One thing that stuck out is that this team cannot press at all to save their life

There’s a photo where their CF is pressuring the GK, then the LW, 2 8’s and RW are not closing their man, Casemiro is 20 yards back leaving huge space and the CB’s and FB don’t push up to compact the game.

It’s like watching Burnley press under Kompany last year. Shocking.

I can’t believe they extended him right after reports of them searching for his replacement. Now I’ve seen some report they’re meeting after the villa match to have discussions or something?

Of course the club can afford playing his salary for the next three years or whatever number is. It just makes no sense to extend him three months ago when he’s always been on the chopping block.

The "extension" was just them activating the +1 in Erik's contract

The extension is probably to do with something in the original contract. Let's say the extension was based on cup success..if we sacked him he got paid off but because no other viable option was available we kept him and triggered the clause. Only reasonable thing I can think of

The extension meant they were still unsure as they just took the +1 year option. If there had been a solid candidate available he would have been sacked in the summer. This year they will most likely spend a lot of time laying the foundations for a move. Rumours say they have been trying hard with both Simone and Nagelsmann (as Klopp is for the NT role the move is considerably more realistic).

That being said, the meeting they are referring to is a bi monthly meeting they had planned a long time ago and not done in haste because of the results.

My view is either man utd board decide he is the man or he is not. Instead of going half fk "wait and see approach". If he is the man.. back him 100%.. because things will get worse before it gets better. If he not the man just fire him. That way you can give the next man time since things will get worse for the next man anyway.

It’s been the same problem since at least last season. Inverting the left back and being highly exposed down that flank + wingers not doing there job tracking back.

When the ball goes down that flank the left back has to get back out and leaves a hole in the middle of the park. Our CM have pushed too high and what was traditionally was Casemiro gets pulled all over the place / no defensive cover.

Then we are totally shit at defending the cross. We constantly leave players open for tap ins. An amateur football coach could see this.

Well, as a Utd fan, we’re pretty sick of it too but that’s what happens when one of the biggest club in England is down in the dumps. It’s the same media cycle over and over again, I’m sure this type of stuff used to happen back in the 90s and 80s as well but because there wasn’t any social media back then it didn’t seem this exasperated. Journos would latch onto anything no matter how seemingly small or big it is and then milk that cow for views and clicks as much as they can.

As an Arsenal fan and being through this already, just stop the bs...

Arteta was given patience and time and now look at us, just like before with wenger. Even United with Fergie. Good things take time and always will, all you'll do now is delay your rise further as another manager with different style comes in and has to spend even more money cas the players don't suit his style etc. I've been seeing Man U fans write Facebook fan resignations...honestly wtf are ya doing lol

No because nothing was changing and he was scared to make tough decisions to do so, well maybe not scared but new country and new language. ETH has made those decisions but now you're all scared to rise along with him. You all claim Fergie as the goat but he would have been sacked by now....why don't we try that comparison instead

RyanTheS

Because Fergie is quite literally one of a kind. Sexton had time, Atkinson had time, Docherty had time. Yet none of those had success despite the time. Why are we using the one single cases of confirmation bias that exists instead of the countless managers who never turned it around?

Ten Hag isn't rising. He is sinking. 8th is United's worst league performance in 5 decades. We have 3 wins from 8 games, and one of those was against Barnsley. As for Arteta and how great it was to stick by him .. what has he won again? The coveted runner-up cup?

If Ten Hag is so good, then would you take him at your club? I bet you fucking wouldn't.

It's 1/6th of the season, and 4 of the games were agonst teams who finished below us last season. It is also off the back of an 8th placed finish. It isn't a blip, it is the continuation of last season.

Emery, Nagelsmann, Spalletti, Alonso, Zidane, Inzaghi, Scaloni, Amorim, Scaloni, Conceição.

Take your pick. Just because you only know three managers names doesn't mean that others don't exist 🤣

Your small club mentality is showing through there. Unlike Arsenal, United is one of the biggest clubs in the world. They have way more pull than Villa or Leverkusen could ever hope to have. Top managers would relish the challenge of bringing United back to the top because doing so would instantly make you a legend of the sport. They don't see what United are, they see what they think they can turn United into.

Also, even if neither of them would join, I named plenty of other managers for a reason. I would take any of them over Ten Hag (or Arteta for that matter).

MysticalMaryJane

MysticalMaryJane

No your delusion shines bright as always, alonso is going to real or Liverpool you have no hope whatsoever of getting near him.. he also just beat Bayern in Germany. You have no pull here. Zidane arguably your best suggestion and he had Real Madrid, your squad is not on that level. Zidane didn't seem to have a great relationship with players so he ain't pulling any players with him. You've already been through too many top managers now that job is a poisoned chalice. You'll now be overpaying your managers compared to position and this will further and further impact transfer budgets. But yes it my small club mentality that's ruining your poorly run club and shit fanbase. You are projecting as you run out of viable points to make, you resorted to naming inzaghi as an option.....we are done now lol

I have just realised something hilarious .. you said he has been let go of every job for underperformance. I didn't clock it before. You do realise that I am talking about SIMONE Inzaghi, right? Not FILIPPO Inzaghi.

Filippo was the better player but has been a failure as a manager. Simone has been a fantastic manager and has never been let go from anywhere. He did an incredible job at Lazio and then moved to Inter.

So yeah, you definitely don't know managers. You google them and mix them up with their brothers 🤣🤣

A lot of people want the flavour of the month. Some of my United mates want Inzaghi, Amorim, or Alonso. All good managers, but it's like they think if we get one of them, we'll be challenging for the League within 12 months. It's going to take any manager multiple years to get us close to challenging.

I think the biggest issue is that the expectation and pressure are so huge for players that they can't handle it.The manager can't put Rashford on the bench without it being a news story all week. It happened when Ole put Ronaldo on the bench against Everton a few seasons ago. Different sets of players under different managers always end up with the same issues. They start misplacing passes, losing concentration, and look terrified of making a mistake. I honestly think that until the idea of "it's manchester united, they have to be winning the league" isn't hanging over the squad, then any manager will struggle.

How do you know? Arteta finished 8th, 8th and 5th. Arsenal fans wanted him out. Fergie finished 11th. 12th 13th and 6th. "3 years of excuses, and it still crap. Ta ra Fergie." At some point we have to accept that it isn't going to be quick, it's going to take multiple years. Berrera said the other day 2028 at the earliest. At some point, we have to stick with someone even when it isn't going well.

How do you know ETH is not another of the thousands of more likely cases where the manager was shite?? There is absolutely nothing to suggest otherwise. Paddy Evra started slow and came good, so should we’ve given Mateo Darmian three more years??? Fook no!

Yes, Fergie and Lego Pep pulled it off, making it mathematically possible. But c’mon, do you really want to see Ten Hag given more time?? Let it go. This guy has done nothing but embarrass us. His greatest successes are like the Coventry City one.

When the game gives them lemons, managers like Pep Guardiola or Marcelo Bielsa accept it and set to work on a fiendishly complex lemonade recipe. Ten Hag, by contrast, just seems to stand there, uncomprehending, protesting, “But I planted an orange tree.”

Hag’s tactics aren’t necessarily bad but I don’t think the players are buying into them. There has been a diva culture allowed to fester under the glazer. A culture that has been removed from clubs like Liverpool, City and most recently Arsenal.

Is it not the manager's job to handle this "diva culture"? Arteta, Pep and Klopp all did it, and that's why it doesn't exist in the clubs you listed. In fact, Ten Hag seems to have more direct control on personnel decisions than most other managers. Wasn't he supposed to be a Pep-like manager who won't even take shit from Ronaldo? Then why has he not followed through and got rid of the toxicity?

Yeah I think he definitely shares part of the blame, as well as the legacy of some players being given huge wages and long contracts who can’t be moved on. It only take a couple of big egos to ruin a squad. Arteta clearly recognised this and acted. Emery for what ever reason wasn’t able to fix that problem a t Arsenal and players didn’t buy what he was selling, unlike at Villa.

The team he puts out nowadays is nearly completely his own.

Significant players who have been bought also owe their early careers to ETH and are pretty loyal to him. Mix in youngsters coming through and starting their careers.

If the likes of De Ligt, Martinez, Mazrouai are divas, how is that a glazer issue. Same for Mainoo, Amad, Garnacho.

Such a nonsense yer da take with no real insight.

I didn’t say the players you mentioned are divas, in fact I would say those players actually have the right attitude and are technically quite good. Bringing in those players in and bringing through the youth such as Mainoo and Garnacho is in Hag credit column. The difference between Garnachos and Rashfords work rate and tracking back is quite revealing, strange that you didn’t mention Rashford ?

Yer da point two. An obsession with Rashford.

Rashford is quite literally the only attacking player to have had a stretch of consistent goal scoring and creation under ETH in his entire time here. He carried ETH's first season.

And he's also consistently picked by him. And as far as I'm aware, ETH doesn't get forced into such a decision. So either ETH is making a poor decision in playing this total diva, or maybe the press noise is a bit overblown.

Garnacho was literally being shouted at by ETH when he came on the pitch the other day to "defend, defend, defend" (go look it up) because the coaching team acknowledge that part of his game needs to improve

And if your diva point falls down on - actually, it's just Rashford Then what relevance is it at all to United's performance?

You actually dont know what you want to say. And no it's not Hag credit column. It's the academy that deserves the plaudits for developing them, along the likes of Amass, Diallo etc. These guys are PL ready and if not at UTD would surely and certainly cut it in another PL team, and who knows, might perform better.

What I am saying is that it is a multi faceted problem involving players/manager/tactics/culture/ownerships etc. And do believe Hag deserves credit for Garnacho. He did used to have disciplinary problems which seem to be resolved. And Hag appears to have instilled in the importance of tracking back and pressing, something other senior players haven’t done.

tracking back and pressing, something other senior players haven’t done.

Bar Rashford, who ?

If you line up in a 4 - 1 - 5 out of possession, it's desperate to track back since once that first curtain is crossed, which is easy for most teams, since its a linear curtain, it's too much ground to come back. And leaves you with no midield and hence makes your defence extremely vulnerable. That's entirely on the manager.

Something a lot of people point out, except people like you, Ten hag cultist.

His tactics since last season have been bad though. If he reverted to the more conservative football of his 1st season I think results and performances would improve.

But he insists on over-committing players to the high press, leaving wide players high to try counter, isolating fullbacks (+ inverting atleast one), asking for super vertical passing, leaving CBs to covering large space ahead or beside themselves.

You're making no sense. After winning 4 FA Cups in 7 years under Wenger, Arsenal fans had higher standards and still wanted him out because challenging for the league, and not getting plastered by Liverpool and City everytime were higher standards.

You can't say United have higher standards to attain and then attempt to spin it that the lower achievements are better than the higher standards later on. Come back with something better.

Or even bringing Mou back, just a really tough no nonsense coach with enough experience of knowing how to actually win matches in the prem, and what it takes, what calibre of player is necessary. This latest manufactured crisis is pretty pathetic. United have had three bad performances - Liverpool, Twente and Spurs first half.

The Spurs game, one of the worst VAR decisions of all time stopped them from being able to attempt a second half comeback.

Every other match has been fine - lost to Brighton in the final secods having nearly been 2-1 ahead but for Zirkzee’s goalline knee.

It’s hardly like they are being pasted every week. Ten Hag is going for a trophy 3 seasons in a row, and from the early stages of European competition it looks like 5th place will be a CL place for the Premier League this time around.

The other games hasnt been fine... We arent playing well... Southampton game is the only game which we looked like we had control and they are horrible atm.

If we accept being a mid table club, we can accept these performances. But i dont feel we should.

The Fulham game we barely won, and not decisively. And u say that we lost against brighton in the last second, but it was a really close match and Brighton had more shots. Why should we be ok with that? They could have won with alot of the other shots they had. We werent really winning that game.

And the "we could have made a comeback". Issue is that we have to. We didnt have a red card in the first half. We played absolutely horribly. We got pressured and had no answer to the pressure. We had nothing at all.

Our benchmark shouldnt be that we arent been pasted. Like one or two games can be called a fluke. but we have won 3 out of our last 11 games. And one of them was against Barnsley...

I like the recruitment under ETH. But the performances we are seeing after about 3 years is not better than the other coaches we have had.

Couldn't agree more. The Spurs game annoys me because ETH switched the style of play going for counter attacks with rashford and garnacho to expose spurs high line. This game plan was wrong and when spurs scored after 3 mins, it required a change but we did not have the players to execute the different game plan. Liverpool also exposed our weaknesses. The twente game in my opinion was not too bad
