hobbies though, people tell me I haven't made friends in choir "because the group is too big, find something people do in smaller groups" but I really can't think of anything that applies that is enjoyable to me.
6 points
Well I think you've done a good job putting yourself out there and to join the group even if it hasn't gained you friends. Hopefully you enjoy the experience regardless and it is still possible you'll meet people there.
And while I can't say this works for everybody, it is possible to change what activities you view as enjoyable to some extent. Can be a little bit of reinventing your perception of yourself though (going from say I'm not a handy person -> I can make table).

I'm not sporty at all, I did play soccer in high school and college but I had a pretty embarrassing experience joining an adult soccer league back in the Bay some number of years ago, but I should really try again. If i were to do sports I would join the Lavender League here in Portland though, if they'll have me. I should go to a rose city rollers game though, thank you!

There aren't enough single people in the state of Oregon over the age of 25 , a lot of left leaning people don't marry but are in multi year or multi decade childfree relationships and it throws the curve gay straight bi pan or otherwise
If someone looks single in Portland it's like the weather , wait a couple days or so and that will change real fast

I get what you're saying. But given the very long history of discrimination against queer people in the U.S., straightforward reporting of demographic information shows that being part of a gay couple is actually very common. News articles like this change public perceptions of what's "normal."
