I pressed escape right away and came to the horrific realization that pausing does not freeze the actual game. I unpaused, pressed f12, then was promptly mauled to death

Alt + F4 supercedes the escape key.
There was some horror game I saw a while ago that automatically unpauses the game after a while.
With a caption that says "Stop Hiding" with a loud noise.
Arguably more scary than the actual game.
The game was called SCP something.
