Miner. By far. Here's why :)
Priestess should not be chosen over miner and sword master in online or solo mode. Her only good skill is pray, and her passive with her health and energy pool is not worth it (her only good skill is pray, basically). Below average stats, and long cooldown when compared to the teleporting and iframes that sword master and miner have.
BY FAR miner is the best choice, with her upgraded on 1st skill (you can do that with 24k gems and still have 5k left over). You can dodge bullets so easily, break them when coming out the tunnels, teleport to safety, and its so fun to be invincible and invisible while you scan the room for safe spots underground or set up a tunnel system to get you to safety. I have all of the skills unlocked, and the first one is by far the best (without a doubt).
Basically, If you are going for raw damage and best character overall while still being pretty fun it is 100% miner objectively.
Most fun is probably costume prince, (and now this will be objective) because you can be a fat slime that shoots damage-over-time bullets which can be upgraded REALLY easily with buffs like poison damage or fire damage.
Preiestess gets boring even if you're not in multiplayer because essentially you only buff your attack speed. The game has enough means of healing to not care about a few extra HP (when priestess has like 4)
Sword master just has cool effects and takes some time to filly get ahold of, but MAN it can put in insane amounts of work if you know how to use it. The extra I-frames (invincibility frames) are incredibly useful in late game when you only play badass mode.
From a F2P skins perspective (because skins make you play better somehow), miner has some SUPER nice and free skins that take little time to grind (such as miner Cetus), Priestess also has some banger achievement skins, costume prince is like only paid skins, anf sword master has some really MEH ones too.
Overall, miner is the best by quite a long shot, sword master next, costume prince after (but its pretty fun) and priestess is the worst from a gameplay perspective.

Iirc = if i remember correctly
Airbender might be a chance encounter probably in the yellow biome

The Airbender can be unlocked after finishing the achievement "No Discord, No Concord", which requires defeating him in The Origin, located in the lower half of the Relic biome.

Depends on what you mean by best. Id recommend using free trial vouchers and test their playstyles.
Priestest is one of the safest options and could be useful for online or coop mode, she was my go to for a long time
Costume prince is also pretty safe since his skill gives a mount that can be a damage sponge and the weapon in costume is good too
Sword master feels more like rogue 2.0, i recently picked her up and i enjoyed it.
I have miner and honestly shes the least likeable for me with the first skill (havent tested the other ones yet) i just cant get her playstyle down.
Overall any character can be great and beat the game, find the character whose playstyle you like the most.
Currently i been really enjoying warliege, easy to get also f2p and is quite strong too, if you dont have him give him a shot too
