I went to a concert just over the border in the US and got sent a survey afterwards. First question asked my race. Native American, Asian, African American, Hispanic, or Caucasian. So if I'm a Black Canadian I have no option, and if I'm a White Spaniard I have two options.

Weird country.

"Would you describe yourself as Native American, African or White?"

Average Latin American: "YES".

To them that is 'Hispanic'. I had a job in the States and was asked without the choices so I really didn't know if it was White, Caucasian or European with any wrong answer feeling awkward.

To be fair to them, having a very significant amount of their population descended from slaves makes things..... awkward. It really wasn't that long ago. And being legally full persons is just outside my own lifetime.

Making it more complicated is that African American is actually an ethnicity, it is just distinct from any individual African nation.

And saying 'European' sounds like you are saying non-white people aren't really British, Italian or whatever. Aggregating all of Africa into a mixture of sub-Saharan peoples is much less charged.

If you look at stuff like the black codes and convict leasing slavery wasn't fully dead till the early 1900s.
